Chapter 14: The Final Person Who Betrayed Us

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not because I was afraid of Margaret anymore.

Because I was afraid there were still pieces of the truth hidden from us.

The message kept replaying in my mind.

*You don’t know who helped her.*

And underneath it:

*Claire.*

The woman who claimed she was another victim.

The woman who brought us the documents.

The woman who helped expose Margaret.

Was she part of the plan all along?

Daniel sat beside me on the couch.

“She might have been forced.””

I looked at him.

“You believe that?””

He was quiet.

That told me everything.

“We need to know.””

The next morning, Claire agreed to meet.

She looked exhausted when she arrived.

She didn’t sit.

She just stood there.

“I know why you called.””

Daniel crossed his arms.

“Then explain.””

Claire closed her eyes.

“I was scared.””

“Of my mother?””

She nodded.

“She threatened me.””

I frowned.

“How?””

Claire reached into her bag.

She pulled out her phone.

“She had something on me.””

She showed us a message.

A threat.

Then another.

Then another.

Margaret had been controlling her too.

“I wanted to tell you sooner.””

Daniel looked angry.

“But you didn’t.””

Claire looked down.

“No.””

“Why?””

Her voice broke.

“Because I thought I could manage her.””

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because everyone who got close to Margaret thought they could control her.

Until they couldn’t.

Claire continued.

“She promised me that if I helped her, she would leave me alone.””

Daniel looked at the messages.

“What did she make you do?””

Claire hesitated.

Then she answered:

“I gave her information.””

My stomach dropped.

“What information?””

“About your marriage.””

Silence.

“She asked about your arguments. Your problems. Your private moments.””

Daniel looked away.

The betrayal hurt him.

Not because Claire mattered.

Because it proved how far Margaret had reached.

“How did you get into our lives?”” he asked.

Claire whispered:

“She contacted me two years ago.””

Two years.

Before the attack.

Before everything.

“She was already planning this?””

Claire nodded.

“She said you would eventually realize your wife was wrong for you.””

I looked at Daniel.

“She never stopped.””

“No,” Claire said.

“She didn’t.””

Then Claire handed us something.

A notebook.

“What is this?””

“Margaret’s.””

Daniel opened it.

Inside were dates.

Names.

Plans.

Not just about us.

Other people.

Other families.

Other relationships.

I flipped through the pages.

There were years of manipulation.

Friends.

Relatives.

Neighbors.

Everyone was a piece on her board.

Then Daniel stopped.

He found a page near the back.

His face changed.

“What?””

He handed it to me.

My name was written there.

Below it:

*Final obstacle.*

Under that:

*Remove wife. Secure granddaughter. Restore family order.*

I felt sick.

But then Daniel saw something else.

A note written in the corner.

A date.

Tomorrow.

“What happens tomorrow?”” I asked.

Nobody answered.

Then Claire whispered:

“The final hearing.””

The day when custody would be decided.

Margaret wasn’t planning to win emotionally.

She was planning something else.

Daniel called our attorney immediately.

When he arrived, he reviewed the notebook.

“This is the strongest evidence yet.””

“Will it be enough?””

He looked serious.

“It should be.””

Should.

Not would.

That word stayed with me.

Because people like Margaret survived by creating doubt.

The next morning, we walked into court again.

Margaret was already there.

She looked confident.

Too confident.

As we sat down, she leaned toward her attorney.

Then she smiled.

Not at him.

At us.

I knew that smile.

It meant she had something planned.

The judge entered.

Everyone stood.

The final hearing began.

And before our attorney could present the notebook, Margaret’s attorney stood.

“Your Honor, we have new evidence.””

My heart dropped.

The attorney placed a file on the table.

“I believe this changes everything.””

The judge opened it.

Then looked directly at me.

And the expression on her face made my blood run cold.

May you like

Because whatever was inside that file…

Was something Margaret believed could finally destroy me.
