Chapter 10: The Voice Behind the Recording

Nobody moved.

The audio recording continued playing through my phone.

My mother's voice was unmistakable.

“Robert, if you're hearing this, it means they've found Sarah's documents. There's something I never told you about Thomas Keller…”

A brief crackling sound followed.

Then another voice interrupted.

“James, did you secure the original records?””

I recognized Detective Miller's voice.

My father slowly turned toward the man standing beside the dining table.

“James?””

Miller's expression changed.

For the first time since I'd met him, he looked genuinely uncomfortable.

“Colonel, let me explain.””

My father held up one hand.

“Don't move.””

Miller looked at me.

“Sarah, that recording is incomplete. You need to understand that.””

I clutched my phone.

“Why is your voice on my mother's recording?””

He swallowed.

“Your mother and I had several conversations years ago.””

“About what?””

“About the financial irregularities.””

Dad stepped closer.

“You told me you had never met my wife outside the official investigation.””

Miller lowered his eyes.

“I lied.””

The admission hit harder than I expected.

My father had trusted this man enough to bring him into our home.

He had stood beside me when Patricia assaulted me.

He had helped uncover the planted necklace.

And now his voice was coming from a recording my dead mother had left behind.

Dad's expression hardened.

“James, explain.””

Miller pulled out a chair.

“Eleven years ago, your wife contacted me privately. She believed someone had accessed the foundation's financial records. She had discovered transactions that didn't match the official reports.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because she asked me not to.””

Dad stared at him.

“She was my wife.””

“I know.””

“And you kept secrets from me?””

Miller rubbed his forehead.

“She believed someone close to you was involved. She was afraid that telling you would put you in danger.””

I looked at the recording.

“Then why does it sound like you were asking someone to secure the documents?””

Miller looked at me.

“Because I was working undercover with your mother.””

Dad went completely still.

“What?””

Miller opened his jacket and removed an old identification card.

“I wasn't a detective assigned to your family's case back then. I was working with a federal financial investigation team. Your wife contacted me after discovering suspicious transfers.””

“Then why did you retire from the police department?””

“Because the investigation was compromised. Someone leaked information, and several witnesses disappeared from the process.””

My father stared at him.

“Why didn't you tell me any of this when we met yesterday?””

Miller hesitated.

“Because I wasn't certain who was involved. I wanted to see who would react when the original documents appeared.””

I stepped backward.

“So you used me?””

“No, Sarah.””

“You let me believe you were simply my father's friend.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Everyone keeps saying that while lying to me!””

My voice broke.

Miller looked genuinely ashamed.

Then he reached into his jacket again.

This time, he produced a small sealed envelope.

“Your mother gave me this before she died. She instructed me to deliver it to you only if someone attempted to access the original trust documents.””

My father stared at the envelope.

“Eleven years, James?””

“I kept it because I promised her.””

I took it.

My name was written across the front in my mother's familiar handwriting.

I sat down slowly.

The paper trembled between my fingers.

Inside was a handwritten letter and a small photograph.

The letter began:

My sweet Sarah,

If you're reading this, someone has tried to use the documents your father gave you. I hope that never happens, but I need you to know something.

I swallowed and continued.

Your father has spent his life believing that loyalty means protecting the people standing beside him. But sometimes the person standing closest is the one hiding the knife.

My eyes filled.

Dad looked away.

I continued reading.

Thomas Keller was never the only person involved in the missing funds. Someone inside our own family helped him move the money. I discovered the truth, but I couldn't prove it before I became ill.

I stopped.

“Dad…”

He reached for my shoulder.

“Keep reading, sweetheart.””

The final paragraph contained a name.

I read it twice.

Then I looked up.

“Mom believed someone in the family was involved.””

Dad nodded slowly.

“Who?””

I turned the letter around.

The name was written in careful handwriting.

*Patricia Williams.*

My father closed his eyes.

Miller leaned forward.

“There's something else.””

He pointed to the photograph.

It showed my mother standing outside a small office building.

Beside her stood Patricia.

They were shaking hands.

On the back, my mother had written:

The day Patricia promised to return the missing money.

My blood ran cold.

Patricia hadn't simply become involved after my marriage.

She had been connected to the scheme long before Daniel and I met.

Then Miller's phone rang.

He checked the number.

His expression changed.

“Colonel, we have a problem.””

“What now?””

“Patricia has just contacted the authorities.””

“About what?””

Miller looked directly at me.

“She claims Sarah stole the original trust documents and threatened her family.””

I stared at him.

“She knows the envelope is missing?””

Miller nodded.

“And she's filed a formal complaint naming you as the person responsible for the missing foundation funds.””

Dad stood.

“Then we will provide the evidence.””

Miller shook his head.

“There's a complication.””

He showed us a message.

A warrant request had been submitted using documents bearing my signature.

And this time, the allegation wasn't theft.

It was financial fraud.
