Chapter 4: The Signature That Exposed My Husband
Daniel stared at the tablet as if it contained a photograph of a dead man.
His signature was unmistakable.
Three years of complimentary presidential suites. Private dining. Luxury transportation. Exclusive access to hotel facilities.
All charged to a private account established under my name.
My father's name appeared at the top of every authorization document.
But Daniel's signature appeared at the bottom.
"Explain this," Richard Bennett said.
Daniel swallowed.
"It's not what you think.""
My father placed the tablet on the nearest table.
"Then I'm listening.""
Eleanor immediately stepped between them.
"Richard, surely there's a reasonable explanation. Daniel has always handled our family's financial arrangements.""
Dad looked at her.
"That's interesting. I don't remember appointing him to handle mine.""
Daniel rubbed the back of his neck.
"Vivienne, you know how expensive everything has been. We were newly married. I thought it would be harmless to use your family's account.""
I stared at him.
"My family's account?""
"Just for accommodations. Nothing else.""
"Three years of presidential suites?""
He sighed.
"Your father owns the hotel. It's not as though we were stealing money.""
My father gave a humorless laugh.
"That's exactly what you were doing. You used an account you weren't authorized to access.""
Chloe suddenly stepped forward.
"Well, Daniel told us Vivienne had unlimited hotel privileges!""
I turned toward her.
"What?""
Chloe looked at her brother.
"You told Mom that your wife had given you permission to use the account!""
Daniel's face hardened.
"Chloe, shut up.""
But she was already speaking.
"You said her father wanted us to enjoy the benefits because we were family!""
My stomach tightened.
Daniel had never mentioned any of this to me.
Not once.
I remembered the weekend Eleanor insisted on staying in the presidential suite because the standard rooms were supposedly beneath her.
I remembered Chloe's birthday celebration, when she ordered thousands of dollars in champagne.
I remembered Daniel telling me not to worry about the bills.
Apparently, I had been paying for a family that despised me.
"Daniel," I said quietly.
"Did you tell them my father had approved everything?""
He looked at the floor.
"Vivienne, I was going to tell you.""
"When?""
He didn't answer.
Dad turned to Mr. Harrison.
"Freeze all unauthorized privileges immediately. Preserve the account records and forward them to our legal department.""
Eleanor's eyes widened.
"You're canceling our privileges because of one family argument?""
"No," Dad replied.
"I'm canceling them because they were never yours.""
Chloe began crying again.
"Mom, what about the honeymoon suite? We've already invited everyone to the after-party tomorrow!""
Eleanor grabbed her daughter's arm.
"Stop talking.""
Then she turned toward my father, her voice suddenly sweet.
"Mr. Bennett, I understand that emotions are high. But perhaps we can discuss this privately. Our families are connected through marriage.""
Dad glanced at me.
"That connection is between my daughter and your son. It doesn't give you ownership of my company.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"Mr. Bennett, I made a mistake. I admit that. But I love Vivienne.""
I looked at him.
"Did you love me when you watched your mother tear my dress?""
He closed his eyes.
"Please don't do this.""
"Did you love me when you handed Chloe my purse?""
"Vivienne—"
"Did you love me when you let your mother kick our daughter's ultrasound photograph across the floor?""
His voice broke.
"I didn't know what to do.""
I shook my head.
"You knew exactly what to do. You just didn't want your mother to be angry with you.""
The silence was unbearable.
Then Dad gently touched my shoulder.
"Sweetheart, let's get you somewhere comfortable.""
I nodded.
As we turned toward the private elevator, Daniel hurried after us.
"Vivienne, wait!""
I stopped.
He held up his phone.
"Look, I'll cancel everything. I'll repay whatever we owe. Just don't let this become a public scandal.""
I looked at him for a long moment.
"You still don't understand.""
"What?""
"You are worried about people finding out what you did. I'm worried about the daughter I almost brought into a family that thinks cruelty is acceptable.""
His face crumpled.
Dad pressed the elevator button.
Just before the doors closed, Eleanor called after us.
"Vivienne! Don't think your father's money makes you better than us!""
I didn't turn around.
But my father did.
"No, Eleanor. Her character makes her better than the people who just humiliated her.""
The elevator doors closed.
Inside, I finally allowed myself to cry.
Dad held my hand.
"I'm sorry, sweetheart.""
I shook my head.
"You didn't do anything wrong.""
"I should have told you about the account. I trusted the arrangements were being handled properly.""
I looked at him.
"What account?""
He hesitated.
Then he reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded document.
"There's something else you need to know.""
He handed it to me.
It was a copy of a trust agreement.
My name appeared at the top.
So did the name of my unborn daughter.
And beneath it was a provision I had never seen before.
*Upon the birth of Richard Bennett's granddaughter, a controlling interest in Bennett Hospitality Group shall be transferred into a protected family trust.*
I stared at the page.
"Dad, what is this?""
He looked at me carefully.
"Your grandfather established it before he died. He wanted his great-granddaughter protected.""
I read the next paragraph.
My eyes stopped at the final line.
The trust's independent administrator had been changed six months earlier.
I looked up.
"Who authorized this?""
Dad's expression became serious.
"That's what my legal team has been investigating.""
He paused.
"Vivienne, someone has been trying to gain access to your daughter's inheritance.""
May you like
And when he showed me the name on the amended document, my hands began to tremble.
It was Daniel.
