Chapter 3: The Footage They Never Expected Anyone to See

The ballroom doors closed.

Two security officers took positions beside them.

Nobody was dancing anymore.

The wedding cake, a five-tier masterpiece decorated with white roses, stood untouched beneath the chandelier.

My father stood beside me, one hand resting gently on my shoulder.

Daniel approached us.

"Mr. Bennett, I think we should discuss this without involving the guests.""

Dad looked at him.

"Your family involved two hundred guests when they accused my daughter of theft. Why should we suddenly become concerned about privacy?""

Daniel swallowed.

"That's not what I meant.""

"Then choose your next words carefully.""

Mr. Harrison brought a tablet from the security office.

He connected it to the ballroom's large display screen.

"Sir, we have three relevant recordings.""

Eleanor folded her arms.

"This is completely unnecessary. The ring has been found.""

My father looked at her.

"Mrs. Whitmore, my daughter was publicly accused of theft. Her clothing was deliberately torn. Her personal belongings were scattered across the floor.""

He paused.

"Finding the ring doesn't undo any of that.""

Chloe stepped forward.

"You're acting like I committed a crime! I was upset because my grandmother's ring disappeared!""

"Then let's establish what happened," Dad replied.

Mr. Harrison pressed play.

The first recording showed the ballroom entrance at 5:42 p.m.

Guests were arriving.

Waiters moved between tables.

Then Chloe appeared on screen.

She was wearing her wedding robe, holding a champagne glass.

She walked toward a flower arrangement near the west service corridor.

The footage showed her glancing over both shoulders.

Then she removed something from her clutch.

A small velvet box.

She opened it.

The diamond ring was clearly visible.

A gasp swept through the ballroom.

Chloe jumped to her feet.

"That's not what it looks like!""

My father didn't move.

"Please continue.""

On screen, Chloe slipped the ring into the flower arrangement.

Then she walked away.

Daniel stared at the screen.

"Chloe?""

His sister shook her head.

"There's an explanation!""

Eleanor stepped between her daughter and the tablet.

"Stop this immediately! You cannot publicly accuse my daughter based on a blurry recording!""

Mr. Harrison enlarged the image.

The ring was unmistakable.

And so was Chloe's face.

My father looked at the manager.

"Next recording.""

The second video showed a corridor outside the bridal suite.

At 6:03 p.m., Eleanor entered the frame.

She was carrying a small black purse.

Mine.

I felt my stomach tighten.

"That's my purse," I whispered.

Dad's hand tightened on my shoulder.

The footage continued.

Eleanor entered the bridal suite, opened the purse, and placed something inside.

Then she looked directly toward the camera.

She smiled.

The room erupted in whispers.

Eleanor's face drained of color.

"That's edited!""

Mr. Harrison shook his head.

"Our cameras use continuous cloud backup. The original recording is preserved.""

Chloe began crying.

"Mom, why did you do that?""

Eleanor turned toward her.

"Be quiet!""

But the damage was already done.

I looked at Daniel.

He appeared to be struggling to understand what he had just witnessed.

"Mom," he said slowly.

"You put something in Vivienne's purse?""

Eleanor raised her chin.

"I was protecting this family.""

"By framing my wife?""

"Don't be ridiculous! I was trying to prove a point!""

My father stepped forward.

"What point?""

Eleanor pointed at me.

"That she has been deceiving you! She never told anyone about her family. She married my son and made him believe she was an ordinary woman!""

I stared at her.

"I am an ordinary woman, Eleanor. I just happen to have a wealthy father.""

"That's not the same thing!""

"Why? Because you would have treated me differently if you knew?""

She said nothing.

Dad looked toward the manager.

"Is there more?""

Mr. Harrison nodded.

"The third recording is from the ballroom itself.""

He pressed play.

The screen showed the reception twenty minutes earlier.

It captured Chloe approaching me.

It showed Eleanor stepping on my gown.

It showed Chloe pulling my arm.

It showed the fabric tearing.

Then came the most painful moment.

The recording clearly showed Daniel taking my purse and handing it to his sister.

My father's expression became unreadable.

He watched the entire scene without blinking.

When the video ended, he turned toward Daniel.

"Did you know the accusation was false?""

Daniel shook his head.

"No, sir.""

"Did you see my daughter asking you for help?""

"Yes.""

"Did you see her being physically pulled while she was eight months pregnant?""

Daniel lowered his eyes.

"Yes.""

"And what did you do?""

Daniel's voice was barely audible.

"I thought it would be better to cooperate.""

My father nodded slowly.

"Thank you. That's all I needed to know.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Please, sir. I love Vivienne.""

Dad looked at him.

"Love is not a word you use after allowing someone to destroy the person you promised to protect.""

Daniel turned toward me.

"Vivienne, please. Let's go home and talk.""

I stared at him.

"Which home, Daniel? The one you share with your mother, where she decides whether I deserve to be respected?""

He shook his head.

"I can explain.""

I touched my belly.

"Your daughter heard me screaming tonight.""

His face crumpled.

"Don't say that.""

"She heard her mother beg her father for help. And she heard you choose silence.""

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Eleanor suddenly stepped toward my father.

"Mr. Bennett, surely we can settle this like civilized people. Chloe's wedding shouldn't be ruined over a misunderstanding.""

Dad looked at her.

"A misunderstanding?""

He gestured toward the screen.

"Your daughter hid the ring. You placed it in my daughter's purse. Then you tore her maternity gown when the accusation failed.""

Eleanor's mouth tightened.

"Well, we didn't know who she was!""

My father went completely still.

That sentence changed something in the room.

He looked at her for several seconds.

Then he asked quietly:

"So if she had been poor, what you did would have been acceptable?""

Eleanor opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Dad turned toward Mr. Harrison.

"Please contact our legal department. Preserve every recording, every access log, and every witness statement. I want the police informed about the deliberate false accusation and the physical incident.""

Chloe began sobbing.

"You're going to have me arrested on my wedding day?""

Dad didn't look at her.

"You chose to make this day unforgettable for my daughter. I intend to make sure the truth is remembered.""

Daniel suddenly reached for my hand.

"Vivienne, please. Don't let this destroy our marriage.""

I pulled my hand away.

"You destroyed it when you handed my purse to your sister.""

My father turned toward the manager.

"One more thing. I want every outstanding account connected to the Whitmore family reviewed.""

Eleanor frowned.

"What accounts?""

Mr. Harrison looked uncomfortable.

"Sir, there is something else you should know.""

He opened another document on his tablet.

"For the past three years, the Whitmore family has been receiving complimentary presidential suite accommodations, private dining privileges, and transportation through a special account.""

Dad looked at him.

"Who authorized it?""

The manager hesitated.

Then he answered.

"Your office, sir. Specifically, the private account established for Mrs. Vivienne Whitmore.""

Daniel looked at me.

"You paid for our hotel stays?""

I shook my head.

"I didn't even know you were using that account.""

Dad's expression darkened.

He read the authorization document carefully.

Then he looked up.

"That's impossible. I never approved these additional benefits.""

Mr. Harrison zoomed in on the signature.

And suddenly, my father stopped speaking.

Because the signature authorizing three years of luxury accommodations wasn't mine.

It wasn't his either.

It belonged to someone standing in that ballroom.

Someone who had been pretending to be the victim all evening.

May you like

My father slowly turned the tablet toward Daniel.

"Son, would you care to explain why your signature is on my private company account?""
