Chapter 7: The Name Hidden in My Father’s Will

I stared at Mason.

“The person my mother has been hiding?””

He nodded slowly.

I could hear my own heartbeat.

The office suddenly felt smaller.

My mother stood near the desk, completely silent.

That scared me more than her yelling ever could.

Teresa always had something to say.

A justification.

An excuse.

A story.

But now she had nothing.

I looked down at the document in Mason’s hands.

“Give it to me.””

He hesitated.

“Connor…”

“Give me the file.””

Slowly, he handed it over.

The first page was old.

The paper was yellowed around the edges.

The ink had faded slightly.

But the words were clear.

*Last Will and Testament of Michael Hayes.*

My father.

A man I barely remembered.

He died when I was nine years old.

For most of my life, I only knew the version my mother told me.

My father left us with nothing.

My father made mistakes.

My father couldn’t be trusted.

My father abandoned us.

I grew up believing those things.

But now, standing in that office, I wondered if my mother had been rewriting the past for decades.

I turned the page.

Then I saw the name.

*Beneficiary: Connor Hayes.*

My hands shook.

I kept reading.

The house.

The property.

The land.

Everything my father owned was supposed to transfer to me when I became an adult.

Not my mother.

Not a company.

Not a stranger.

Me.

I looked up.

“Why did you tell me Dad left nothing?””

My mother’s face changed.

For the first time, she looked older.

Not powerful.

Not intimidating.

Just caught.

“I was protecting you.””

I laughed.

“Protecting me?””

“Yes.””

“By lying?””

She stepped forward.

“You were a child.””

“I was nine.””

“Exactly.””

Her voice became softer.

“You don’t understand how complicated everything was.””

I held up the document.

“You stole something that belonged to your son.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“Watch your words.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I spent my whole life watching my words around you.””

Victoria quietly moved toward the door.

I noticed.

“Where are you going?””

She stopped.

“This is a family matter.””

I looked at her.

“No.””

I held up the paperwork.

“This is a fraud matter.””

Her expression hardened.

My mother immediately stepped between us.

“Connor, you don’t know what you’re doing.””

I looked at her.

“I know exactly what I’m doing.””

I turned to Mason.

“Where did you find this?””

“In a storage box.””

“Whose?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“Your father’s.””

I frowned.

“My father’s belongings were destroyed years ago.””

“That’s what your mother told everyone.””

The room went quiet.

I looked at Teresa.

She didn’t deny it.

That was enough.

I walked out with Mason and called Daniel immediately.

He answered after one ring.

“What happened?””

“I found my father’s will.””

There was silence.

Then:

“Connor, are you sure?””

“Yes.””

“Send me everything.””

I sent photos of every page.

Ten minutes later, Daniel called back.

“This changes everything.””

“How?””

“Your mother may have no legal ownership claim over the property.””

I looked back at the office window.

“She knew that.””

“Yes.””

“She knew all these years?””

Daniel paused.

“Based on what you’ve shown me, it appears she did.””

I closed my eyes.

My mother had spent years telling me she sacrificed everything for me.

But the truth was worse.

She had been taking from me.

That evening, I sat at home with Amy while Frederick played on the floor.

Amy noticed my expression.

“What happened?””

I handed her the copy of the will.

She read it slowly.

Then looked at me.

“Connor…”

“My father left the house to me.””

She looked toward the walls around us.

“So your mother never owned it.””

“No.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“Then why did she act like she did?””

I stared at our son.

Because I finally understood.

My mother didn’t want the house.

Not really.

She wanted control.

Control over my money.

My decisions.

My family.

My entire life.

The next morning, Daniel called again.

“There’s something else.””

I sat up.

“What?””

“The will mentions another person.””

My heart tightened.

“Who?””

“A woman.””

“Who?””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Your father’s sister.””

I froze.

“My aunt?””

“Yes.””

“I don’t have an aunt.””

“That’s what I thought.””

I looked at Amy.

She immediately knew something was wrong.

“Connor?””

Daniel continued.

“Your mother removed her from the family records.””

My stomach dropped.

“Why?””

A pause.

Then Daniel said:

“Because your aunt was the person your father trusted to protect you.””

I stared at the phone.

My father’s sister.

A woman I never knew existed.

A woman my mother had erased.

“Where is she now?””

Daniel was quiet.

Then:

“She’s been living in Nashville this entire time.””

My heart started racing.

“Why would she stay hidden?””

Daniel answered:

“Because according to these documents, she wasn’t the one hiding.””

I felt cold.

“Then who was?””

Before Daniel could answer, another call came through.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

Then I saw the caller ID.

A name I had never seen before.

*Evelyn Hayes.*

My father’s sister.

I answered.

A woman’s trembling voice spoke.

“Connor?””

“Yes.””

May you like

There was a long pause.

“I’ve waited twenty years to hear your voice.””
