Chapter 4: The Threat Behind the Smile

Daniel stared at the message on his phone for so long that I thought he had stopped breathing.

The photograph of Lily holding my phone was still on the screen.

My daughter.

My little girl.

Someone had taken a picture of her.

Someone had been watching.

“Daniel,” I whispered.

“Where did she get that?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

His fingers tightened around the phone.

“I don’t know.””

Rachel leaned forward.

“Does your mother have cameras in your house?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Then I stopped.

A cold thought entered my mind.

“She stayed here last week.””

Daniel looked at me.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying she had plenty of time to put something there.””

The silence that followed felt heavier than anything else.

Because suddenly, this wasn’t just about a lie.

It wasn’t just about my bruises.

Margaret had been collecting information.

Watching.

Preparing.

Daniel stood up quickly.

“We’re going home.””

Rachel looked concerned.

“Are you sure that’s smart?””

“I need to check the house.””

I reached for his arm.

“Daniel, don’t go alone.””

He looked at me.

“I won’t.””

For the first time since the attack, I saw something different in his eyes.

Not doubt.

Not confusion.

Fear.

An hour later, we arrived home.

The house looked normal.

That was the worst part.

The flowers Margaret planted near the front door were still blooming.

Lily’s toys were still scattered across the living room.

The family photos on the wall still showed smiling faces.

A perfect picture.

A perfect lie.

Daniel checked every room.

Nothing.

No cameras.

No obvious signs.

Then Lily walked into the hallway.

“Daddy?””

Daniel immediately knelt down.

“Hey, sweetheart.””

She looked at him seriously.

“Is Grandma mad at Mommy?””

I felt my heart break.

Children noticed everything adults tried to hide.

Daniel looked at me.

Then back at Lily.

“Why do you ask that?””

Lily hugged her stuffed rabbit.

“Because Grandma told me Mommy was a bad person.””

My stomach dropped.

“When did she tell you that?””

Lily looked down.

“Before.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Before what?””

“Before she hurt Mommy.””

The room went silent.

I crouched beside my daughter.

“Lily, what else did Grandma say?””

She looked nervous.

“She said Daddy would believe her.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

That sentence hurt him.

Because it proved Margaret wasn’t acting in the moment.

She had planned everything.

A knock suddenly came from the front door.

All three of us froze.

Daniel moved in front of us.

“I’ll get it.””

He opened the door.

Two police officers stood outside.

My heart raced.

One officer held a notepad.

“Daniel Carter?””

“Yes.””

“We received a report of an assault.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“From who?””

The officer looked at his notes.

“Your mother.””

I felt my body go cold.

The second officer looked toward me.

“Ma’am, we need to ask you some questions.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“She assaulted my wife.””

The officer looked surprised.

“Your mother reported that your wife attacked her.””

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

She had done it again.

She had reached for the same weapon.

The victim story.

The officer continued.

“Mrs. Carter claims there has been ongoing violence in the home.””

I looked at Daniel.

The old version of him might have hesitated.

The old version might have asked if there was another explanation.

But this time, he didn’t.

“She’s lying.””

The officer glanced at him.

“Do you have proof?””

Daniel pulled out his phone.

“Yes.””

He showed the video.

The officers watched.

Their expressions changed.

When it ended, one of them quietly said:

“Mr. Carter, we need to speak with your mother.””

I thought that would finally be enough.

I thought the truth would force Margaret to stop.

I was wrong.

Because when the officer called her, she didn’t sound scared.

She sounded prepared.

And before she hung up, she said one sentence that made Daniel’s face turn pale.

“She’s not the only one with a secret.””
