Chapter 4: The Woman Who Knew My Name
I stared at the message until the letters blurred.
*Your sister wants to meet you.*
My thumb hovered over the screen.
A dozen questions fought inside my head.
Who sent it?
How did they get my number?
How did they know I had just learned the truth?
And the question that scared me most—
What if Lily was alive?
“Daniel?””
My mother’s voice pulled me back.
I looked up.
The ballroom was still frozen.
Hundreds of eyes watched my family collapse in real time.
The wedding cake sat untouched behind us. The candles Claire had chosen were still burning. The flowers that had taken months to arrange now felt like decorations at a crime scene.
I turned to Claire.
“You knew she was alive.””
Claire looked down.
“I suspected.””
“You suspected?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I spent years searching for answers.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You spent years hiding things from me.””
“That’s not fair.””
I laughed quietly.
“Fair?””
My voice cracked.
“My mother showed up bleeding at my wedding because of you.””
Claire flinched.
“I never wanted her hurt.””
My father stepped forward.
“Then why did you go to her house?””
Claire looked at him.
“Because she had the truth.””
Dad’s expression hardened.
“You threatened her.””
“I needed her to tell me where Lily was.””
My mother looked confused.
“She didn’t know.””
Claire’s face changed.
For a moment, the anger disappeared.
Only pain remained.
“She knew more than she admitted.””
Nobody spoke.
I looked at my mother.
“Mom?””
She looked away.
That was enough.
“You did know something.””
She closed her eyes.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“I need the truth.””
My mother’s shoulders fell.
“I knew Lily survived.””
My chest tightened.
“But you told me she was gone.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
She looked at my father.
Then at the floor.
“From remembering.””
The words made no sense.
I turned to Dad.
“What does that mean?””
He walked toward me slowly.
“Daniel, you were a child.””
“I know.””
“You don’t understand what happened that night.””
“Then explain it.””
His jaw tightened.
“We were driving home from your grandmother’s house. Lily was in the back seat with you.””
I looked down at the photograph.
My hand was shaking.
“She was my sister.””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
Dad swallowed.
“Another car hit us.””
The room went silent.
“Lily was injured badly.””
My mother covered her mouth.
“She was unconscious.””
Dad continued.
“You kept calling her name.””
A memory flashed.
A little girl’s hand.
Cold fingers.
My voice screaming.
“Wake up.””
I closed my eyes.
“I remember.””
Dad looked at me.
“What?””
“I remember someone leaving.””
His face changed.
My mother grabbed my arm.
“Daniel, what did you see?””
I tried to force the memory back.
The rain.
The broken glass.
A man standing beside the car.
A voice.
A warning.
I opened my eyes.
“There was someone else.””
Claire whispered, “Who?””
“I don’t know.””
Dad looked terrified.
Not confused.
Terrified.
My phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time, there was a picture attached.
I opened it.
A woman stood outside a small coffee shop.
She had dark curly hair.
A scar near her eyebrow.
And the same eyes as mine.
Under the photo was a message.
*I waited twenty years to meet you. Please come alone.*
My mother grabbed my hand.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“She’s my sister.””
“She’s also the reason someone came after you tonight.””
I turned.
“What?””
Mom’s face went pale.
Before she could answer, Claire spoke.
“She knows.””
Everyone looked at her.
Claire wiped her tears.
“She knows who tried to stop her from coming here.””
My heart pounded.
“How?””
Claire looked toward the doors.
“Because Lily called me before the wedding.””
The room went completely silent.
“You spoke to her?””
Claire nodded.
“She wanted to warn me.””
“Warn you about what?””
Claire’s voice dropped.
“She said if I married you, I would become exactly like the person who destroyed her life.””
I stared at her.
“What person?””
Claire looked at my father.
Then at my mother.
May you like
Then back at me.
“She said the person responsible is still in this room.””
