Chapter 7: The Stranger at the Door

For five seconds, nobody moved.

Max stood at the front door, trembling slightly.

Not from fear.

From recognition.

I knew that look.

I had seen it years ago when Dad came home from business trips.

Max would freeze for a moment, like his brain needed to confirm what his eyes were seeing.

Then he would explode with happiness.

But Dad wasn’t standing outside.

Nobody was.

I slowly walked toward the window.

“Max?””

He didn’t look at me.

His eyes stayed locked on the front porch.

My mother stood behind me.

“Emily…”

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

“Don’t open that door.””

I turned.

“Why?””

She didn’t answer.

That was becoming her favorite response.

Silence.

Secrets.

Half-truths.

I looked through the curtain.

A black truck was parked across the street.

No one was inside.

“Mom.””

She stepped closer.

“Please.””

“Please what?””

“Please don’t make the same mistake your father made.””

My heart stopped.

“What mistake?””

She looked toward Max.

“Trusting the wrong people.””

Before I could ask another question, someone knocked.

Three slow knocks.

Max immediately sat down.

His ears lowered.

Not aggressive.

Not scared.

Waiting.

I reached for the door handle.

My mother grabbed my arm.

“Emily.””

I looked at her hand.

Then at her face.

For the first time, I saw something I had never seen before.

My mother was afraid.

Not of me.

Of whoever was outside.

I gently pulled my arm away.

“I need answers.””

I opened the door.

An older man stood on the porch.

Gray hair.

Weathered face.

The same man from the photo.

Daniel.

For a moment, none of us spoke.

His eyes moved past me.

Straight to Max.

The expression on his face changed.

Pain.

Relief.

Regret.

“Max.””

The dog slowly stepped forward.

My body tensed.

I didn’t know this man.

I didn’t know his intentions.

But Max knew him.

The moment Daniel lowered himself, Max walked closer.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Then he rested his head against the man’s hand.

My chest tightened.

Because Max had not done that with anyone since Dad died.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I thought I’d never see you again.””

I stepped between them.

“Who are you?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I already told you.””

“No.””

My voice sharpened.

“You told me your name.””

I pointed at Max.

“But you haven’t told me why my father trusted you.””

Daniel stood slowly.

“Your father and I worked together.””

“Doing what?””

He hesitated.

That hesitation made me angry.

“Everyone keeps saying my dad was protecting Max. Protecting him from what?””

Daniel looked at my mother.

She looked away.

That told me everything.

“You knew he was coming?””

I turned.

My mother didn’t answer.

“Mom.””

“I didn’t know today.””

“But you knew he existed.””

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The betrayal felt worse than I expected.

“You knew him?””

“Emily…”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You knew there was someone connected to Dad, and you never told me?””

My mother whispered:

“Your father asked me not to.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Of course he did.””

Daniel looked between us.

“He wanted you out of this.””

I looked at him.

“Out of what?””

He reached into his jacket.

Pulled out an old photograph.

And handed it to me.

It showed Dad.

Daniel.

And Max.

But behind them was a building.

A warehouse.

A logo painted on the wall.

I recognized it.

The same logo from Max’s old rescue paperwork.

“What is this?””

Daniel looked serious.

“That’s where Max came from.””

I studied the photo.

“An animal rescue?””

“No.””

The word was quiet.

But it changed everything.

“Not originally.””

I looked up.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel glanced at Max.

“Your father discovered that Max was part of something bigger.””

My patience disappeared.

“Stop talking in riddles.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“You deserve the truth.””

He looked at my mother.

“So does she.””

My mother’s face went pale.

Daniel continued.

“Max wasn’t abandoned by accident.””

The room went silent.

“He was taken.””

I felt cold.

“Taken from who?””

Daniel looked directly at me.

“From a man who spent years trying to find him.””

My stomach dropped.

“Who?””

Daniel took a breath.

Then he said:

“Your grandfather.””

I froze.

“My grandfather?””

My father’s father had died before I was born.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Max.

“It’s the reason your father hid the truth.””

A car engine suddenly started outside.

Daniel turned toward the window.

His expression changed.

Fear.

“Too late.””

I looked outside.

The black truck was no longer empty.

A man sat behind the wheel.

Watching the house.

Daniel stepped back.

“Emily, listen carefully.””

His voice became urgent.

“You cannot let them know Max is here.””

I stared at him.

“Who are they?””

The man outside opened the truck door.

May you like

Daniel whispered:

“The people your father was running from.””
