Chapter 8: The Aunt My Mother Erased

I stood in the kitchen, unable to speak.

The woman on the phone sounded like she was crying.

“Who are you?””

She took a shaky breath.

“My name is Evelyn Hayes.””

I gripped the counter.

“My father’s sister?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Amy.

She was watching me carefully.

“How did you get my number?””

“Your attorney contacted someone who knew where to find me.””

I frowned.

“Why didn’t you contact me before?””

The silence that followed told me everything.

“Evelyn?””

Her voice cracked.

“Because your mother made sure I couldn’t.””

I closed my eyes.

Another secret.

Another lie.

“How?””

“She told me you wanted nothing to do with me.””

I felt anger rising.

“She said that?””

“Yes.””

“She told me you abandoned the family.””

Evelyn became quiet.

“I never abandoned you, Connor.””

I didn’t know what to say.

For years, I had believed I was alone.

My father was gone.

His family was gone.

My mother was the only person who stayed.

Now I was discovering that the person I trusted had been the reason I lost everyone else.

“Can we meet?””

Evelyn answered immediately.

“Yes.””

We agreed to meet at a small coffee shop downtown.

Amy came with me.

She squeezed my hand before we walked inside.

“You don’t have to do this alone.””

I looked at her.

After everything, after all the ways my mother tried to separate us, Amy was still standing beside me.

“I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

“For not seeing it sooner.””

She shook her head.

“Just don’t let her make you doubt yourself anymore.””

Inside the coffee shop, an older woman stood near the window.

The moment she saw me, she covered her mouth.

“Oh my God.””

I stopped.

She looked so much like my father.

Same eyes.

Same expression.

For a second, I felt like I was looking at a piece of my childhood.

“Connor?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

She walked toward me slowly.

“I’ve wanted to meet you for so long.””

We sat together for nearly two hours.

And every answer created another question.

Evelyn explained that after my father died, she discovered Teresa had been changing documents.

“She told everyone Michael left debts,” Evelyn said.

“But he didn’t.””

“No.””

“He had assets?””

“Yes.””

I looked down.

“The house.””

She nodded.

“The house was meant to be your beginning.””

I laughed sadly.

“Instead, my mother used it as a weapon.””

Evelyn looked heartbroken.

“She was always afraid of losing control.””

“You knew her?””

“We were close before your father died.””

I looked up.

“Then what happened?””

Evelyn stared into her coffee.

“Your father found out Teresa was hiding money.””

My chest tightened.

“What money?””

“Money from his business.””

I froze.

“My father had a business?””

“Yes.””

“Mom said he failed.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“Your mother said many things.””

Amy looked at her.

“Why would Teresa lie about everything?””

Evelyn looked toward the window.

“Because Michael was planning to leave her.””

The words hit me.

“Divorce?””

“Yes.””

“Before he died?””

She nodded.

“He discovered she had been moving money into accounts he didn’t know about.””

I felt sick.

“Then why did he stay?””

“He didn’t.””

Evelyn reached into her bag.

She pulled out an envelope.

“He left this for you.””

My hands froze.

“What is it?””

“Your father wrote it before he died.””

I stared at the envelope.

My name was written on the front.

Connor.

A name written by a man whose voice I barely remembered.

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a single letter.

My hands trembled as I read the first line.

*My son, if you are reading this, your mother has probably told you a version of me that isn’t true.*

I stopped breathing.

Amy placed her hand over mine.

I kept reading.

*I need you to know something important. You were never abandoned.*

My eyes burned.

For years, I had carried the pain of believing my father left me.

And now, in my hands, was proof that he hadn’t.

The letter continued.

*Trust your instincts. If someone tells you they are protecting you while taking control from you, be careful.*

I looked up.

Evelyn watched me.

“What else does it say?””

I turned the page.

The next sentence made my blood run cold.

*The most dangerous thing your mother will ever do is not take your money.*

I swallowed.

“Connor?””

I read the final line.

*It is what she will do when she realizes you know the truth.*

At that exact moment, my phone started ringing.

It was Daniel.

I answered.

“Daniel?””

His voice was urgent.

“Connor, where are you?””

“At a coffee shop.””

“Leave.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

“I found something in your mother’s records.””

“What?””

A pause.

Then he said:

“She filed for emergency guardianship of your son.””

The world seemed to stop.

“What?””

“She’s claiming you’re unstable and that Amy is an unsafe parent.””

I stood up.

Amy looked at me.

“What happened?””

I looked at the letter in my hand.

At the warning my father had written decades ago.

Then I heard Daniel’s final words.

“Connor, your mother isn’t trying to take your house anymore.””

May you like

A cold feeling moved through me.

“She’s trying to take Frederick.””
