Chapter 8: The Woman Who Never Died
I spent the next morning trying to understand one impossible fact.
Claire Carter was alive.
At least according to my father.
The woman Brandon believed had been taken from him wasn’t a victim of a tragedy.
She was a person who knew a secret.
And someone had spent decades making sure that secret stayed buried.
My father arranged a meeting with his oldest investigator, a man named Marcus Reed.
He arrived at noon carrying a thick file.
“I found what you asked for.””
My father nodded.
“Tell Emily everything.””
Marcus looked at me.
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
He opened the file.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Records.
One picture showed Claire Carter leaving a building.
Alive.
Years after her supposed disappearance.
I stared.
“That’s her.””
Marcus nodded.
“Taken fourteen years ago.””
My father’s jaw tightened.
“Why didn’t we find her?””
“Because she didn’t want to be found.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
Marcus removed another document.
“Because she was afraid.””
“Of who?””
He looked at my father.
“That’s what we’re trying to figure out.””
I turned to my father.
“You knew she was alive?””
“No.””
“But you knew someone was hiding her.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“Because I thought keeping you away from this would protect you.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
“What?””
“That they’re protecting me.””
I looked around the room.
“But all it did was leave me unprepared.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Marcus placed another paper on the table.
“This is important.””
I looked down.
It was a bank transfer.
A recent one.
The sender name was hidden.
But the recipient wasn’t.
Claire Carter.
My heart raced.
“She’s alive.””
“Yes.””
“And someone is still paying her.””
Marcus nodded.
“Every month.””
My father leaned forward.
“Where is the money coming from?””
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
“That’s the problem.””
“What?””
“It’s coming from a company connected to Brandon.””
The room went silent.
I stared at the document.
“Brandon?””
Marcus shook his head.
“Not directly.””
“Then who?””
He placed another file down.
“Daniel Carter.””
Everything clicked.
Daniel wasn’t just manipulating Brandon.
He was controlling the entire story.
“He knew Claire was alive,” I whispered.
“Yes.””
“And he never told Brandon.””
“No.””
My father looked furious.
“Why?””
Marcus answered quietly.
“Because Daniel needed Brandon angry.””
“Why?””
“Because an angry man is easier to control.””
I thought about Brandon.
His bitterness.
His obsession with proving himself.
His need to defeat my family.
Daniel had spent years feeding those feelings.
A knock interrupted us.
One of the guards entered.
“Mr. Williams.””
“What?””
“We found something in Mrs. Carter’s old records.””
Marcus looked surprised.
“What?””
The guard handed him an envelope.
Marcus opened it carefully.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
The handwriting was old.
But the signature at the bottom was clear.
Claire Carter.
Marcus read the first line.
Then stopped.
“What?””
My father grabbed the letter.
His eyes moved quickly.
Then his expression changed.
“What does it say?”” I asked.
He looked at me.
“Claire wrote this before she disappeared.””
“And?””
My father swallowed.
“She said Thomas Carter was not the person who betrayed her.””
My stomach tightened.
“Then who was?””
My father continued reading.
His hands started shaking.
“She wrote that the person who destroyed everything was someone inside the Williams family.””
I froze.
“What?””
Marcus looked between us.
“That’s impossible.””
But my father didn’t respond.
Because he was staring at the final line.
The line Claire had written before vanishing.
I stepped closer.
“What does it say?””
My father slowly turned the letter around.
The words were simple.
But they changed everything.
*Richard Williams was not the only person in his family who knew the truth.*
I looked at my father.
“What does that mean?””
He didn’t answer.
Because at that exact moment, the front door opened.
And a woman’s voice came from the hallway.
May you like
A voice none of us expected to hear.
“Because your grandfather had another daughter.””
