Chapter 6: The Price of Betrayal
For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything except the ticking clock above the kitchen doorway.
I looked at Daniel.
“Did you pay Marcus to interfere with my father's military records?””
He shook his head.
“It's not what it sounds like.””
Patricia laughed.
“Oh, now you're innocent?””
Daniel turned toward her.
“Mom, you said Marcus could fix everything!””
“He said he could!””
My voice cut through their argument.
“Stop talking about me as if I'm not standing here.””
Both of them fell silent.
I picked up the bank statement.
The transfer was dated six weeks earlier.
$250,000.
The recipient was Reed Capital Holdings.
“Daniel, where did that money come from?””
He rubbed his face.
“The company account.””
“Was it company money?””
“Yes.””
“Did you tell the other shareholders?””
He didn't answer.
Detective Miller wrote something in his notebook.
“Mr. Williams, you should be very careful about making statements regarding financial transactions. This may involve allegations beyond the incident yesterday.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Are you arresting me?””
“I'm not here to make that decision. I'm documenting what has been reported.””
Patricia pointed toward me.
“This is all her fault! If she'd agreed to help us, none of this would have happened!””
I stared at her.
“You mean if I'd agreed to let you take my inheritance?””
“You're married to my son!””
“And that doesn't make my father's money yours!””
Patricia slammed her handbag onto the table.
“Your father has millions in assets. You live in a house your husband provided. You drive a car he pays for. Yet you act like you're some independent queen!””
I slowly removed my wedding ring.
Daniel's eyes widened.
“Sarah?””
I placed it beside the bank statement.
“I don't want another conversation about what I owe this family.””
He stepped closer.
“Don't do this.””
“Then tell me the truth.””
“I told you everything.””
“No. You told me what your mother wanted you to tell me.””
His face tightened.
“Sarah, I made mistakes.””
“You watched her slap me.””
He looked down.
“You watched her drag me across the floor.””
His eyes filled with tears.
“I know.””
“You told me to apologize.””
“I was trying to calm her down.””
“No, Daniel. You were trying to protect yourself.””
He reached for my hand.
I pulled away.
“Don't.””
Patricia shook her head.
“Unbelievable. Three years of marriage, and she's throwing everything away over a misunderstanding.””
Detective Miller stepped toward the front door.
“Mrs. Williams, I need you to understand that the alleged assault and the suspected document fraud are being taken seriously. You should not contact Sarah to intimidate her or interfere with any evidence.””
Patricia laughed.
“Are you threatening me?””
“I'm explaining the situation.””
Before she could answer, my phone rang.
It was my father.
I answered.
“Dad?””
“Sweetheart, where are you?””
“At the house with James.””
“Good. I need you to come to my office. Elizabeth has received something important.””
“What happened?””
A brief pause.
“An official inquiry has been opened into the attempted access to your trust documents.””
I looked at Daniel.
He had gone completely still.
Dad continued.
“And there's something else. The name Marcus Reed appeared in a sealed report connected to my old unit.””
My stomach tightened.
“What kind of report?””
“I'll explain when you arrive.””
Twenty-five minutes later, I was sitting in my father's office.
Elizabeth stood beside a large conference table.
A thick envelope lay in front of her.
Dad entered wearing civilian clothes.
He looked older than he had the previous evening.
“Sarah, sit down.””
I sat.
He opened the envelope.
Inside were several pages bearing official markings and an old photograph.
Three men stood together outside a military facility.
My father was in the center.
Marcus Reed stood on his left.
The third man was unfamiliar to me.
“Do you remember the name Thomas Keller?”” Dad asked.
I shook my head.
“He was a civilian contractor who worked with our unit,” Dad explained.
“Fifteen years ago, sensitive information was leaked during an operation. We lost contact with several personnel because someone provided details to an outside party.””
He pointed at Marcus.
“Reed was suspected of sharing information.””
Then he pointed at the third man.
“Keller was suspected of arranging the payments.””
Elizabeth placed another document on the table.
“Colonel Williams, this is the information we received from the financial institution.””
It showed a recent transfer from Reed Capital Holdings.
The recipient account belonged to Thomas Keller.
Dad stared at it.
“Where did this come from?””
“An account linked to the company that received the $250,000 transfer.””
I looked at the photograph again.
“Why would these men care about my father's trust?””
Dad took a deep breath.
“Because the trust contains more than money.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
He turned to the final page.
Years earlier, he'd established a private charitable foundation using a portion of his personal assets. The foundation supported military families and maintained a restricted fund for educational scholarships.
The documents in my possession included information about its governance and certain protected financial records.
“Someone wanted access to the foundation's accounts?”” I asked.
Dad nodded.
“Possibly. But there's another reason Marcus may be interested.””
He removed a final sheet.
It contained a list of names connected to the old investigation.
One name had been circled in red.
*ROBERT WILLIAMS.*
I looked up.
“Dad, why is your name circled?””
His jaw tightened.
“Because someone has been trying to reopen that investigation using fabricated evidence.””
Elizabeth added quietly, “And the documents taken from Sarah's personal records may have been intended to create the appearance that the Colonel used his family trust to conceal unauthorized payments.””
I couldn't speak.
My father had spent thirty years serving his country.
Now someone was attempting to destroy his reputation by dragging me into a financial scheme.
Dad folded his hands.
“Sarah, I need you to understand something. This is no longer just about a necklace or a property dispute.””
“I understand.””
“No, sweetheart. You need to be careful. Marcus knows how to manipulate people. And he has already convinced your husband and mother-in-law to participate.””
My phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
I opened the message.
There was a photograph of Daniel standing outside a downtown Atlanta hotel.
Beside him was Marcus Reed.
The timestamp showed that the picture had been taken that morning.
Beneath it were seven words.
Your husband has already made another deal.
I looked at Dad.
He read the message.
Then another text arrived.
Ask him what he promised us in exchange for your father's original envelope.
My fingers went numb.
Because the envelope was still inside the safe in my bedroom.
And Daniel knew the combination.
I slowly raised my eyes toward my father.
“Dad, I think someone is going back to the house.””
His phone rang.
Detective Miller.
He answered immediately.
“James?””
The detective's voice was urgent.
“Colonel, we've got a problem. The security system just detected someone entering your daughter's bedroom.””
Dad stood.
“Who?””
Miller paused.
May you like
Then he said:
“Your son-in-law.””
