Chapter 5: The Signature That Wasn't Mine
The following morning, I sat in a private consultation room at an Atlanta law office.
My cheek was still swollen.
My scalp hurt whenever I moved my head.
But the worst pain came from remembering Daniel's face when he'd admitted that he'd known about the loan.
He had known.
He'd watched his mother humiliate me while knowing that my name might already be attached to an $800,000 debt.
My father's attorney, Elizabeth Carter, placed a folder on the table.
“Sarah, I've reviewed the documents your father provided. We need to separate three issues: the assault, the suspected forgery, and the property transaction.””
I nodded.
“Can they really put that debt on me?””
“Not simply because your name appears on a document. But we need to establish exactly what was submitted, who submitted it, and whether anyone relied on a forged signature.””
Dad sat beside me.
“Elizabeth, what about the trust?””
She opened another folder.
“Your father's original documents appear to establish a separate financial arrangement. We need to review its governing terms and determine whether anyone attempted to access it improperly.””
I looked at Dad.
“Why didn't you tell me everything was connected?””
He sighed.
“Because I wanted you to have a normal life, sweetheart. I never wanted money or my military career to become the center of your marriage.””
I squeezed his hand.
“I know.””
He looked at me carefully.
“But I should have explained more.””
Elizabeth interrupted gently.
“Before we make assumptions, I want Sarah to tell me everything she remembers about the documents and her identification.””
I described Patricia's request for my driver's license photograph.
Then I remembered another detail.
Three weeks before the necklace incident, Daniel had asked me to sign several papers.
He'd placed them beside my breakfast plate.
He said they were routine documents related to refinancing the house.
I had asked to read them.
He told me there was nothing important and that his mother was handling everything.
I refused to sign.
Elizabeth stopped writing.
“You refused?””
“Yes.””
“Did you keep the papers?””
“I thought Daniel took them back to his office.””
Dad leaned forward.
“Did you photograph them?””
I shook my head.
Elizabeth made a note.
“That could be important. We need the original loan file and the lender's records.””
My phone vibrated.
A message from Daniel.
Please come home. We need to talk without your father interfering.
I showed it to Elizabeth.
She looked at me.
“You don't have to respond immediately.””
But I wanted answers.
I typed:
I'll meet you at the house. Elizabeth knows where I'm going.
Dad frowned.
“Are you sure?””
“I won't be alone.””
He nodded.
“James will accompany you.””
Two hours later, I returned to the house with Detective Miller.
Daniel was waiting at the dining table.
There were two cups of coffee in front of him.
He looked like he hadn't slept.
“Sarah.””
I placed my handbag on a chair.
“What do you want?””
He stood.
“I want to fix this.””
“You can't fix it with coffee.””
He looked down.
“I'm sorry about what happened yesterday.””
“Which part?””
He frowned.
“What?””
“The part where your mother dragged me by my hair? The part where she slapped me? Or the part where you ordered me to kneel and apologize?””
He rubbed his forehead.
“All of it.””
“Did you know she planted the necklace?””
“No.””
“Did you know she was trying to obtain my father's documents?””
He hesitated.
“Not exactly.””
I laughed without humor.
“There's that phrase again.””
Daniel pulled out a chair.
“Please sit down.””
I remained standing.
He opened a drawer and removed a small envelope.
“I found this in Mom's room.””
Inside were photocopies of my identification, bank statements, and several pages from my father's trust agreement.
My stomach dropped.
“Where did she get these?””
“I don't know.””
“Daniel, stop lying.””
He looked at me.
“Marcus asked Mom for them. He said he could arrange a financial deal that would help my company.””
“And what did you get?””
He swallowed.
“A loan.””
“How much money?””
“Eight hundred thousand.””
“Where is it?””
He stared at the table.
“Most of it is gone.””
“Gone where?””
He didn't answer.
I pulled out the chair and sat down.
“Daniel, listen carefully. If my identity was used without permission, I need the truth.””
He finally looked at me.
“Marcus said the trust could be used as security.””
“Could it?””
“He told Mom it was possible.””
“Did you see the trust agreement?””
“Yes.””
“Did you read it?””
“No.””
I closed my eyes.
My husband had helped strangers access documents he'd never bothered to understand.
Then he said something that made me sit upright.
“Sarah, Mom didn't do this alone.””
I stared at him.
“What do you mean?””
“Vanessa helped prepare the paperwork.””
His sister.
The same woman who had smiled while Patricia slapped me.
“Why?””
“Because she's been working for Marcus.””
I felt sick.
Daniel continued.
“She handles some of the administrative work for his company. Mom said Vanessa was only helping with the loan.””
“Then why did she help plant the necklace?””
Daniel looked away.
“I don't know.””
A sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Patricia appeared in the doorway.
Her face was tight with anger.
“What are you doing here?””
I stood.
“Getting answers.””
She looked at the envelope.
Then at Daniel.
“You promised me you wouldn't show her those papers!””
Daniel stood too.
“Mom, you forged her signature!””
Patricia slapped the table.
“I did what I had to do!””
“For what?”” I demanded.
“For this family!””
“No. You did it for Marcus.””
Her expression changed.
She took one step toward me.
“Be careful, Sarah. You have no idea what you've gotten yourself into.””
Detective Miller moved between us.
“Ma'am, step back.””
Patricia glared at him.
Then she turned toward Daniel.
“Tell her about the money.””
Daniel went pale.
“What?””
“Tell her where it went.””
He shook his head.
“Mom, don't.””
Patricia smiled bitterly.
“Your husband didn't lose that money in business, Sarah.””
She reached into her handbag and pulled out a bank statement.
Then she placed it on the table.
“He transferred $250,000 to an account belonging to Marcus Reed.””
I stared at Daniel.
“Why?””
He looked like he might collapse.
May you like
And then Patricia delivered the final blow.
“Because Marcus promised Daniel that if he helped us obtain your father's documents, he would make sure the Colonel's old military investigation disappeared.””
