Chapter 14: The Last Promise

Nobody spoke after the call ended.

Not for a long time.

My mind kept replaying the same sentence.

He’s been waiting for Max to come home.

Not me.

Not my father.

Max.

The dog lying beside my feet had been the center of a mystery for years.

And somehow, he had never known.

Or maybe he had.

Maybe he had always known more than we did.

Daniel broke the silence.

“We need to leave.””

Victor looked at him.

“For once, we agree.””

I looked between them.

“No.””

They both stopped.

I picked up the photograph.

“No more running.””

My voice shook.

“No more people deciding what I can handle.””

I looked at my mother.

“No more secrets.””

She nodded slowly.

“You’re right.””

Victor studied me.

“You sound like your father.””

I ignored that.

“Where is my grandfather?””

Nobody answered.

Then Max stood.

He walked toward the door.

Everyone watched.

Because somehow, we all understood.

He was choosing.

The dog who had been moved around.

Hidden.

Protected.

Controlled.

Was finally deciding where to go.

Daniel opened the door.

“He knows.””

We followed Max.

Not because we understood.

Because we trusted him.

The drive took almost an hour.

Nobody talked.

The location was outside the city.

An old farmhouse surrounded by empty fields.

My chest tightened when we arrived.

Because it looked familiar.

Dad had brought me here once.

When I was little.

He told me it was just an old friend’s property.

He lied.

Again.

Max stepped out of the car.

He stared at the house.

Then he walked forward.

Slowly.

The front door opened.

An elderly man stood there.

Older than I expected.

Smaller.

Fragile.

But when he saw Max, his entire face changed.

“Max.””

The dog stopped.

For a moment, neither moved.

Then Max walked forward.

The old man fell to his knees.

And cried.

“I thought I’d never see you again.””

I stood frozen.

Because I had never seen a stranger look at Max like family.

The man looked at me.

And his eyes filled with tears.

“Emily.””

I stepped back.

“How do you know me?””

He smiled sadly.

“Because I knew your father.””

I swallowed.

“You’re my grandfather.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

The world became quiet.

I had imagined this moment.

A thousand times.

A mysterious reunion.

A family secret.

But I never imagined feeling angry.

Not happy.

Angry.

“You were alive.””

His face fell.

“Yes.””

“Dad knew.””

“Yes.””

“And he lied to me.””

My grandfather looked down.

“He was trying to protect you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone says that.””

He accepted the anger.

He deserved it.

“I was wrong.””

That surprised me.

No excuses.

No defense.

Just regret.

“Your father gave me a second chance.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

He looked at Max.

“After everything I did, he was the one person who believed I could change.””

I looked at Victor.

“And him?””

My grandfather’s expression darkened.

“Victor believed the work mattered more than people.””

Victor looked away.

My grandfather continued.

“Your father discovered what we created could hurt others.””

I looked at Max.

“And he protected him.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

My grandfather smiled sadly.

“Because your father understood something I forgot.””

He looked at me.

“Love is not something you measure by usefulness.””

My eyes burned.

That sounded exactly like Dad.

My grandfather reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small key.

“Your father left this for you.””

I stared.

“Another secret?””

He nodded.

“The final one.””

I took it.

“What does it open?””

He looked at Max.

“Something your father never wanted anyone else to find.””

Before I could ask, headlights appeared outside.

Multiple vehicles.

Daniel looked toward the window.

His face changed.

“No.””

Victor moved toward the door.

“What?””

Daniel whispered:

“They followed us.””

My grandfather looked at Max.

Then at me.

“Emily.””

I turned.

“Your father knew this day might come.””

My heart raced.

“What did he leave?””

May you like

My grandfather looked toward the basement door.

“The truth about what happened the night he died.””
