Chapter 14: The Choice Daniel Never Made
The meeting place was an abandoned farmhouse outside Dallas.
The kind of place people passed without noticing.
Broken fence.
Overgrown grass.
A house slowly being taken back by nature.
Daniel parked the car.
I sat beside him.
Neither of us spoke.
Then he looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked out the window.
“I know.””
“I mean it.””
I turned toward him.
“I believe you.””
That surprised him.
“But I’m still hurt.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
For the first time, Daniel wasn’t asking me to forgive him.
He was accepting that he had to earn it.
We walked toward the house together.
The door opened before we reached it.
An older man stepped outside.
Daniel stopped.
His face changed.
“Dad.””
Richard Carter looked exactly like someone from a memory.
Older.
Tired.
But still carrying the same confidence Daniel described.
He looked at me.
Then at Daniel.
“You brought her.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“She’s my wife.””
Richard smiled slightly.
“And she’s why everything changed.””
I immediately stepped closer to Daniel.
“Where is my daughter?””
Richard looked offended.
“I haven’t touched her.””
“Someone entered my home.””
His expression shifted.
“I needed you to understand the seriousness.””
Daniel’s anger exploded.
“You terrified a child.””
Richard looked at him.
“You still don’t understand.””
“No.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“I understand exactly.””
Richard studied him.
“You chose her.””
Daniel didn’t hesitate.
“Yes.””
The old man’s expression hardened.
“Even after everything I taught you?””
Daniel shook his head.
“That was the problem.””
A silence followed.
Then Richard laughed quietly.
“You were always weak.””
I felt Daniel tense.
But he stayed calm.
“No.””
He looked at his father.
“I was afraid.””
Richard’s smile disappeared.
“And now?””
Daniel looked back at me.
Then said:
“Now I’m a father.””
For the first time, Richard looked uncertain.
Because he had expected Daniel to obey.
Not stand up.
Not choose.
Richard reached into his coat.
I immediately moved.
“What are you doing?””
He pulled out a folder.
Not a weapon.
Documents.
“You want the truth?””
He handed them to Daniel.
“These are the records.””
Daniel opened them.
His eyes moved across the pages.
Then he stopped.
“What is this?””
Richard looked at me.
“Ava is not what you think.””
My heart tightened.
“She’s a child.””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
Then he said:
“But she is also proof.””
“Proof of what?””
Richard looked at Daniel.
“That your family’s bloodline changed.””
I felt anger rising.
“She is not a science project.””
Richard’s expression softened slightly.
“No.””
He looked almost sad.
“She is the reason I spent my whole life searching.””
Daniel closed the folder.
“You’re done.””
Richard stared at him.
“You think you can walk away?””
“Yes.””
Daniel turned.
Then Richard spoke one final sentence.
A sentence that made him stop.
“Ask your wife what happened the night Ava was born.””
I froze.
Because I had never told Daniel something.
Something I had buried.
Something from the hospital.
Richard smiled.
“You never told him.””
Daniel slowly turned toward me.
“Rachel?””
May you like
My heart started pounding.
Because I knew exactly what Richard was talking about.
