Chapter 11: The Truth Margaret Was Hiding
I wanted to throw Margaret out.
Every instinct in me screamed to protect Ava.
But something stopped me.
For the first time, Margaret wasn’t angry.
She was afraid.
And that scared me more.
“What did Daniel’s father discover?”” I asked.
Margaret looked toward Ava.
Then immediately looked away.
“I shouldn’t have said anything.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You don’t get to drop a sentence like that and walk away.””
Daniel stood behind me.
“Mom.””
She looked at him.
“You were supposed to understand.””
His face tightened.
“Understand what?””
“That this was bigger than us.””
I stared at her.
“Bigger than a six-year-old child being dragged toward a trash can?””
Margaret flinched.
For the first time, she looked ashamed.
“I lost control.””
“No.””
My voice was cold.
“You showed who you really are.””
Daniel moved between us.
“Mom, tell us the truth.””
Margaret looked at him for a long moment.
Then she sat down.
“I met your father when I was young.””
Nobody spoke.
“He believed our family carried something important.””
I crossed my arms.
“Here we go.””
She looked at me.
“You think this is about appearance.””
“Isn’t it?””
“No.””
Her answer was immediate.
“It started that way for him.””
She looked at Ava.
“But it became something else.””
I felt uneasy.
“What?””
Margaret swallowed.
“Your father believed children carried pieces of their family’s future.””
Daniel frowned.
“That makes no sense.””
“He believed Ava was the child mentioned in his research.””
I almost laughed.
Except nobody else did.
“What research?””
Margaret looked at Daniel.
“You never told her.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Mom.””
“What?””
She shook her head.
“You kept pretending you didn’t know.””
I turned toward Daniel.
“Know what?””
He looked trapped.
“I don’t know what she’s talking about.””
Margaret stood.
“Your father spent years studying our family history.””
“History?””
“Records. Genealogy. Old stories.””
I stared at her.
“And you believed him?””
She looked at Ava.
“I was afraid.””
That answer surprised me.
Not because I forgave her.
I didn’t.
But because I finally saw something underneath her cruelty.
Fear.
“What were you afraid of?”” I asked.
Margaret’s voice lowered.
“That if we lost control of Ava, something terrible would happen.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You tried to take my daughter because of a story?””
Margaret looked at him.
“Because of what your father proved.””
She reached into her bag.
Then pulled out a small notebook.
Old.
Worn.
She placed it on the table.
“This belonged to him.””
Daniel opened it.
The first pages were filled with handwriting.
Names.
Dates.
Family connections.
Then he stopped.
“What?””
I looked over his shoulder.
There was a page with one sentence circled.
*The child born from two worlds will decide what remains.*
I felt a chill.
“That’s why you wanted Ava?””
Margaret looked at me.
“No.””
She looked at Daniel.
“I wanted Daniel to decide before it was too late.””
The room became silent.
Then Daniel turned another page.
His expression changed.
“What is it?””
He handed me the notebook.
There was a photograph taped inside.
A photograph of Ava.
Taken when she was a baby.
But we had never seen it before.
On the back was a date.
The day she was born.
May you like
And underneath it was a message.
*They already know she exists.*
