Chapter 10: The Secret Buried Before Ava

I didn’t tell Daniel everything immediately.

Not because I wanted to hide something.

Because for the first time in my marriage, I wasn’t sure who I could trust.

The phone call replayed in my mind over and over.

Your daughter is in danger because of something her father did before she was even born.

Daniel was standing in front of me, waiting for an answer.

“What did he mean?””

I looked at him.

“I don’t know.””

It was the truth.

But I saw the fear in his eyes.

And I knew he was hiding something.

“You do know something.””

He looked away.

That was enough.

“Daniel.””

He sat down slowly.

“I didn’t know he was alive.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

He rubbed his hands together.

“I need to tell you about something that happened before we met.””

I crossed my arms.

“Finally.””

He looked hurt.

But I didn’t apologize.

Not this time.

“I was twenty-three,” he said.

“My father came back into my life.””

I stayed silent.

“He had been gone for years. My mother always told me he was dangerous. That he only cared about himself.””

Daniel stared at the floor.

“But when he came back, he acted different.””

“Different how?””

“He said he wanted to fix things.””

I almost smiled.

“People who hurt families always say that.””

Daniel nodded.

“I know that now.””

He took a deep breath.

“He wanted me to sign some documents.””

My stomach tightened.

“The same kind of documents?””

“Yes.””

“What were they?””

He looked at me.

“Family inheritance papers.””

I waited.

“And?””

“And a private agreement.””

“What kind of agreement?””

Daniel’s silence told me everything.

“Daniel.””

He finally whispered:

“An agreement about future children.””

My entire body went cold.

“Future children?””

“He believed our family name had to continue in a certain way.””

I felt disgust rising inside me.

“Are you saying your father was planning this before Ava was even born?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The room felt smaller.

All those comments.

All those moments.

Margaret criticizing Ava’s hair.

Margaret saying she didn’t belong.

It wasn’t random.

It had roots.

“How could you marry me and never tell me?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because I was ashamed.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice became quiet.

“You were afraid.””

He didn’t deny it.

We spent the next hour going through every document we could find.

Bank records.

Old emails.

Family files.

Anything connected to Daniel’s parents.

Then I found something.

A folder hidden beneath old tax papers.

Inside was a photograph.

A young Daniel.

Standing beside his father.

Behind them was a building I didn’t recognize.

On the back of the photo was a handwritten note.

*The Carter legacy begins with the first child.*

I stared at the words.

“This is about Ava.””

Daniel took the photo.

His face changed.

“I’ve never seen this.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“Yes.””

For some reason, I did.

Because Daniel looked just as horrified as I felt.

Then another paper fell from the folder.

A medical document.

I picked it up.

“What is this?””

Daniel looked.

Then froze.

“It’s a DNA report.””

My heart started pounding.

“Whose?””

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

His hand shook as he took the paper.

Then he whispered:

“It’s mine.””

I frowned.

“What?””

He looked confused.

“This was done before Ava was born.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

He turned the page.

And his face went completely pale.

“Because my father was trying to prove something.””

“What?””

Daniel looked at me.

“He thought Ava would be special.””

I felt a chill.

“What does that mean?””

Before he could answer, the front door opened.

We both froze.

Ava’s voice came from the hallway.

“Mommy?””

I ran toward her.

She was standing there with Lily.

Safe.

Alive.

But behind them was someone else.

A woman.

Margaret.

My heart dropped.

“What are you doing here?””

Margaret looked at Daniel.

Then at the papers in my hand.

Her expression changed.

“You found them.””

I stepped in front of Ava.

“You knew.””

Margaret didn’t deny it.

“I was trying to protect this family.””

I laughed.

“By hurting my daughter?””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You don’t understand what she is.””

Ava grabbed my hand.

I looked at Margaret.

“What did you just say?””

May you like

Margaret whispered:

“You have no idea what Daniel’s father discovered.””
