Chapter 8: The Brother My Husband Was Hiding

I thought I'd misheard him.

"What did you just say?""

Daniel was breathing heavily.

"Michael wanted to marry you before he died.""

I gripped the edge of Robert's desk.

"That's impossible. I met Michael after you and I were already dating.""

"No. You met him at the family Christmas party. We were already married by then.""

"Exactly.""

Daniel went silent.

I remembered that Christmas.

Michael had barely spoken to me. He'd spent most of the evening sitting near the fireplace, occasionally watching Daniel and me.

I'd assumed he was simply reserved.

Now Daniel was telling me that his brother had wanted to marry me.

"Explain yourself.""

Daniel sighed.

"Before you and I got together, Michael met you at a charity fundraiser.""

I remembered the event.

I'd attended with a coworker. A man had helped me retrieve my handbag after someone accidentally knocked it off a chair.

I hadn't known his name.

Daniel continued.

"He recognized you when I introduced you to the family. He told Mom he'd met you before and that he liked you.""

"That doesn't mean he wanted to marry me.""

"He asked Mom to approach your family.""

I laughed in disbelief.

"And what did your mother do?""

"She told him you were interested in me.""

I stared at Robert.

Daniel continued.

"Michael was already dealing with health problems. Mom was terrified he'd never have a family. He wanted children. She wanted to make sure he had someone to carry on the family name.""

I struggled to understand.

"Then why did you marry me?""

"Because I loved you.""

"Did you?""

He didn't answer.

I continued.

"Did you marry me because you wanted me, or because your mother wanted to keep Michael's wishes alive?""

Daniel's voice cracked.

"Sarah, I did love you.""

"Then why did you allow me to believe our child was dead?""

He remained silent.

I ended the call.

Robert watched me carefully.

"Sarah, there's something else in the agreement.""

He turned the document toward me.

A paragraph had been highlighted.

It stated that Patricia would receive guardianship only if the biological mother voluntarily relinquished parental rights.

I read it twice.

"But I never signed this.""

"That's why the authenticity of the signatures matters.""

"Then how did Patricia get Oliver?""

Robert explained that the hospital had accepted an emergency authorization submitted under my name. A separate legal order had temporarily transferred guardianship while I was supposedly recovering from complications.

I felt dizzy.

"Can we challenge it?""

"Yes. But we need to establish exactly what happened and protect Oliver's interests.""

He advised me not to confront Patricia again without legal representation.

I agreed.

For the first time, I understood that this wasn't simply a marriage ending.

It was a legal fight over a little boy who had been raised to believe his mother couldn't keep him.

That evening, I received a call from an unfamiliar number.

"Is this Sarah Mitchell?""

"Yes.""

"My name is Vanessa Carter. We need to talk.""

I froze.

The woman from the financial records.

The woman who had carried Oliver.

"How did you get my number?""

"Daniel gave it to me.""

I glanced at Robert.

"What do you want?""

"To tell you the truth before Patricia destroys the last evidence.""

We arranged to meet at a small coffee shop the following morning.

Vanessa arrived wearing a gray coat and carrying a large envelope.

She looked exhausted.

"Thank you for coming," she said.

I didn't offer a greeting.

"Tell me what happened.""

Vanessa placed the envelope on the table.

"I was hired to carry a child for Patricia.""

I stared at her.

"Did you know the child was mine?""

She shook her head.

"Not initially. Patricia told me the biological mother had died.""

My stomach tightened.

"She told you I was dead?""

"She said the woman had died during a medical emergency.""

I felt sick.

Vanessa opened the envelope.

Inside were payment receipts, hospital correspondence, and several photographs.

"Patricia paid me to carry Oliver. She told me the biological father was her deceased son, Michael. Daniel was supposed to act as the child's father.""

I looked at the photographs.

One showed Vanessa holding a newborn Oliver.

Another showed Patricia standing beside her hospital bed.

"Why did you agree?""

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

"I had debts. I needed money. Patricia promised everything would be handled legally.""

"And when did you discover the truth?""

"About eighteen months later.""

She pulled out a folded letter.

"Daniel came to my apartment. He told me you were still alive and that you'd been told the baby had died.""

I stared at her.

"You knew?""

Vanessa nodded.

"I was horrified. I told Daniel I wanted to contact you.""

"What did he say?""

"He threatened to report me for violating the agreement and make sure I lost custody of my own daughter.""

I leaned forward.

"Your daughter?""

Vanessa's eyes filled.

"Patricia knew I had a little girl. She used my financial problems against me. She said she'd make sure I never saw my daughter again if I told you.""

I felt anger rising.

"Why are you telling me now?""

Vanessa reached into her handbag and removed another photograph.

It showed Patricia standing with Daniel and a little girl.

I recognized the child.

The girl was wearing a pink dress and holding a birthday balloon.

Vanessa whispered, "That's my daughter, Lily.""

I looked at her.

"Why is Patricia with your daughter?""

Vanessa began crying.

"Because Patricia didn't just want Oliver. She wanted control over both of us.""

My phone vibrated.

A message from Robert appeared.

Sarah, urgent. I found a second guardianship application filed by Patricia yesterday.

I opened the attachment.

It requested permanent custody of Oliver.

But the application included something even more disturbing.

A statement claiming that I had abandoned my child voluntarily.

I looked up at Vanessa.

"Did you sign a statement saying I gave him up?""

She nodded miserably.

"Patricia paid me to sign it.""

"Why?""

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

"Because she told me you were dangerous.""

I stared at her.

May you like

Then she whispered the words that changed the entire situation.

"Sarah, Patricia is trying to move Oliver out of Tennessee tonight.""
