Chapter 12: The Secret Evelyn Never Told Me

I called Evelyn before I even finished reading the message again.

She answered after one ring.

“Connor?””

My voice was tense.

“Someone told me to ask why you disappeared.””

Silence.

A long silence.

That was the first answer.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

Evelyn sighed.

“I was hoping you wouldn’t find out this way.””

My chest tightened.

“Find out what?””

“Your father didn’t just ask me to protect you.””

I sat down.

“What does that mean?””

“It means he asked me to leave.””

I froze.

“What?””

“After he died, I wanted to fight for you.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

“Because your father made me promise.””

“Why?””

Her voice became softer.

“Because he knew Teresa would use you against me.””

I closed my eyes.

Another piece of the puzzle.

My father knew.

He knew my mother’s power came from controlling relationships.

“What did he tell you?””

Evelyn was quiet.

“Michael believed Teresa would eventually isolate you from anyone who challenged her.””

I looked around the room.

The house felt different.

Like every wall held a secret.

“He knew she would do this?””

“Yes.””

“Then why leave me with her?””

Evelyn’s voice broke.

“Because she was your mother.””

That answer hurt.

Because it was true.

Even knowing someone was dangerous did not always mean you could remove them from a child’s life.

But there was more.

I could feel it.

“Evelyn.””

“Yes?””

“What else?””

She didn’t answer.

“Please.””

Finally, she spoke.

“Your father discovered something about Victoria.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“She wasn’t just Teresa’s business partner.””

“Then what was she?””

Evelyn took a breath.

“She was someone your mother knew before she met your father.””

I frowned.

“From where?””

“From another life.””

I stood.

“What does that mean?””

“Before Teresa married your father, she was involved with people who specialized in buying struggling businesses and properties.””

I felt cold.

“Like what she’s doing now.””

“Yes.””

The pieces started connecting.

The holding company.

The fake documents.

The buyer.

Victoria.

This wasn’t a sudden betrayal.

It was a pattern.

“Evelyn, why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of Teresa?””

“Yes.””

I walked toward the window.

“She already took twenty years from us.””

“I know.””

“Why are you still protecting her?””

“I’m not.””

Her voice shook.

“I’m protecting you.””

I stopped.

“What?””

“There is something you need to know before you confront your mother again.””

“What?””

Evelyn whispered:

“Your father didn’t just leave evidence against Teresa.””

I waited.

“He left evidence against Victoria.””

My heart started racing.

“What kind of evidence?””

“I don’t know.””

“What do you mean?””

“Michael gave it to someone.””

“Who?””

Another silence.

Then:

“Mason.””

I froze.

“Mason?””

“Yes.””

I immediately called him.

He answered quickly.

“Connor?””

“Evelyn says my father gave you something.””

Silence.

“Mason.””

He exhaled.

“I was hoping you wouldn’t ask.””

My jaw tightened.

“What did you get?””

“When I was sixteen, your mother made me help her clean out your father’s storage unit.””

“And?””

“I found a box.””

“What was inside?””

“Documents.””

“What documents?””

He hesitated.

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

His voice lowered.

“Your mother and Victoria weren’t just planning to take your house.””

I waited.

“They were planning to take everything.””

I felt anger rising.

“Where are the documents now?””

“Hidden.””

“Where?””

Mason swallowed.

“Somewhere your mother would never look.””

“Where?””

A pause.

Then:

“Your father’s old workshop.””

I had never heard of it.

“My father had a workshop?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

Mason gave me an address.

I recognized it.

An abandoned property outside Nashville.

A place my mother told me was sold years ago.

I grabbed my jacket.

Amy stood from the couch.

“Where are you going?””

I looked at her.

“To find the truth.””

She stepped closer.

“Connor.””

I stopped.

She touched my arm.

“Come back.””

That simple sentence almost broke me.

Because for years, my mother had made me feel like leaving meant betrayal.

But Amy wasn’t asking me to choose.

She was asking me to return.

I kissed her forehead.

“I will.””

The workshop was exactly how I imagined.

Old.

Dusty.

Forgotten.

But inside, everything changed.

Because behind a loose wooden panel, I found a small metal box.

Inside were papers.

Photos.

Bank records.

And one final letter.

This one wasn’t from my father.

It was from my mother.

A letter she had written twenty years earlier.

The first line made my blood run cold.

*Michael still doesn’t know what I did.*

I kept reading.

The next sentence stopped me completely.

*If Connor ever finds this, everything is over.*

I turned the page.

And there was the truth my mother had spent decades hiding.

The truth about my father’s death.

The truth about Victoria.

And the reason my mother had been desperate to control me since I was a child.

Because my father didn’t die by accident.

According to the letter…

My mother knew exactly what happened.
