Chapter 8: The Secret Between Sisters
Lily didn’t hug me.
She didn’t cry.
She didn’t say she had missed me.
She just stared at me.
Like she was trying to find the little boy she remembered inside the man standing in front of her.
The hotel entrance was almost empty.
The music from the ballroom sounded distant.
A celebration happening in another universe.
“Lily?””
Her jaw tightened when I said her name.
“You remember.””
I shook my head.
“Not enough.””
She looked down.
“That’s what they wanted.””
“Who?””
She laughed bitterly.
“My family.””
I felt a familiar anger rise.
“Your family?””
She looked at me.
“Yes.””
“My mother loves you.””
“She loved the version of me that didn’t ask questions.””
“That’s not true.””
“Isn’t it?””
Her words hit harder than I expected.
I studied her face.
The scar above her eyebrow.
The shape of her eyes.
The way she tilted her head when she was angry.
I saw pieces of the little girl from the photograph.
“I’m sorry.””
She looked surprised.
“For what?””
“For not remembering you.””
Her expression softened for a second.
Then it disappeared.
“You were eleven.””
“I still should have.””
“You were a child.””
“Then why do you hate me?””
She looked away.
“I don’t hate you.””
“Your message sounded like you did.””
She took a deep breath.
“I spent fifteen years believing everyone forgot me.””
I stepped closer.
“I didn’t.””
“You did.””
The honesty hurt.
But I knew she wasn’t trying to hurt me.
She was telling me what her life felt like.
“My parents told me you moved on.””
“I thought you were gone.””
“And my father?””
I froze.
“Your father?””
She looked toward the hotel doors.
“Robert Hale.””
“What about him?””
“He knew where I was.””
My heart stopped.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“My father searched for you.””
“He found me.””
The world shifted.
“Then why didn’t he bring you home?””
Lily’s eyes filled.
“Because he was afraid of what I would remember.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What did you remember?””
She reached into her coat.
She pulled out a small notebook.
Old.
Damaged.
She handed it to me.
“What is this?””
“My diary.””
I opened it carefully.
The first pages were written in childish handwriting.
The last page was different.
Written years later.
Older handwriting.
More painful.
I read the first line.
*I finally remember the night Daniel saw the truth.*
I looked up.
“What truth?””
Lily watched me.
“The truth about the accident.””
I closed the notebook.
“Tell me.””
She hesitated.
“You were there.””
“I know.””
“No.””
Her voice became quiet.
“You were not just there.””
My heartbeat increased.
“What are you saying?””
She looked toward the hotel.
“Your father lied.””
I felt sick.
“My father?””
“He told you I disappeared because of an accident.””
“That’s what happened.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“It wasn’t an accident.””
The night suddenly felt colder.
“Then what was it?””
She looked at me.
“It was an attack.””
“By who?””
She didn’t answer immediately.
Then she said:
“Someone who wanted your father destroyed.””
I stared at her.
“Who?””
Lily looked toward the ballroom.
Toward the people inside.
Then she whispered:
“Your mother.””
I stepped back.
“No.””
“She was there.””
“You’re wrong.””
“She was holding the knife.””
My stomach dropped.
A thousand thoughts collided.
My mother.
The woman who raised me.
The woman who came to my wedding bleeding.
The woman who wrote the letter.
“That’s impossible.””
Lily’s eyes filled with tears.
“I wanted it to be impossible too.””
She opened the notebook to another page.
There was a drawing.
A child’s drawing.
A house.
Three people.
And one person standing outside.
The person had a knife.
Underneath it were five words.
*Mom told me to run.*
I looked at Lily.
“Why would she do that?””
“Because she knew something.””
“What?””
Lily stepped closer.
“Something about your father.””
A voice behind me interrupted us.
“Daniel.””
I turned.
My father stood at the entrance.
His face was pale.
He had heard enough.
Lily looked at him.
“You never thought I would come back.””
Dad whispered:
“I hoped you would.””
She laughed.
“You hoped?””
He stepped forward.
“I protected you.””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“You protected yourself.””
Then she pulled another envelope from her coat.
She handed it to me.
“This is why Claire came into your life.””
I stared at the envelope.
“What does Claire have to do with this?””
Lily looked at me sadly.
“Everything.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a marriage certificate.
Not mine.
Someone else’s.
My father’s name was on it.
May you like
And the woman he married before my mother was…
Claire’s mother.
