Chapter 12: The Lawyer Who Knew Everything

I drove straight to Robert's office.

Rachel insisted on accompanying me, and she brought the original letter and the USB drive.

When we arrived, Robert was waiting beside his desk.

He looked older than I remembered.

His usual confidence was gone.

I didn't sit down.

"Start talking.""

Robert folded his hands.

"Six years ago, Michael asked me to review several financial documents connected to Patricia's estate. He suspected money was being moved without authorization.""

"And you agreed?""

"Yes.""

"Then you discovered Daniel was involved.""

Robert nodded.

"He was receiving payments from Patricia. At first, I believed they were legitimate family transactions.""

"How much?""

"Over time, approximately $148,000.""

I stared at him.

"That's the money I found.""

"Correct.""

I walked closer.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Robert looked genuinely ashamed.

"Because Michael asked me to wait until he had enough evidence. Then he died.""

"And you continued waiting?""

He lowered his eyes.

"Patricia threatened to accuse me of financial misconduct. I had access to several confidential accounts, and she knew how to make the situation look complicated.""

Rachel interrupted.

"Who prepared the forged authorization?""

Robert opened a drawer and removed a folder.

"An attorney named Richard Coleman.""

I recognized the name.

Richard had handled Daniel's business contracts and several of our family documents.

He'd attended our wedding.

He'd even advised me once when I was considering expanding my company.

I felt sick.

"You're telling me our family lawyer forged my signature?""

Robert nodded.

"He prepared the authorization that transferred control of the medical records.""

Rachel examined the document.

"This signature is suspicious. We'll need a forensic examination.""

Robert handed her another page.

"This is the original payment instruction.""

Rachel read it carefully.

Then her expression changed.

"Who authorized this transfer?""

Robert pointed to the bottom.

Daniel Mitchell.

But something else was written beneath his signature.

Payment for continued silence concerning Michael Mitchell's death.

I stared at it.

"Daniel paid someone to stay quiet?""

Robert nodded.

"Richard received money from Patricia and Daniel. In exchange, he managed the legal paperwork and discouraged anyone from investigating the original medical arrangement.""

Rachel photographed the document.

"This is important evidence.""

I turned toward Robert.

"Did Michael know Daniel was involved?""

"He suspected it.""

"Then why did he keep trusting him?""

Robert looked toward the window.

"Because Michael believed Daniel could still do the right thing.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Michael was wrong.""

Robert didn't disagree.

He opened another file.

"There's one more document. It's a letter Richard sent Patricia shortly after Oliver was born.""

Rachel read it aloud.

The guardianship arrangement will remain enforceable as long as Sarah does not challenge the original consent. If she discovers the child survived, we must establish that she voluntarily relinquished her rights.

My hands tightened.

The letter continued.

Daniel must maintain the marriage until the inheritance dispute is resolved.

I looked up.

"Until the inheritance dispute?""

Robert nodded.

"Your mother's family trust was involved.""

I frowned.

"My mother left me her inheritance years before Oliver was born.""

"Yes. But the trust contained a condition. If you had a biological child, certain assets would pass into a separate protected fund for that child.""

I felt my stomach turn.

"How much?""

Robert gave me a number.

Nearly $3.2 million.

I sank into the chair.

Suddenly, everything made sense.

Patricia hadn't simply wanted a grandchild.

She had wanted control of the inheritance.

Oliver was connected to Michael's family line, and because of the way my mother's trust was structured, his existence created financial rights Patricia wanted to control.

Daniel had married me.

Patricia had manipulated the pregnancy.

Richard had prepared the documents.

And my money had financed the entire operation.

Rachel closed the folder.

"Sarah, we need to move quickly. I'll file the necessary motions to challenge the guardianship and protect the trust assets.""

I nodded.

"Do it.""

Robert looked uncomfortable.

"There's another reason Patricia may have accelerated the airport trip.""

"What?""

He pulled out a final document.

It was a property transfer agreement.

Patricia had attempted to transfer Oliver's beneficial interest in the trust to a private company.

The company was registered under a name I recognized.

Mitchell Family Holdings.

Daniel's company.

I looked at Robert.

"Can she legally do that?""

"No. Not without the required authorization. But the documents show she intended to try.""

Rachel stood.

"This is now more than a custody dispute. We need to preserve every record.""

I nodded.

Then my phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered on speaker.

"Sarah, we need to meet.""

I looked at Rachel.

"Why?""

"Mom has been arrested.""

My stomach tightened.

"On what grounds?""

"Forgery and financial misconduct. They're questioning her about Michael.""

I remained silent.

Daniel continued.

"Richard is missing.""

Rachel immediately looked up.

"Where is he?""

"I don't know. He called Mom this morning and said he was leaving town.""

I asked, "Why are you calling me?""

Daniel took a shaky breath.

"Because he sent me something before he disappeared.""

"What?""

"A copy of Michael's final will.""

I stared at Rachel.

"Michael had a will?""

"Yes. Mom told everyone he'd left everything to her. But that's not what the document says.""

My heart began pounding.

"Who inherited his estate?""

Daniel whispered.

"Oliver.""

I closed my eyes.

Then Daniel added something that made the entire room go still.

"And there's a condition. If Oliver's biological mother is still alive, she becomes the sole trustee until he turns twenty-one.""

I looked at Rachel.

She slowly nodded.

Daniel continued.

"Sarah, Mom didn't just hide Oliver because she wanted to raise him.""

"Then why?""

"Because if you discovered he was alive, you'd legally control Michael's entire estate.""

I gripped the phone.

"How much money are we talking about?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Approximately twelve million dollars.""

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then I asked the question that had been haunting me since the restaurant.

"Daniel, did you know about the inheritance when you married me?""

He whispered, "Yes.""

"And did you know Patricia was planning to take my baby?""

Another silence.

Then he said:

"I knew she wanted Oliver. But I didn't know she planned to make sure you never found him.""

Rachel reached over and ended the call.

She looked at me.

"Sarah, we need to prepare for a hearing. And we need to find Richard Coleman before he destroys the original records.""

I glanced at Oliver, who was sitting in the waiting area drawing a picture of our family.

He had drawn three people.

Himself.

Me.

And a tall man holding a briefcase.

I crouched beside him.

"Who's that, sweetheart?""

Oliver pointed at the drawing.

"That's Daddy.""

I smiled sadly.

"Why did you draw him holding a briefcase?""

Oliver looked up innocently.

"Because Daddy said he was taking me away to live with Grandma forever.""

My heart broke.

I hugged him.

Then he whispered something that made me pull back.

"Mommy, Grandma told Daddy that if he didn't take me away, she would tell everyone what he did to Uncle Michael.""

I stared at him.

"What did Daddy do?""

Oliver lowered his voice.

"He said he was sorry Uncle Michael couldn't come home.""

And suddenly, I realized the biggest secret might still be buried.

May you like

Because Daniel hadn't simply known about Michael's death.

He might have been involved in what happened that night.
