Chapter 5: The Truth Hidden in the Trust

My father’s house had always felt like a sanctuary.

When I was a child, I ran through its halls without fear.

Tonight, every room felt unfamiliar.

Not because the house had changed.

Because I had.

I sat in the library, wrapped in a blanket while my father’s attorneys worked through stacks of documents.

My entire life had been turned upside down in a single evening.

My husband was a liar.

His mistress had a secret child with him.

Millions of dollars had disappeared.

And now someone had been planning everything.

My father entered the room carrying two cups of coffee.

He placed one in front of me.

“You should rest.””

I shook my head.

“I can’t.””

He sat across from me.

“I know.””

I looked at him.

“Why didn’t you tell me about the trust?””

He sighed.

“Because your grandfather created it for one reason.””

“What reason?””

“To protect you.””

I looked down.

“But it also protected Brandon.””

My father’s expression changed.

“That was never supposed to happen.””

I remembered the first time Brandon told me about his company.

He had been so proud.

He said investors believed in him.

He said he built everything himself.

But now I knew the truth.

My family had been silently keeping him alive.

“Did you know he was struggling?””

“Yes.””

My eyes lifted.

“You knew?””

“I knew his company was unstable.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

My father looked hurt.

“Because I wanted you to have your own life.””

I looked away.

“I defended him.””

“I know.””

“I told you he was a good man.””

My father was quiet.

That hurt more than anger.

A knock interrupted us.

The attorney entered.

“Mr. Williams.””

My father stood.

“What did you find?””

She placed a file on the table.

“We traced the payments.””

My stomach tightened.

“And?””

“The money from Emily’s trust wasn’t stolen randomly.””

She opened the file.

“It was transferred through several shell companies.””

My father studied the papers.

“Who controlled them?””

She hesitated.

“That’s the problem.””

“What?””

“The companies were created under different names.””

She pointed to a document.

“But they all lead back to one location.””

My father read the address.

Then his face changed.

I noticed.

“Dad?””

He looked at me.

“It’s impossible.””

“What?””

He slowly handed me the paper.

The address meant nothing to me.

But the name below it did.

A company.

One I recognized.

Because Brandon had mentioned it before.

“What is this?””

The attorney answered.

“Carter Holdings.””

My heart sank.

“Brandon’s company?””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“His father’s company.””

I frowned.

“His father?””

The room went silent.

My father looked troubled.

“Emily, there’s something you don’t know.””

I stared at him.

“About Brandon?””

“Yes.””

“What?””

My father sat down.

“Brandon Carter wasn’t born into the family he told you about.””

I waited.

“He was adopted.””

I blinked.

“What?””

“Years ago, the Carter family took him in.””

“Why does that matter?””

My father looked at the documents.

“Because Daniel Carter wasn’t just his brother.””

A chill went through me.

“What was he?””

My father’s voice lowered.

“His biological brother.””

I felt my breathing change.

“So Brandon knew?””

“Yes.””

“And he lied?””

“Yes.””

I stood up.

“Why?””

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was obvious.

There was something Brandon wanted.

Something bigger than money.

The attorney looked through another page.

“There’s more.””

“What?””

She placed another document down.

“This is a copy of an old trust agreement.””

My father read it.

Then he looked at me.

“Emily…”

“What?””

His expression became serious.

“Your grandfather knew the Carter family.””

I stared at him.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“It’s true.””

The attorney continued.

“According to this document, the Williams Family Trust and the Carter Estate Trust were connected twenty-five years ago.””

My mind raced.

“Connected how?””

She looked at me.

“Through a merger agreement.””

“What merger?””

She answered quietly.

“The one that created the company Brandon now believes belongs to him.””

I felt dizzy.

My husband hadn’t just married me for my family.

He had married me because of a secret that started before we ever met.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

Only one sentence appeared.

*Ask your father why he never told you what happened to Brandon’s mother.*

I looked up.

May you like

My father had gone completely still.

Because he knew exactly who sent it.
