Chapter 2: The Camera Nobody Remembered

“Colonel Williams, I assume you've come to hear your daughter's ridiculous story.””

Patricia's voice was suddenly sweet.

Too sweet.

My father didn't respond immediately.

He took off his uniform cap and placed it carefully on the entryway table.

Then he looked at my cheek again.

“Sarah, did you receive medical attention?””

“No, Dad.””

“Did anyone call the police?””

I shook my head.

Patricia interrupted.

“Why would we call the police? We caught her stealing. This is a family matter.””

The man beside my father finally spoke.

“Ma'am, theft and assault don't become family matters because relatives are involved.””

Patricia frowned.

“And who are you?””

“James Miller. Retired police detective.””

Her eyes moved toward Daniel.

“Why did you bring a detective into my son's house?””

My father answered.

“Because my daughter called me after being physically assaulted.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Sir, please don't exaggerate. Mom was upset. Sarah was being difficult, and things got out of hand.””

Dad turned slowly.

“Your mother pulled your wife's hair and struck her in front of twelve witnesses. Which part of that sounds like a misunderstanding?””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“That's between my wife and me.””

“No,” Dad replied.

“It stopped being between you two when you allowed someone to assault her.””

Patricia scoffed.

“Your daughter stole my diamond necklace. I have proof.””

She held the necklace up again.

Detective Miller glanced at it.

“Where exactly did you find that?””

“In her handbag.””

“Who searched the handbag?””

“I did.””

“Did you touch it before finding the necklace?””

Patricia hesitated.

“I picked up her bag.””

“And where was the bag before that?””

“On the couch.””

Miller nodded slowly.

“Interesting.””

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“Why are we interrogating Mom? Sarah was the one who had the necklace!””

My father looked at her.

“Did you personally see Sarah take it?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

“No, but—”

“Then you saw nothing.””

Patricia slammed the necklace onto the coffee table.

“This is absurd! I want her out of my son's house tonight.””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Maybe everyone should calm down.””

Dad didn't even look at him.

Instead, he turned toward the ceiling.

A small black security camera was mounted above the living room entrance.

“Daniel, does that camera record continuously?””

Daniel glanced upward.

“Yes. It's connected to the house security system.””

Patricia immediately interrupted.

“That camera hasn't worked properly in weeks!””

I looked at her.

“How would you know?””

She stiffened.

“I live here often enough to know.””

Detective Miller approached the wall-mounted security monitor.

“May I see the recordings?””

Daniel hesitated.

“I'm not sure that's necessary.””

My father looked directly at him.

“Your wife has been accused of theft. If the camera works, the recording can establish what happened. Why would you object?””

Daniel looked toward his mother.

That single glance told me more than any explanation could have.

Finally, he entered the security password.

The screen displayed several recordings from earlier that afternoon.

Miller selected the living room camera.

“Let's start ten minutes before the accusation.””

The footage appeared.

At 4:17 p.m., Patricia entered the living room.

She looked toward the kitchen.

Then toward the staircase.

She walked directly to the couch where my handbag had been sitting.

My stomach tightened.

On the screen, Patricia picked up my handbag, opened the zipper, and looked inside.

Then she glanced over her shoulder.

She reached into the pocket of her cardigan.

A small object flashed beneath the living room lights.

The necklace.

She slipped it into my handbag.

Nobody spoke.

The recording continued.

Patricia closed the zipper, returned the handbag to exactly the same spot, and walked away.

I felt my knees weaken.

“Oh, my God,” I whispered.

Daniel moved closer to the monitor.

“Mom?””

Patricia grabbed his arm.

“Don't believe what you're seeing! That footage is edited!””

Miller paused the video.

“It's a continuous recording from the security system. We'll preserve the original file and verify its metadata.””

Patricia shook her head.

“She must have stolen it earlier! I was just putting it somewhere safe!””

I stared at her.

“You put it in my bag.””

“Shut up!””

My father stepped between us.

“Don't speak to my daughter that way.””

Miller resumed the recording.

At 4:19 p.m., Patricia pulled out her phone and made a call.

The camera had no audio, but the security system had synchronized audio from the nearby living room microphone.

Her voice filled the room.

“Everything's ready. Once Daniel throws Sarah out, we can finally get access to the documents her father gave her.””

My blood turned cold.

A man's voice answered.

“Make sure Sarah leaves without her handbag. The military retirement documents are inside.””

My father went completely still.

Daniel stared at his mother.

“What documents?””

Patricia reached for the monitor.

“Turn that off!””

Miller moved the screen out of her reach.

“Don't touch the equipment.””

The recording continued.

Patricia lowered her voice.

“Don't worry. Daniel will do what I tell him. He always does.””

Daniel's face drained of color.

I looked at my husband.

“You knew about this?””

“No,” he said quickly.

Patricia grabbed his sleeve.

“Daniel, listen to me. She's manipulating everything!””

My father finally spoke.

“Detective Miller, rewind the recording.””

Miller did.

“Which part?””

“The moment that man's voice appears.””

He replayed it.

My father closed his eyes briefly.

Then he whispered something I couldn't understand.

Miller leaned closer to the screen.

“Colonel, look at the reflection in the glass cabinet.””

The recording zoomed in.

Behind Patricia, a man entered through the side hallway.

His face appeared in the reflection for barely three seconds.

But it was enough.

My father gripped the edge of the table.

“Impossible.””

I had never seen my father look frightened before.

“Dad?”” I whispered.

He stared at the screen.

Then he turned toward Detective Miller.

“James, that's not just some stranger.””

“Who is he?””

My father swallowed.

“That's Lieutenant Colonel Marcus Reed.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

Dad looked at me.

“The man who was investigated fifteen years ago for betraying my military unit.””

And then the security monitor displayed another recording.

One showing Marcus Reed entering our house three days earlier.

Carrying a key.

A key that Daniel had told me nobody else possessed.
