Chapter 13: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Protect Us

Nobody moved.

Margaret Collins stood beside the table, holding a small brass key between her fingers.

My father looked at her.

"What is that?""

Margaret swallowed.

"My father gave it to me shortly before he disappeared.""

Thomas Reed lowered his head.

"I knew it.""

Margaret turned toward him.

"You knew my father was alive?""

"I suspected. I didn't know where he was.""

My mother stepped closer.

"Margaret, what does that key open?""

Margaret looked at the key.

"A private archive beneath the old Bennett estate.""

Dad frowned.

"There's no archive beneath the estate.""

"There is. My father designed it. He told me about it when I was a child.""

I looked at the key.

"Why didn't you tell us?""

Margaret's eyes filled.

"Because I was afraid of what I might find.""

My father stepped forward.

"Margaret, you've been my attorney for twelve years. Are you telling me you knew your father might be involved in the fraud?""

She nodded.

"I found a letter in his belongings after he disappeared. It mentioned the original ownership ledger and a payment from Eleanor Whitmore.""

Dad's expression hardened.

"And you kept that from me?""

"I was twenty-three. I didn't understand everything. I thought my father had been framed.""

Thomas slowly shook his head.

"Arthur wasn't innocent, Miss Collins.""

Margaret turned sharply.

"Don't.""

"He helped create the false ownership documents.""

"Stop!""

Her voice broke.

For the first time, I saw Margaret as something other than the confident lawyer who always seemed to have an answer.

She was a daughter who had spent years trying to believe her father wasn't a criminal.

Then she looked at me.

"Vivienne, I need you to know something. I never intended to hurt you.""

I held her gaze.

"But you knew something was wrong.""

"Yes.""

"And you stayed silent.""

She lowered her eyes.

I looked at my father.

"How do we know she hasn't been helping Eleanor?""

Dad didn't answer immediately.

Then he turned toward Margaret.

"Give me the key.""

She hesitated.

"Richard—"

"Now.""

Margaret placed it in his palm.

Dad handed it to one of the security officers.

"Nobody touches those documents until independent investigators arrive.""

Margaret nodded.

"That's fair.""

Thomas suddenly gripped the edge of the table.

"There's no time. Eleanor knows we're here.""

My mother frowned.

"How?""

Thomas looked toward the window.

"Because she has someone watching this facility.""

At that exact moment, a car pulled into the driveway.

A black luxury sedan.

Then another.

The security officer approached the window.

"Mr. Bennett, we have three vehicles outside.""

Dad immediately called his head of security.

"Lock down the building. Nobody enters or leaves without authorization.""

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered.

"Why did you tell me to be afraid of Margaret?""

His voice sounded desperate.

"Because my mother told me Margaret was working with her.""

"How do you know?""

"I found emails between them.""

I looked at Margaret.

She was watching me.

"What emails?""

"Payments. Instructions. My mother was paying Margaret's firm to delay the trust transfer.""

Margaret's face went white.

"That's a lie," she whispered.

Daniel continued.

"Vivienne, listen. I know I've done terrible things. I know I don't deserve your forgiveness. But I never wanted anyone to hurt you.""

I closed my eyes.

"Did you marry me because Eleanor ordered you to?""

A long pause.

"Yes.""

The answer landed like a physical blow.

"But I didn't expect to love you.""

"Did you know about the inheritance?""

"Yes.""

"Did you plan to steal it?""

"I planned to get access to it. I told myself I would stop before anything happened.""

I laughed bitterly.

"You always had a reason to stop tomorrow.""

He began crying.

"Vivienne, I was weak. I know that now.""

"Where are you?""

"At the Grand Wellington.""

"Why?""

"My mother is meeting Arthur Collins there. They're planning to submit the final trust documents tonight.""

I looked at Dad.

"How did you find out?""

"Because I stole a copy of their meeting schedule.""

"Why are you helping me now?""

His voice dropped.

"Because Eleanor told me something yesterday. She said that after the baby is born, there won't be any reason to keep pretending.""

I felt cold.

"What does that mean?""

"She wants you removed from the company permanently.""

Dad reached for the phone.

"Daniel, this is Richard Bennett. Where is my sister?""

Daniel hesitated.

"At the hotel. In the executive offices.""

"Is Arthur with her?""

"Yes.""

"Then stay where you are. Don't confront them.""

Daniel agreed.

I ended the call.

My father turned toward Margaret.

"You're coming with us.""

She nodded.

"Of course.""

But Thomas suddenly raised his voice.

"Wait!""

He pointed at the key.

"That isn't the key to the archive.""

Dad frowned.

"What?""

Thomas looked at Margaret.

"Arthur gave you the wrong key.""

Margaret slowly opened her handbag.

She removed another brass key.

"I have the real one.""

My mother stepped backward.

"Margaret, what have you done?""

Margaret looked at me.

Then she spoke so quietly that everyone had to lean closer.

"I've been keeping the original trust documents safe for twelve years.""

She placed the key on the table.

"And I know exactly who forged the ownership transfer.""

Before anyone could respond, the security officer rushed into the room.

"Mr. Bennett, we've got a problem.""

"What?""

"Mrs. Whitmore is on the phone with the police.""

Dad frowned.

"Why?""

The officer looked directly at me.

"She's reporting that Vivienne Bennett has kidnapped an elderly witness and stolen confidential company documents.""

I stared at him.

Then Margaret picked up the key.

"She's trying to get ahead of us.""

My mother squeezed my hand.

"No, sweetheart. She's doing something worse.""

Mom looked toward the door.

May you like

"She's trying to make sure nobody believes you when you tell them the truth.""

And then the police arrived.
