Chapter 12: The Night Everything Changed

I read the message three times.

Each time, the words hurt more.

The night he chose Max over you.

I wanted to believe it was a lie.

A cruel trick.

But Victor knew too much.

He knew about Dad.

He knew about Max.

And somehow, he knew how to hurt me.

My mother saw my face.

“What did he say?””

I handed her the phone.

She read it.

Then her expression changed.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“You know something.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Mom.””

“I don’t know everything.””

“That’s not the same as nothing.””

She sat down.

Her hands trembled.

“There was a night before your father died.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You never told me.””

“Because your father made me promise.””

I closed my eyes.

Another promise.

Another secret.

“What happened?””

My mother looked at Max.

“Your father came home late.””

I listened.

“Max was injured.””

My heart tightened.

“What?””

“He had a cut on his side.””

Daniel looked shocked.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because your father said it wasn’t an accident.””

The room went quiet.

I looked at Max.

He had been there.

He knew.

My mother continued.

“He said someone was trying to scare him.””

“Victor?””

She nodded slowly.

“Your father believed so.””

I swallowed.

“What happened after that?””

She wiped her eyes.

“He packed a bag.””

I froze.

“He was going to leave?””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“He was going to take Max somewhere safe.””

My heart sank.

“Where?””

“I don’t know.””

“Mom.””

“I don’t know!””

Her voice cracked.

Then she lowered it.

“He came to my room before he left.””

I waited.

“He told me if he didn’t come back…”

She looked at me.

“He told me to never let anyone take Max away.””

The words hit me.

My mother had broken the promise.

But not because she didn’t care.

Because she was afraid.

Daniel walked toward Max.

“He knew.””

I looked at him.

“Knew what?””

Daniel pointed at Max.

“He knew your father was in danger.””

I frowned.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Your father believed Max warned him.””

“Warned him?””

“Before every attack. Before every threat. Max reacted before anyone else knew.””

I looked at the old dog.

Suddenly, all those nights outside my bedroom door felt different.

Maybe he wasn’t just comforting me.

Maybe he was guarding me.

A sound came from outside.

The same truck.

Victor.

Daniel turned off the lights.

“He found us.””

I whispered:

“How?””

Daniel looked at the flash drive.

“Because he wanted this.””

The door handle moved.

Slowly.

Someone was trying to open it.

My mother grabbed my hand.

Max stood.

Old bones.

Weak legs.

But his eyes were the same.

The door opened slightly.

Victor stepped inside.

“Emily.””

Daniel moved forward.

“Don’t.””

Victor ignored him.

His eyes stayed on Max.

“I’m not here to hurt anyone.””

I laughed.

“You broke into an abandoned building.””

Victor looked at me.

“I came to finish what your father started.””

My anger rose.

“You killed him.””

Victor’s expression changed.

“No.””

A pause.

Then:

“Your father died because he made a choice.””

I stepped forward.

“What choice?””

Victor looked at Max.

“He chose that dog over the truth.””

My heartbeat increased.

“What truth?””

Victor reached into his coat.

He pulled out an old photograph.

And placed it on the table.

I looked down.

The photo showed Dad.

Holding Max.

Standing beside another person.

A person I recognized.

My mother gasped.

Because standing beside Dad was someone we never expected.

Someone who should not have been there.

My grandfather.

Alive.

And underneath the photo was a date.

Three years after everyone said he died.

Victor whispered:

“Your father didn’t just hide Max.””

May you like

He looked at me.

“He hid the fact that your grandfather was still alive.””
