Chapter 8: The Secret Dad Buried
The man outside didn’t come to the door.
That somehow made it worse.
He just stood beside the truck.
Watching.
Waiting.
Like he knew eventually we would make a mistake.
Daniel moved away from the window.
“We need to get Max out of here.””
I stared at him.
“Absolutely not.””
He looked at me.
“Emily.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You don’t get to appear after three years of silence and tell me to trust you.””
His expression softened.
“I understand.””
“Do you?””
My voice shook.
“You knew my father. You knew about Max. You knew my mother was hiding things.””
Daniel didn’t argue.
“That’s fair.””
“Then explain.””
He looked at Max.
“Your father found him when he was investigating a company called North Valley Research.””
The name meant nothing to me.
“What kind of company?””
“Animal genetics.””
I frowned.
“You’re saying Dad worked with animals?””
“No.””
Daniel’s face became serious.
“He was investigating what they were doing to them.””
The room went quiet.
I looked at Max.
The old dog lying near the couch.
The dog who used to steal Dad’s socks.
The dog who slept outside my door.
“You’re telling me Max was part of an experiment?””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Not an experiment.””
He corrected himself.
“A test.””
My mother covered her mouth.
“I didn’t know the details.””
I turned.
“You knew enough.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I knew your father was scared.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because he made me promise.””
I looked at her.
“Dad made you promise to lie to me?””
She flinched.
“Yes.””
That hurt.
More than I expected.
Daniel walked toward the table.
“Your father thought keeping you away from this was the only way to protect you.””
“Protect me?””
I laughed quietly.
“He died, and I spent three years thinking he just left me.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“He never left you.””
I looked away.
“You don’t know that.””
“I do.””
His voice was firm.
“Because I was with him.””
I looked back.
“What?””
Daniel reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small recorder.
“This was the last thing your father gave me.””
My hands went cold.
“Why do you have it?””
“Because he knew he might not come back.””
My mother sat down.
“No…”
Daniel pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then Dad’s voice.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakable.
“Daniel, if you’re hearing this, something went wrong.””
My knees almost gave out.
I grabbed the chair.
Dad continued.
“Don’t let them take Max back.””
A pause.
A deep breath.
“He’s not just a dog. He’s proof.””
I looked at Daniel.
Proof.
Of what?
Dad’s voice continued.
“I know Emily will ask questions. She always has.””
A small laugh.
Even through the recording, I could hear his smile.
“Tell her I’m sorry.””
My eyes burned.
“Tell her I wanted to explain everything.””
The recording became quieter.
“But she needs to know this.””
A pause.
Then:
“Max chose her.””
The room went silent.
I looked at the dog beside me.
Dad’s voice continued.
“From the first day, Max trusted Emily. That wasn’t an accident.””
I shook my head.
“This doesn’t make sense.””
Daniel stopped the recording.
“He believed Max had a connection to your family.””
I stared.
“What kind of connection?””
Before Daniel could answer, the lights went out.
The entire house went dark.
My mother gasped.
“What happened?””
Daniel immediately moved toward the window.
“Everyone stay away from the glass.””
My heart started racing.
“Why?””
He didn’t answer.
Outside, the black truck door opened.
The man stepped out.
Slowly.
Calmly.
Like he wasn’t worried about being seen.
Daniel whispered:
“They found us.””
Max suddenly growled.
I had heard Max bark thousands of times.
But I had never heard that sound.
Not from him.
It wasn’t fear.
It was recognition.
The man outside stopped.
Even through the window, I saw him react.
Like he heard Max.
Then he spoke.
Not loudly.
But enough.
“After all these years…”
My blood ran cold.
May you like
The man looked directly at the house.
“…you’re still protecting him.””
