Chapter 9: The Battle for My Son

The first thing I did was call Daniel back.

The second thing I did was hold Frederick.

I didn’t care that he was sleeping.

I picked him up and held him against my chest.

My son.

My reason.

My family.

Amy stood beside me, terrified.

“Connor, what did he mean?””

I looked at her.

“My mother filed for guardianship.””

Her face went pale.

“Of Frederick?””

I nodded.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Amy whispered:

“She wants our baby.””

I hated hearing the fear in her voice.

Because I knew exactly where it came from.

My mother had spent months training Amy to feel powerless.

But now she had chosen the wrong person to fight.

I called Daniel.

“Tell me everything.””

He explained that Teresa had submitted documents claiming she was concerned about our parenting.

“She says you’re overwhelmed,” Daniel said.

“That’s ridiculous.””

“Yes.””

“And Amy?””

“She claims Amy is emotionally unstable.””

I looked at my wife.

The woman who had sacrificed everything for our son.

The woman who apologized when she was mistreated.

“Can she do this?””

“Anyone can file.””

My stomach tightened.

“But winning is another matter.””

“What evidence does she have?””

Daniel paused.

“That’s the problem.””

“What?””

“She created evidence.””

I felt cold.

“What do you mean?””

“She has photographs.””

“Of what?””

“Your house.””

I frowned.

“What about it?””

“She photographed normal things and presented them as neglect.””

I looked around.

The toys on the floor.

The laundry basket.

The dishes from breakfast.

Normal family life.

My mother had turned it into ammunition.

“She planned this.””

“Yes.””

That night, I barely slept.

Amy stayed awake too.

Around midnight, she spoke quietly.

“I’m scared.””

I turned toward her.

“Of what?””

“She’s powerful.””

I reached for her hand.

“She’s not.””

“She convinced everyone today.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I looked at our sleeping son.

“She convinced people because I helped her.””

Amy looked at me.

“What do you mean?””

“I spent years believing her without asking questions.””

I squeezed her hand.

“That ends now.””

The next morning, Daniel came to our house.

He brought copies of the documents Teresa filed.

Reading them felt like watching someone rewrite my life.

Every accusation was carefully designed.

Connor is emotionally unstable.

Amy refuses family support.

The child is isolated from relatives.

I laughed when I saw that one.

“Isolated?””

Daniel looked at me.

“She’s building a case around the fact that you stopped allowing her unlimited access.””

Amy covered her mouth.

“She’s making boundaries look like abuse.””

Exactly.

That was her plan.

She wasn’t proving we were bad parents.

She was punishing us for saying no.

Then Daniel handed me another document.

“This came from the court file.””

I looked at it.

A witness list.

My mother had listed family members.

Aunts.

Uncles.

Cousins.

Everyone from the birthday party.

Everyone who laughed while Amy worked.

I felt betrayed all over again.

Then I saw one name.

Mason.

I stared.

“Mason is on the list?””

Daniel nodded.

I immediately called him.

He answered after several rings.

“Connor.””

“Are you supporting her?””

Silence.

“Mason.””

“No.””

“Then why are you listed as a witness?””

Another pause.

“Because your mother put me there.””

“Did you agree?””

“No.””

“Then help me understand.””

His voice cracked.

“I was scared.””

I closed my eyes.

“Of her?””

“Yes.””

That answer surprised me.

“What?””

Mason exhaled.

“Connor, you think she only controls you?””

I said nothing.

“She controls everyone.””

Later that day, Mason came over.

He brought a box.

“I took this from her office.””

I looked inside.

Folders.

Receipts.

Documents.

“What is this?””

“Proof.””

We spread everything across the table.

Bank transfers.

Fake contracts.

Messages.

Then Amy found something.

A printed email.

She read it quietly.

Then looked at me.

“Connor.””

“What?””

She handed it over.

The email was from my mother.

To Victoria.

The subject line:

*Final Step Before Connor Loses Control.*

My hands went numb.

I read the message.

*Once the guardianship is approved, he will have no choice. The house and accounts will finally be protected.*

Protected.

That word again.

My mother’s favorite excuse.

But then I reached the final sentence.

And suddenly, everything made sense.

*After Connor is declared incapable, I can legally manage all assets connected to him.*

I stared at the page.

She wasn’t just trying to take my house.

She wasn’t just trying to take my son.

She was trying to prove I was incapable so she could take everything.

The room went silent.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

I opened it.

One photo.

My mother standing outside the courthouse.

And beside her was a person I never expected to see.

Victoria.

The message underneath said:

*They have a witness who can destroy your case.*

I looked at the photo again.

Then I saw who was standing behind them.

My heart stopped.

Because the person my mother brought to court was someone who knew me better than anyone.

Someone who could make everyone believe her story.

My own father’s lawyer.
