Chapter 9: What Max Remembered

Daniel locked the back door.

My mother closed every curtain.

And I stood in the middle of the living room, trying to understand how my ordinary life had become something I couldn’t recognize.

Three days ago, my biggest problem was choosing a college dorm.

Now strangers were watching my house because of my father’s dog.

A dog who was currently standing beside me like he had been waiting for this moment.

“Who is that man?””

I whispered.

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me.

“Daniel.””

He looked at me.

“His name is Victor Hale.””

The name meant nothing.

But the way he said it did.

“You know him.””

“Yes.””

“Who is he?””

Daniel looked at Max.

“He’s the reason your father disappeared from that investigation.””

My heart skipped.

“Wait.””

I stared at him.

“Are you saying Dad didn’t just die?””

My mother looked at me.

“Emily…”

“No.””

I turned toward her.

“No more secrets.””

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Daniel said:

“Your father died in an accident.””

I exhaled.

Relief and pain mixed together.

“But Victor was involved in the events leading up to it.””

My hands curled into fists.

“What does that mean?””

“It means your father found out too much.””

The room went quiet.

Max suddenly walked toward the hallway.

Slowly.

He stopped beside Dad’s old office door.

I stared.

“That room has been locked since he died.””

My mother looked uncomfortable.

“Why?””

“Because I couldn’t open it.””

I walked closer.

“Why?””

She looked down.

“Because everything inside was him.””

I reached for the handle.

It was unlocked.

The door opened with a quiet creak.

Dust covered the desk.

Dad’s books.

His old jacket.

Everything was exactly where he left it.

Except one thing.

A photo frame on the desk.

I picked it up.

It showed Dad holding Max as a puppy.

On the back, there was writing.

Not Dad’s.

Someone else’s.

*He belongs with the Carter family. Keep him safe.*

I turned around.

“Daniel?””

He looked at the photo.

And went pale.

“What?””

He walked closer.

“That wasn’t there before.””

My heart started beating faster.

“What does it mean?””

Daniel looked toward Max.

“He remembers.””

I frowned.

“Dogs don’t remember things like that.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Max isn’t like other dogs.””

Before I could respond, Max suddenly pushed his nose against the desk drawer.

Again.

And again.

I opened it.

Inside was a small metal box.

My hands shook as I pulled it out.

It was locked.

But attached to it was a note.

Dad’s handwriting.

Emily,

If you found this, then Max led you here.

I froze.

Daniel whispered:

“Your father knew.””

I opened the note.

The next line made my heart race.

He always knew the truth would come back.

Inside the box is everything you need to understand why Max matters.

I looked at the lock.

“What’s the key?””

My mother slowly stepped forward.

“I have it.””

I turned.

She reached into her purse.

And pulled out a tiny silver key.

My face went blank.

“You had this?””

She looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because your father gave it to me.””

I stared at her.

“And you never opened it?””

She shook her head.

“He told me not to.””

I almost laughed.

“You trusted him enough to keep a secret for three years?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked at Max.

“Because the night before he died, your father said something I never forgot.””

I waited.

“He said…”

Her voice broke.

“If anything happens to me, Max will know who to find.””

The room went silent.

I looked down at the old dog beside me.

Max looked back.

Then he placed his paw on the metal box.

A small movement.

But everyone saw it.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Open it.””

I inserted the key.

The lock clicked.

Inside was a stack of papers.

Photos.

And one envelope.

Not addressed to me.

Not to my mother.

To Max.

I stared.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel whispered:

“No.””

He looked terrified.

“It’s exactly what your father planned.””

I picked up the envelope.

My fingers trembled.

May you like

Because written on the front were four words.

*For the dog who remembers.*
