Chapter 3: The Woman Behind the $148,000
I didn't go home that night.
I sat in my car outside the restaurant, still wearing the blouse stained with soup, staring at the name Vanessa Carter.
My phone rang.
Robert.
I answered immediately.
"Tell me everything.""
He hesitated.
"Sarah, are you somewhere private?""
"I'm alone.""
"Good. I don't want you discussing this with Daniel until you've seen the documents.""
My stomach tightened.
"What documents?""
"The bank statements, the transfer authorizations, and the records connected to the hospital payment.""
I gripped the steering wheel.
"Robert, just tell me. What did Daniel do?""
There was a long silence.
Then he said, "He's been transferring money from your personal business account into an account controlled by his mother. Patricia then moved portions of that money to Vanessa Carter.""
"How much?""
"Approximately $148,000 over seventeen months.""
I closed my eyes.
"Why would he do that?""
"I don't know yet. But the hospital payment is particularly concerning.""
"What hospital?""
"St. Catherine's Women's Medical Center.""
I recognized the name.
It was the clinic Daniel and I had visited four years earlier when we were trying to have a baby.
I'd undergone months of examinations, blood tests, and painful procedures.
Daniel had attended two appointments before suddenly becoming too busy with work.
Eventually, he told me the doctors believed I had a serious fertility problem.
I remembered crying in the bathroom that night.
Daniel had held me and promised we would find another way to become parents.
Now Robert was telling me there had been a hospital payment from my account.
"Send me everything," I whispered.
"I already have. Sarah, there's one more thing.""
"What?""
"The payments to Vanessa weren't ordinary transfers. Some were labeled as childcare expenses.""
My breath caught.
"Childcare?""
"Yes.""
I looked down at the message again.
Final payment before Sarah discovers whose child it is.
"Robert, I need to know who Vanessa is.""
"I found an address associated with her account. I'll send it.""
Before ending the call, he added something that made my blood run cold.
"Sarah, I also found a signed authorization with your name on it.""
"What authorization?""
"A document allowing Daniel to access certain business funds on your behalf.""
"I never signed anything like that.""
"I suspected you might say that.""
My phone buzzed.
A new email appeared.
Robert had attached a scanned document.
I opened it.
At the bottom was a signature that looked remarkably like mine.
Except it wasn't mine.
Someone had copied it.
I stared at the screen until the letters blurred.
Then I heard a knock against my driver's window.
I nearly screamed.
Daniel stood outside.
His jacket was unbuttoned, and his hair was disheveled. Patricia's birthday celebration was apparently continuing without him.
I lowered the window just enough to hear him.
"Sarah, open the door.""
"No.""
"We need to talk.""
"We've talked for eight years, Daniel. You never listened.""
He rubbed his forehead.
"Mom is upset. You embarrassed her in front of everybody.""
I laughed bitterly.
"Your mother threw hot soup on me.""
"She was angry.""
"That explains it?""
He looked toward the restaurant entrance.
"Can we please not do this here?""
I held up my phone.
"Who is Vanessa Carter?""
His expression changed so quickly that I almost missed it.
But I didn't.
His shoulders stiffened.
"What?""
"Vanessa Carter. Who is she?""
He looked away.
"Where did you get that name?""
"From the money you've been sending her.""
He took a step backward.
"Sarah, I can explain.""
"Then explain.""
He opened his mouth.
Closed it.
Then he said the one thing that made me certain I needed to leave.
"You're misunderstanding the situation.""
"That's interesting. Because I'm looking at seventeen months of payments totaling $148,000.""
He grabbed the edge of my car window.
"Listen to me. You don't understand what Mom and I were trying to do.""
"Mom and you?""
He swallowed.
I leaned closer.
"What does Vanessa have to do with our marriage?""
Daniel looked genuinely frightened.
"She's nobody.""
"Then why did you write that she was receiving the final payment before I discovered whose child it was?""
His face lost all color.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then he stepped away from the car.
"Sarah, please. Not here.""
I started the engine.
"Where, Daniel? At home? Where you've apparently been hiding $148,000?""
He reached for the door handle.
"Don't leave.""
I locked the doors.
"Goodbye, Daniel.""
I drove away before he could answer.
The next morning, I met Robert at his office.
He had printed everything and arranged the documents into three separate folders.
One contained the bank transfers.
The second contained the suspicious authorization.
The third contained the hospital records.
I sat across from him.
"Start with the hospital.""
Robert opened the folder.
"The payment was made four years ago. It was for a private fertility consultation and a separate laboratory procedure.""
"Whose procedure?""
He turned the paper toward me.
The patient name was Vanessa Carter.
I felt the room tilt.
"Why was my business account paying for her medical treatment?""
Robert shook his head.
"That's what we need to establish.""
I turned another page.
There were two signatures.
One belonged to Daniel.
The other was supposedly mine.
I stared at the date.
Four years earlier.
The same week Daniel had told me the doctors believed I couldn't carry a child.
My eyes filled.
"Robert, I need the original medical records.""
"I've already requested them through the proper legal channels.""
I wiped my face.
"Who is Vanessa Carter?""
Robert hesitated.
"I searched the public records associated with her address. She's thirty-two. She has a four-year-old son.""
My hands went numb.
Four years.
The same age as the child I had spent years believing I might never have.
"What's his name?""
Robert looked down at his notes.
"Oliver Carter.""
I whispered the name.
Then Robert slid another photograph across the desk.
It showed Daniel standing outside a family home, holding the hand of a little boy with dark brown hair.
Daniel was smiling.
Not the exhausted smile he gave me after work.
Not the polite smile he used at family gatherings.
It was the smile of a man who looked completely at home.
On the back of the photograph was a handwritten date.
And underneath it, five words:
*"Daddy's first day at preschool.""*
I couldn't breathe.
Robert quietly closed the folder.
"Sarah, there's something else you should know.""
I looked at him.
He placed one final document on the table.
It was a hospital birth registration.
The father's name was Daniel Mitchell.
But the mother's name wasn't Vanessa Carter.
It was Patricia Mitchell.
My mother-in-law.
And beside the child's birth details was a handwritten note that changed everything:
*"Biological mother: Patricia Mitchell. Child conceived using donor material and carried by Vanessa.""*
I stared at the document.
Then my phone began ringing.
Daniel.
I declined the call.
A second later, a text appeared.
Sarah, please don't believe what Robert tells you. There's a reason Mom has been helping me keep this secret.
Before I could respond, another message arrived.
You need to come to the hospital. Mom has collapsed.
May you like
And then a final message from an unknown number:
If you want to know why Patricia has been controlling your marriage for eight years, ask Daniel what happened to the baby you lost.
