Chapter 10: The Man Who Knew My Father’s Secrets

The courthouse hallway felt colder than it should have.

I stood there staring at the photo on my phone.

My father’s lawyer.

A man I had never met.

A man my mother had somehow convinced to stand beside her.

Daniel looked over my shoulder.

His expression changed instantly.

“Who is that?””

I handed him the phone.

“His name is Robert Hale.””

Daniel studied the image.

“You know him?””

“No.””

“Your father’s attorney?””

“That’s what the message says.””

Daniel looked concerned.

“That could be a problem.””

I watched my mother enter the courtroom with Victoria beside her.

She looked confident.

Almost peaceful.

That was what frightened me.

My mother was not acting like someone who might lose.

She was acting like someone who already knew the ending.

Amy stood beside me, holding my hand.

“She looks happy.””

I nodded.

“She thinks she’s won.””

The courtroom doors opened.

We walked inside.

Teresa sat across from us.

For a second, we looked at each other.

I expected guilt.

Regret.

Something.

Instead, she smiled.

Not a warm smile.

A victorious one.

The hearing began with Teresa’s attorney presenting their argument.

They described my mother as a loving grandmother.

A concerned family member.

Someone who had “stepped in” because my wife and I were supposedly struggling.

Every lie sounded professional when spoken inside a courtroom.

“She has dedicated her life to protecting her family,” the attorney said.

I almost laughed.

Protecting.

That word again.

Then came the accusations.

Photos of our home appeared on a screen.

A pile of laundry.

A toy basket overflowing.

A sink with dishes.

Normal life.

Presented like evidence of failure.

Amy looked down.

I reached for her hand.

Then Teresa’s attorney spoke.

“Mrs. Hayes has concerns about the emotional stability of the child’s parents.””

The judge looked at Teresa.

“Mrs. Hayes, why do you believe your grandson is at risk?””

My mother stood.

Her voice softened.

“I don’t want to hurt my son.””

I almost closed my eyes.

I knew that voice.

The wounded mother voice.

The one that made everyone feel sorry for her.

“I love Connor more than anything,” she continued.

The judge watched her.

“But I believe he has been manipulated.””

My jaw tightened.

“By my wife?””

She looked at me sadly.

“Yes.””

Amy gasped quietly.

The judge looked between us.

“Mr. Hayes, you’ll have your chance to respond.””

Then Teresa’s attorney called their witness.

“Robert Hale.””

My heart sank.

An older man walked into the courtroom.

Gray hair.

Dark suit.

Calm expression.

He looked exactly like someone who had spent decades being trusted.

He took the stand.

“Mr. Hale,” Teresa’s attorney began, “how long did you know Michael Hayes?””

“Twenty-seven years.””

“And were you his attorney?””

“Yes.””

“Did you handle his estate?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Daniel.

He looked back at me.

Neither of us knew what was coming.

The attorney held up a document.

“Mr. Hale, can you explain the arrangement between Michael Hayes and his wife?””

Robert glanced at the papers.

Then he looked toward my mother.

Something about his expression bothered me.

Like he was uncomfortable.

“Mr. Hale?””

He cleared his throat.

“Michael Hayes had concerns about his wife’s financial decisions.””

My heart stopped.

Teresa looked down.

Like she already knew.

The attorney continued.

“Did Michael ever express concern about leaving assets directly to his son?””

Robert hesitated.

“Yes.””

The courtroom went quiet.

I felt Amy’s hand tighten around mine.

The attorney smiled.

“Why?””

Robert looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw sadness in his eyes.

“Because Michael believed someone might try to influence Connor.””

My mother immediately looked toward me.

A perfect setup.

The attorney turned.

“And who did Michael trust to protect Connor?””

Robert answered:

“Teresa.””

My stomach dropped.

The room filled with whispers.

My mother looked almost emotional.

I couldn’t believe it.

My father’s lawyer.

The person who was supposed to expose the truth.

Was helping her.

Daniel leaned toward me.

“Don’t react.””

But I couldn’t stop thinking.

What if this was real?

What if my father actually trusted her?

What if everything I discovered was wrong?

Then Robert continued.

“But that was not the entire agreement.””

The attorney paused.

“What do you mean?””

Robert looked at the judge.

“I believe there has been a misunderstanding.””

Teresa’s face changed.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

Fear.

The attorney frowned.

“Mr. Hale, please explain.””

Robert folded his hands.

“Michael did trust Teresa.””

My heart sank.

“But he also knew her.””

The room became silent.

Robert continued.

“He created a condition.””

“A condition?””

“Yes.””

The judge leaned forward.

“What condition?””

Robert looked directly at me.

“Connor was never supposed to receive control of the property until he discovered the truth about the estate.””

I froze.

“What truth?””

Robert reached into his briefcase.

And pulled out a sealed envelope.

My name was written on it.

My father’s handwriting.

The same handwriting from the letter.

Robert held it up.

“This was left with me twenty years ago.””

My mother suddenly stood.

“Your Honor, this is irrelevant.””

The judge looked at her.

“Sit down, Mrs. Hayes.””

She slowly sat.

Robert looked at me.

“Your father wanted you to have this when you were ready.””

Daniel whispered:

“Connor…”

I barely heard him.

Because I knew.

Whatever was inside that envelope was the reason my mother had spent years controlling the story.

Robert opened it.

And before reading it, he said one sentence that changed everything.

“Michael Hayes did not trust Teresa to protect his son.””

May you like

He looked at my mother.

“He trusted her to reveal herself.””
