Chapter 13: The Recording That Exposed My Husband
"Mommy, Grandma told Daddy that if he didn't take me away, she would tell everyone what he did to Uncle Michael.""
Oliver's little voice followed me all the way home.
I couldn't stop thinking about it.
What had Daniel done?
Had he helped Patricia conceal Michael's death? Had he participated in the falsification of the medical records? Or was there something much worse?
That evening, Rachel called.
"Sarah, we located Richard Coleman.""
"Where?""
"He's at a private residence outside Franklin. Police are questioning him.""
"Did they find the original documents?""
"Not yet. But there's something else. Richard contacted the investigators voluntarily.""
I sat down.
"Why would he suddenly cooperate?""
"Because he claims Daniel threatened him.""
I stared at the wall.
"Daniel?""
"Yes. Apparently, Richard has recordings of conversations between Daniel and Patricia.""
"Can we hear them?""
"Not yet. They're being reviewed as part of the investigation.""
The following morning, Rachel called again.
"Sarah, I need you at the district attorney's office.""
When I arrived, Detective Harris was waiting with two other investigators.
He placed a small recording device on the table.
"Mrs. Mitchell, we recovered this from Richard Coleman's office.""
I recognized Daniel's voice immediately.
The recording began.
*Patricia:* "Michael is becoming a problem. He's talking about going to the police.""
*Daniel:* "Then tell him to stop.""
*Patricia:* "He won't listen to me. He says he wants Sarah to know everything.""
There was a pause.
Then Daniel spoke.
*Daniel:* "If Michael tells her, the entire arrangement collapses.""
*Patricia:* "You need to handle your brother.""
My fingers tightened around the chair.
The recording continued.
*Daniel:* "I can't keep doing this.""
*Patricia:* "You owe me. I paid your debts. I gave you everything you have.""
*Daniel:* "And what happens if he goes to the police?""
Patricia answered without hesitation.
*Patricia:* "Then make sure he doesn't get the chance.""
The recording ended.
I covered my mouth.
"Are you telling me Daniel arranged Michael's accident?""
Detective Harris spoke carefully.
"We're not drawing that conclusion yet. But the conversation is significant. We're investigating whether Daniel knew about or participated in the circumstances surrounding Michael's death.""
Rachel asked another question.
"Is there additional evidence?""
The detective nodded.
"Richard provided a second recording.""
He pressed play.
This time, the conversation was between Daniel and Richard.
*Daniel:* "The original consent document needs to disappear.""
*Richard:* "You understand that's illegal?""
*Daniel:* "I understand that my mother will destroy both of us if this comes out.""
*Richard:* "Sarah has a right to know about the child.""
*Daniel:* "Sarah has a right to believe whatever we tell her.""
I felt physically sick.
Then came the sentence that destroyed whatever remained of my marriage.
*Daniel:* "Once Oliver's trust is released, Mom and I will divide the money. Sarah won't know anything until it's too late.""
I looked at Rachel.
She was watching me carefully.
"Sarah, are you okay?""
I shook my head.
"No.""
For eight years, I'd defended Daniel.
I'd defended him when his family criticized me. I'd defended him when he refused to support me. I'd defended him when my mother warned me that Patricia's influence over him was unhealthy.
I'd even defended him after he watched his mother throw soup on me.
And all that time, he had been planning to steal my child's future.
Detective Harris closed the folder.
"We're seeking additional warrants. We may need you to provide a formal statement.""
"I'll tell you everything.""
That afternoon, I received a message from Daniel.
Please meet me alone. I need to tell you what really happened to Michael.
Rachel immediately advised against meeting him privately.
I agreed.
We arranged for the meeting to take place in a conference room at her office, with a recording system and witnesses.
Daniel arrived twenty minutes late.
He looked exhausted.
His expensive watch was gone. His shirt was wrinkled, and his eyes were bloodshot.
He sat across from me.
"Sarah.""
I didn't answer.
He looked at Rachel.
"Can we have five minutes?""
"No," I said.
"You can speak in front of my lawyer.""
Daniel swallowed.
"Fine.""
He took a folded photograph from his pocket.
It showed Michael standing outside a house.
"I didn't kill my brother.""
I stared at him.
"I didn't ask you that.""
Daniel's eyes filled.
"Mom took his car keys the night he died. Michael was planning to leave town and report everything.""
"What happened next?""
"Mom called me. She told me Michael had taken her car and was driving away.""
"Was that true?""
Daniel shook his head.
"She asked me to follow him.""
My stomach tightened.
"Did you?""
"Yes.""
He looked down.
"I followed Michael to the highway. We argued. He told me he knew about the money and the fertility arrangement. He said he was going to tell you everything.""
"And?""
Daniel wiped his face.
"I tried to stop him. He got into his car and drove away. A few minutes later, I saw the accident.""
I stared at him.
"Did you call emergency services?""
He began crying.
"No.""
"Why?""
"Mom told me to wait. She said the police would find him.""
I stood.
"You left your brother dying on the side of the road?""
Daniel buried his face in his hands.
"I was twenty-seven. I was scared.""
"You were old enough to know better.""
Rachel interrupted.
"Mr. Mitchell, did your mother cause the accident?""
Daniel looked up.
"I don't know.""
"Did she interfere with the vehicle?""
He shook his head.
"She never told me.""
I leaned forward.
"Then why did she threaten you with what happened to Michael?""
Daniel reached into his pocket and removed a small memory card.
"Because I recorded her afterward.""
Rachel immediately took it.
"What's on this?""
Daniel looked directly at me.
"Mom admitting she tampered with Michael's brakes before he left.""
The room went silent.
I stared at the man I'd once called my husband.
He had known.
He had known his mother might have caused his brother's death, and he'd spent six years protecting her.
Daniel began sobbing.
"Sarah, I know I deserve to lose everything. But please don't let Oliver hate me.""
I stood.
"That's not my decision to make.""
Then I walked out.
Behind me, Rachel asked Daniel one final question.
"Mr. Mitchell, is there anything else you haven't told us?""
He whispered something.
And the detective, who had just entered the room, immediately stopped walking.
Because Daniel had finally admitted why Patricia had been so desperate to keep Oliver.
*Michael had changed his will three days before he died.*

And the original beneficiary wasn't Patricia.
It was me.
