Chapter 13: The Man Behind the Shadow

The police arrived twenty minutes later.

But by then, the person who had entered our house was already gone.

That was the part I couldn’t understand.

Someone had walked into our home.

Someone had stood near my daughter’s bed.

Someone had taken a photograph while she slept.

And nobody had heard anything.

I sat on the edge of Ava’s bed, holding her hand while an officer checked the window.

Daniel stood near the doorway.

For once, he wasn’t trying to explain.

He was just watching.

Watching me.

Watching Ava.

Watching the damage his family had brought into our lives.

The officer turned around.

“There are no obvious signs of forced entry.””

My stomach dropped.

“What does that mean?””

“It means whoever came inside may have known how to enter.””

I looked at Daniel.

His face changed.

The officer noticed.

“Mr. Carter?””

Daniel swallowed.

“My father used to have a key.””

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

“You never changed the locks?””

He looked away.

“I didn’t think he was alive.””

I closed my eyes.

Another secret.

Another thing I didn’t know.

The officer left after taking the photograph as evidence.

But the fear stayed.

Because whoever Daniel’s father was, he wasn’t just a ghost from the past.

He was real.

And he was close.

The next morning, Daniel finally told me everything.

Not pieces.

Not half-truths.

Everything.

“My father’s name is Richard Carter.””

We sat at the kitchen table.

Ava was at Lily’s house.

Safe.

Away from this.

“He disappeared when I was seventeen,” Daniel continued.

“Why?””

Daniel looked down.

“Because my mother found out what he was doing.””

“What was he doing?””

Daniel took a deep breath.

“He was obsessed with our family history.””

I waited.

“He believed certain traits passed through generations.””

I frowned.

“Traits?””

“He believed some children were born with something different.””

I looked at him.

“And he thought Ava was one of them?””

Daniel nodded.

“He started tracking my life after I met you.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Before we even had Ava?””

“Yes.””

I remembered the photograph.

The one taken the day she was born.

“They knew about her.””

Daniel nodded.

“My father somehow knew you were pregnant before I told him.””

My hands tightened.

“How?””

“I don’t know.””

For once, he didn’t pretend.

Then Margaret entered the kitchen.

She looked exhausted.

“I know how.””

I turned.

She stood there holding the old notebook.

“Richard had someone watching you.””

Daniel stood immediately.

“You knew?””

“I suspected.””

His anger exploded.

“You suspected someone was watching my wife and child?””

Margaret looked ashamed.

“I thought I could stop him.””

“You couldn’t even stop yourself.””

The words hurt her.

But she deserved them.

She looked at me.

“I was wrong.””

I didn’t answer.

Because apologies didn’t erase memories.

Not the trash can.

Not Ava crying.

Not the fear in her eyes.

Margaret opened the notebook.

“There’s something you need to see.””

She flipped through pages until she reached the back.

A handwritten list.

Names.

Dates.

Locations.

Then one name was circled.

Ava Carter.

Below it was another line.

*The final decision belongs to the father.*

I looked at Daniel.

“What does that mean?””

His face went pale.

“I don’t know.””

Then Margaret whispered:

“I do.””

Everyone turned toward her.

“Richard wanted Daniel to choose.””

“Choose what?”” I asked.

Her voice trembled.

“Whether Ava stays with you…”

She looked at Daniel.

“…or returns to the Carter family.””

The room went cold.

That afternoon, Daniel received a message.

No number.

No name.

Just one sentence.

*Meet me alone if you want your daughter safe.*

I grabbed his phone.

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“I have to.””

“You absolutely do not.””

“If he has information—”

“If he has information, we go together.””

Daniel shook his head.

“He wants me.””

I stared at him.

“That’s exactly why you can’t go alone.””

For years, Daniel had believed he could handle everything himself.

And every time, someone else paid the price.

This time, it wouldn’t happen.

Daniel looked at me.

Then nodded.

“Together.””

May you like

But neither of us knew that Richard wasn’t planning a conversation.

He was planning a final move.
