Chapter 2: The Video She Never Expected

Daniel didn’t move.

Nobody moved.

The kitchen felt smaller than it had ever felt before.

My daughter stood in the middle of the room holding the one thing that could prove I wasn’t lying.

My phone.

I looked at Lily.

I had no idea when she picked it up.

I had no idea she understood what was happening.

She was only three years old.

But somehow, my little girl had become the person standing between me and a lie that could have destroyed my life.

“Lily,” Daniel said softly, “what do you mean you recorded Grandma?””

Lily looked at Margaret.

Then she looked at me.

“She was hurting Mommy.””

Margaret immediately shook her head.

“No, sweetheart. Mommy is confused.””

I felt rage rise inside me.

Even then.

Even after everything.

She was trying to use my daughter.

Daniel reached for the phone.

“Can I see it?””

Lily handed it to him.

Margaret suddenly stood up.

“Daniel, you don’t need to watch that.””

The speed of her reaction told him everything.

His eyes moved toward her.

“Why?””

She froze.

“I just think this is unnecessary.””

“You said she attacked you.””

“She did.””

“Then why don’t you want me to see what happened?””

Margaret looked away.

That was the first crack.

Daniel pressed play.

The sound filled the kitchen.

At first, there was only the noise of me cleaning.

Then Margaret’s voice.

“You’re still cleaning that?””

Daniel’s expression changed.

He listened.

Every word.

Every insult.

Every second.

Then came the sound of the mop hitting my leg.

My husband’s face went pale.

The recording continued.

My scream.

Margaret’s voice.

“Maybe pain will make you move faster.””

Daniel stopped breathing for a moment.

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel looked at his mother.

“Mom.””

Just one word.

But I had never heard him say it like that before.

Margaret stepped forward.

“Daniel, you don’t understand.””

“No,” he said.

“I understand exactly.””

She shook her head.

“She provoked me.””

I stared at her.

“Provoked you?””

My voice cracked.

“You beat me because Lily spilled juice?””

Margaret’s jaw tightened.

“You always make yourself the victim.””

Daniel looked at me.

The guilt on his face hurt almost as much as my injuries.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

I wanted to accept those words.

I wanted them to fix everything.

But apologies couldn’t erase the moment he looked at me and believed her.

“Why did you believe her?”” I asked.

Daniel looked down.

“I don’t know.””

“Yes, you do.””

He didn’t answer.

Because we both knew.

Margaret had spent months creating a story.

Small comments.

Small accusations.

Small moments where she made me seem difficult.

And Daniel had ignored them because it was easier than confronting his mother.

Margaret wiped her face.

“You’re really going to choose her over your own mother?””

Daniel turned toward her.

“This isn’t about choosing sides.””

“It is.””

“No, Mom. This is about you hurting my wife.””

She laughed bitterly.

“Your wife has changed you.””

“No,” he said.

“You did this yourself.””

The room went silent.

Then Margaret grabbed her purse.

“I can’t believe my own son would treat me like this.””

She walked toward the door.

But before leaving, she stopped beside Daniel.

Her voice became cold.

“You’ll regret this.””

The door slammed.

I expected to feel relief.

Instead, I felt empty.

Because even though the truth was finally visible, something between Daniel and me had broken.

That night, I sat on the edge of our bed while Daniel cleaned the bruises on my legs.

Neither of us spoke for several minutes.

Finally, he said, “I should have protected you.””

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

He swallowed.

“I kept telling myself Mom was just difficult. That she didn’t mean anything by it.””

“And she knew that.””

He looked at me.

“What?””

“She knew you would explain everything away.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

That hurt him because it was true.

A few minutes later, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

But then Daniel noticed the screen.

“Who is it?””

I answered.

A woman’s voice spoke immediately.

“Are you Daniel’s wife?””

I sat up.

“Yes. Who is this?””

There was a pause.

Then the woman whispered:

“I’m calling because Margaret has done this before.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“What do you mean?””

The woman took a shaky breath.

“She lied about someone else too.””

Daniel looked at me.

I put the call on speaker.

The woman continued.

“She didn’t just hurt you. She destroyed another person’s life.””

I felt a chill move through me.

“Who?””

The woman hesitated.

Then she said a name.

May you like

A name that made Daniel’s face change.

“Her first daughter-in-law.””
