Chapter 12: The Missing Minutes
The edited recording was played in our attorney’s office.
I hated hearing my own voice.
I hated hearing the pain.
The argument happened six months earlier.
Daniel and I had been exhausted.
Bills.
Work.
Stress.
Margaret constantly interfering.
Everything had built up.
In the recording, my voice sounded broken.
“I don’t know if I can do this anymore.””
Daniel’s voice followed.
“Maybe we need time apart.””
Hearing those words again hurt.
Even though I knew what happened next.
Because the recording stopped there.
The silence after those words felt like a weapon.
Margaret had removed the part where Daniel apologized.
Where we talked.
Where we decided to fight for our family.
She had taken a painful moment and frozen it forever.
“She’s making it look like we were falling apart,” Daniel said.
Our attorney nodded.
“Exactly.””
“So how do we prove it?””
He opened another file.
“By finding the original.””
I looked confused.
“Where?””
“The device.””
Daniel stared.
“The camera?””
“Yes.””
“The one from the house?””
“Yes.””
The attorney explained that deleted or edited files often leave traces.
“If we can recover the original recording, we can prove manipulation.””
For the first time in days, I felt hope.
But it didn’t last long.
Because that evening, something happened.
Lily disappeared.
Not forever.
Not for hours.
But long enough to make me feel like my heart stopped.
I was folding laundry when I realized the house was too quiet.
“Lily?””
No answer.
I checked her room.
Empty.
The backyard.
Empty.
My hands started shaking.
“Daniel!””
He ran upstairs.
“What happened?””
“She’s gone.””
The panic on his face matched mine.
We searched everywhere.
Then we heard a small sound.
The garage door.
Daniel ran.
And there she was.
Standing beside the door.
Holding her stuffed rabbit.
But she wasn’t alone.
Margaret was standing outside.
My blood froze.
“Get away from my daughter.””
Margaret looked offended.
“I was just saying goodbye.””
Daniel stepped between them.
“You came onto our property?””
“I’m her grandmother.””
“No.””
His voice was cold.
“You’re someone who ignored boundaries.””
Lily ran to me.
I hugged her tightly.
Then I noticed something.
She was holding a small flash drive.
“Mommy?””
I looked down.
“Where did you get this?””
Lily pointed at Margaret.
“Grandma dropped it.””
Margaret’s face changed.
Only for a second.
But enough.
Daniel picked it up.
“What is this?””
Margaret didn’t answer.
The confidence disappeared.
Our attorney’s words echoed in my mind.
Find the original.
Daniel looked at me.
Then at the flash drive.
Slowly, he handed it to me.
I knew.
Whatever was inside that tiny piece of plastic…
Could finally end everything.
But when we opened the files, there was one recording.
One video.

And the first thing we heard was Margaret’s voice saying:
“Once Daniel believes his wife is unstable, Lily will be mine.””
