Chapter 1: The Night My Husband Chose His Mother
"SEARCH HER PURSE! THAT PARASITE STOLE MY GRANDMOTHER'S DIAMOND RING!""
My sister-in-law's scream cut through the ballroom like a gunshot.
Two hundred wedding guests turned toward me.
I stood frozen beneath the golden chandeliers of the Grand Wellington Hotel in Manhattan, one hand resting on my eight-month pregnant belly, the other gripping the tiny purse hanging from my wrist.
My sister-in-law, Chloe Whitmore, stood ten feet away in her designer wedding gown, pointing directly at me.
"Vivienne stole my grandmother's diamond ring!""
I stared at her.
"Chloe, that's ridiculous. I haven't even been near your jewelry.""
She lifted her left hand dramatically.
"Then explain why my ring disappeared right after you came into the bridal suite!""
"I never went into your bridal suite.""
My mother-in-law, Eleanor, approached with the expression of someone who had finally caught a criminal.
"Don't insult our intelligence, Vivienne.""
Her heels clicked against the marble floor.
"Three years you've been pretending to be a respectable member of this family. Perhaps tonight we finally discover what you've been hiding.""
I looked at my husband.
Daniel stood beside me in his black tuxedo, adjusting his cufflinks.
"Daniel?""
He didn't answer.
"Please tell them I didn't take anything.""
He exhaled impatiently.
"Vivienne, just let them search your purse. If there's nothing in it, this will be over.""
I blinked.
"You believe I stole her ring?""
"That's not what I said.""
"But you're letting your mother accuse me in front of everyone.""
Eleanor laughed.
"Oh, don't start playing the victim. It's exhausting.""
Chloe stepped closer.
"Open your purse.""
"No.""
Her eyebrows rose.
"What did you say?""
"I said no. You have no right to search my personal belongings.""
Chloe looked toward her mother.
Eleanor immediately understood.
She stepped behind me and planted her heel on the long train of my maternity gown.
"Don't move," she ordered.
I turned.
"What are you doing?""
Chloe grabbed my wrist.
"Then we'll do it ourselves!""
She yanked my arm.
The sound of expensive silk tearing echoed across the ballroom.
Rrrrrip.
My gown split from the shoulder down toward my waist.
I screamed, instinctively pulling the fabric across my body.
The room went silent.
A woman near the dance floor covered her mouth. Someone dropped a champagne glass.
"Stop! I'm pregnant!""
Eleanor removed her foot from the ruined fabric.
"Then perhaps you should have thought about that before stealing from my daughter.""
I could barely breathe.
My father had commissioned that dress from a private designer in Paris. He had insisted on choosing the softest silk because he wanted his granddaughter's first family celebration to be special.
Now the gown was ruined.
And my husband was still standing there.
"Daniel," I whispered.
"Please.""
He looked uncomfortable, but not angry.
"Mom, that's enough.""
Eleanor turned sharply.
"Don't you dare tell me how to handle this. Chloe's grandmother's ring is worth more than this woman's entire wardrobe.""
Daniel said nothing.
Then, instead of taking me away, he reached for my purse.
"Give it to me.""
I pulled back.
"Daniel, no.""
"Vivienne, stop making this worse.""
He took it from my wrist and handed it to Chloe.
She immediately dumped its contents onto the marble.
My wallet.
My keys.
Prenatal vitamins.
A lipstick.
And the ultrasound photograph of our daughter.
The photograph slid across the floor and stopped beneath Eleanor's shoe.
I rushed forward.
"Please, don't step on that!""
Eleanor looked down.
Then she moved her shoe deliberately, pushing the photograph farther across the marble.
"Your little tricks won't work here.""
I knelt painfully, one hand supporting my belly, and retrieved the picture.
Our daughter's tiny profile stared back at me.
I wiped away a smudge with my thumb.
There was no diamond ring.
Chloe's face changed.
"She must have hidden it somewhere else!""
"Enough," I said quietly.
But Eleanor wasn't finished.
"Call security! Have her searched properly!""
I slowly stood.
My eyes moved from Eleanor to Chloe, then finally to Daniel.
"Do you remember what you promised me when we got married?""
Daniel frowned.
"Not now, Vivienne.""
"You promised that I would never have to face your family alone.""
He looked away.
That was my answer.
For three years, I'd endured Eleanor's comments about my inexpensive handbags, my ordinary clothes, and my supposed lack of family connections.
I had never told them the truth.
Not because I was ashamed.
Because my father had taught me that wealth wasn't something I needed to use to earn respect.
Apparently, I had married into a family that understood nothing about respect.
I reached into my torn gown and pulled out my phone.
Eleanor smirked.
"Who are you calling? Your poor father?""
I looked directly at her.
"Yes.""
I dialed one number.
"Dad?""
My father's familiar voice answered immediately.
"Sweetheart? Is everything all right?""
I swallowed.
"No, Dad. It's not.""
His tone changed.
"What happened?""
"My mother-in-law tore my maternity gown. Chloe accused me of stealing her grandmother's ring. They dumped my purse on the floor, and Daniel stood there watching.""
Silence.
Then my father asked one question.
"Where is my granddaughter's father?""
I looked at Daniel.
"Standing beside them.""
Another silence.
Then Dad spoke.
"Are you still at the Grand Wellington?""
"Yes.""
"Don't leave. Don't sign anything. Don't let anyone touch you. I'm coming.""
The call ended.
Eleanor burst into laughter.
"Wonderful! Now we're getting the entire poor family involved!""
But she stopped laughing when the ballroom doors opened.
The hotel's general manager hurried inside, followed by two security officers.
He looked at my torn gown.
Then he saw the small black card lying beside my ultrasound photograph.
He picked it up.
His face went completely white.
"Mrs. Whitmore?""
I nodded.
He straightened immediately.
"Ma'am, may I ask why you're being treated this way in our hotel?""
Chloe rolled her eyes.
"Because she's a thief! Get her out!""
The manager didn't even look at her.
Instead, he turned toward the entire ballroom.
"Everyone, please remain where you are.""
Then he looked at Daniel.
"Sir, I strongly suggest you step away from your wife.""
Daniel frowned.
"Excuse me?""
The manager held up the black card.
May you like
"Because the woman you've just allowed your family to humiliate happens to be the daughter of the man who owns this hotel.""
And for the first time that evening, nobody laughed.
