Chapter 2: The Second Letter

The man at the door was someone I had never seen before.

He was in his fifties, wearing a soaked navy jacket and carrying a leather folder under one arm.

My father went completely still.

“Martin.””

The man nodded once.

Claire took a step backward.

That was when I understood this had nothing to do with a family argument.

There was history here.

A lot of it.

I stepped between Claire and my mother.

“Who is he?””

Dad didn’t answer.

Martin walked into the ballroom.

“I was hoping we could handle this privately.””

My mother shook her head.

“Not anymore.””

Martin looked at her injured hand.

His expression changed.

“I’m sorry.””

“What happened?”” I asked.

He glanced at Claire.

“She knows.””

Claire snapped, “You’re lying.””

Martin unzipped the leather folder.

“I have security footage.””

Claire’s face went white.

My wedding guests began whispering.

I could hear forks touching plates. Chairs moving. Someone quietly crying.

Everything felt unreal.

I looked at Claire.

“You knew this man?””

“No.””

Martin answered for her.

“She knows exactly who I am.””

Claire glared at him.

“Stop.””

Martin ignored her.

“I manage the property where your parents’ house is located.””

Dad’s jaw tightened.

“You said the camera system was broken.””

“It was,” Martin said.

“After someone destroyed the main recorder.””

My chest tightened.

“Someone?””

Martin looked directly at Claire.

“Your wife came onto the property Tuesday afternoon.””

Claire’s voice rose.

“That proves nothing.””

My mother spoke softly.

“She came to threaten me.””

Claire turned on her.

“You should be grateful I gave you a warning.””

The room went silent again.

I stared at Claire.

“A warning?””

She realized what she had said.

Her mouth closed.

I felt something inside me crack.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Doubt.

All those little moments I had dismissed suddenly lined up in my head.

Claire insisting my mother had “always been difficult.””

Claire telling me Mom was jealous of our marriage.

Claire saying Mom had become controlling.

Claire suggesting we stop having Sunday dinners because “boundaries were important.””

And every time I had defended Claire.

Every time I had told my mother to give her a chance.

Mom looked at me.

“I tried.””

Her voice broke.

“I tried so many times to tell you.””

I swallowed.

“Why didn’t you tell me everything?””

She stared at the floor.

“Because she showed me something.””

“What?””

Claire whispered, “Mom.””

My mother looked up.

“She showed me photographs of Daniel leaving the office with another woman.””

I froze.

Claire had told me about that woman months ago.

She had claimed my mother found the pictures and sent them to her to make her doubt me.

I looked at Claire.

“Those pictures came from you.””

She said nothing.

Martin opened his folder.

“There’s more.””

He placed printed photographs on the nearest table.

The first showed Claire standing outside my parents’ home.

The second showed her entering through the side gate.

The third showed her carrying something.

A black folder.

Dad stared at it.

“That’s mine.””

I looked at him.

“What’s inside?””

He hesitated.

Martin answered.

“Property documents. Bank records. And an old legal file.””

Claire stepped forward.

“Daniel, your father is hiding something from you.””

Dad looked at her.

“Yes.””

My heart pounded.

He reached inside his jacket again.

This time he pulled out a small brass key.

“I found this after your mother was attacked.””

I stared at it.

“What does it open?””

Dad looked at Martin.

Martin nodded.

“The storage room beneath your parents’ house.””

Claire suddenly screamed.

“No!””

Every head turned toward her.

She covered her mouth.

Too late.

I walked closer.

“What’s in there, Claire?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel, I can explain.””

“Then explain.””

She looked at my mother.

Then at my father.

Finally, she looked at me.

“There are things about your family you were never supposed to know.””

Dad’s voice was low.

“Tell him.””

Claire shook her head.

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

“Because if I tell him,” she whispered, “he’ll know why I married him.””

My blood went cold.

She reached into her bouquet.

Her fingers closed around something hidden beneath the flowers.

Then she pulled out a photograph.

And I saw my own face.

Taken fifteen years earlier.

Standing beside a little girl I had never seen before.
