Chapter 6: The Night Everything Changed

I hadn’t thought about that night in years.

Not because I forgot.

Because I tried.

Some memories don’t disappear.

They wait.

Six years earlier, before Daniel and I got married, I met Margaret alone at a restaurant.

I thought she wanted to understand me.

I was wrong.

She wanted to test me.

The restaurant was almost empty.

Rain tapped against the windows.

Margaret sat across from me, perfectly dressed, perfectly calm.

“I want to ask you something,” she said.

I smiled nervously.

“Okay.””

“Do you love my son?””

The question surprised me.

“Yes.””

She nodded.

“Then prove it.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

She placed a folder on the table.

Inside were documents.

Financial documents.

Medical records.

I looked confused.

“What is this?””

“Daniel doesn’t know everything about you.””

My heart started beating faster.

“What are you talking about?””

Margaret leaned closer.

“I know about your past.””

I felt the room become colder.

“You went through my private information?””

“I needed to know who my son was marrying.””

“That wasn’t your right.””

She smiled.

That same smile.

The one she wore when she believed she had power.

“You have something to hide.””

“I have a life before Daniel. Everyone does.””

She tapped the folder.

“Not everyone has secrets that could destroy a marriage.””

I remembered how scared I felt.

Not because I had done anything wrong.

Because she wanted me to believe I had.

“What do you want?””

Her answer was simple.

“Leave Daniel.””

I stared at her.

“No.””

That was the first time I ever stood up to Margaret.

She looked surprised.

Then angry.

“You don’t understand who you’re dealing with.””

I walked away.

And I never told Daniel.

I thought I was protecting him.

But now, six years later, my silence had become a weapon in Margaret’s hands.

When I finished telling Daniel everything, he sat quietly.

“I should have told you.””

I looked down.

“Yes.””

He nodded.

“I understand why you were scared.””

“But?””

“But I wish you trusted me enough.””

That hurt because he was right.

For years, we had both been protecting him from the truth.

Me.

His mother.

Everyone.

Except him.

Then my phone rang.

It was Rachel.

I answered immediately.

“Rachel?””

Her breathing was fast.

“You need to listen carefully.””

“What happened?””

“I found something else in the letters.””

Daniel moved closer.

“What?””

Rachel’s voice dropped.

“Margaret wasn’t just trying to break your marriage.””

I held my breath.

“What was she doing?””

A pause.

Then Rachel said:

“She was trying to get Daniel’s house.””

I looked around our home.

The walls.

The photos.

The life we built.

“What?””

Rachel continued.

“She wrote that once you were gone, Daniel would finally be free to make the right decision.””

Daniel’s face went pale.

“What decision?””

Rachel hesitated.

Then she answered:

“Marrying the woman your mother chose for him.””

At that exact moment, someone knocked on our front door.

Three slow knocks.

Daniel looked toward the entrance.

Nobody spoke.

Then a woman’s voice came from the other side.

“Daniel?””

His face changed.

Because he recognized it.

Margaret wasn’t alone.

She had brought someone with her.

May you like

And whoever was standing outside…

Was the person she had been planning this entire time.
