Chapter 2: The Phone in Ava’s Backpack

Nobody moved.

The music from the patio speaker kept playing, but it suddenly sounded far away.

All I could hear was Ava’s breathing against my shoulder.

Fast.

Scared.

Broken.

I looked at Daniel.

The man I had trusted for eight years.

The man who had promised me when we got married that he would always protect our family.

“Daniel,” I said slowly.

“Tell me what she means.””

His eyes moved from me to Ava.

Then to his mother.

Margaret immediately stepped forward.

“She’s confused.””

Ava flinched.

“No,” my daughter whispered.

Margaret’s face hardened.

“Ava, don’t lie.””

I felt my entire body tense.

“Don’t talk to her like that,” I said.

Daniel finally spoke.

“Mom, just stop.””

But that wasn’t the answer I needed.

I stepped closer.

“Did you know about this?””

Daniel looked away.

That single movement told me more than words could.

My chest tightened.

“You knew?””

“No,” he said quickly.

But his voice was too fast.

Too defensive.

Margaret crossed her arms.

“This is exactly why she shouldn’t be raising the girl.””

I stared at her.

“The girl?””

I repeated the words.

“She has a name.””

Margaret rolled her eyes.

“She needs discipline.””

“She needs love,” I answered.

Ava suddenly moved in my arms.

“Mommy…”

I looked down.

She was shaking.

“What happened, baby?””

Her eyes filled with tears again.

“I didn’t want to tell you.””

“Tell me what?””

She looked toward Daniel.

Then she reached for her small pink backpack sitting near the patio chair.

My heart started pounding.

She walked over slowly and pulled out something wrapped inside a small blanket.

An old phone.

Daniel’s old phone.

I recognized it immediately.

It had been missing from his desk drawer for months.

“Ava,” Daniel said.

His voice changed.

Not angry.

Afraid.

“Give me that.””

My daughter stepped back.

“No.””

Everyone stared.

Daniel moved forward.

“Ava, sweetheart, that’s not a toy.””

“I know.””

Her tiny fingers held the phone tightly.

“I saved it.””

Margaret’s expression changed.

“What did you save?””

Ava looked at me.

Then she pressed the screen.

A recording began playing.

At first, there was only static.

Then voices.

Margaret’s voice.

Clear.

Cold.

My stomach twisted.

“Daniel, you need to make a decision.””

The backyard went silent.

Then Daniel’s voice came through the phone.

“What are you talking about?””

Margaret answered.

“Your wife refuses to understand what this family needs.””

My hands started shaking.

Ava looked at me.

“I heard them.””

The recording continued.

Margaret’s voice became louder.

“You know people will notice. You know she doesn’t look like us.””

A painful silence followed.

Then Daniel said something.

Something that made everyone turn toward him.

I couldn’t breathe.

I looked at my husband.

“Daniel…”

He stepped forward.

“Ava, give me the phone.””

But this time his voice wasn’t gentle.

It was desperate.

My daughter held the phone closer to her chest.

“No, Daddy.””

Margaret suddenly shouted.

“She stole that!””

Ava jumped.

I immediately stepped between them.

“Nobody comes near her.””

Daniel stared at the phone.

His face was pale.

Because he knew exactly what was on it.

He knew what we were about to hear.

And then the recording continued.

Daniel’s own voice came from the speaker.

“I don’t know if I can keep defending this forever.””

My heart shattered.

I looked at him.

“Defending what?””

The recording played one more sentence.

And the moment I heard it, I realized my husband had not been protecting me.

May you like

He had been protecting a secret.

A secret that could destroy our family.
