Chapter 10: The Enemy Inside the Family
I stared at the document until the words blurred.
A signature.
A name.
A betrayal that reached deeper than I could understand.
My uncle.
The man who attended every family dinner.
The man who brought me birthday gifts when I was a child.
The man who told me I reminded him of my mother.
The man who had hugged me the night I graduated.
He had been behind everything?
“No,” I whispered.
Rebecca watched me carefully.
“I know it’s difficult to accept.””
I looked at her.
“You’re saying my uncle destroyed our family?””
“Yes.””
My father remained silent.
That scared me more than anything.
Because Richard Williams always fought.
He argued.
He negotiated.
He controlled every room he entered.
But now he stood there like a man who had lost the ability to deny something.
“Dad.””
He looked at me.
“Tell me she’s wrong.””
His eyes lowered.
And that was my answer.
I stepped back.
“How long?””
“Emily…”
“How long did you know?””
My father took a breath.
“I suspected.””
“SUSPECTED?””
My voice echoed through the library.
“You let me grow up around him.””
“I didn’t have proof.””
“You had enough to protect me.””
His face tightened.
“You’re right.””
That admission hurt.
Because for the first time, my father wasn’t defending himself.
He was accepting that he failed me.
Rebecca placed another file on the table.
“This contains the evidence Claire collected.””
Marcus picked it up.
“What kind of evidence?””
“Financial records. Transfers. Communication logs.””
He opened the file.
Then his expression changed.
“Where did you get this?””
“Claire gave it to me before she disappeared.””
My father looked at Rebecca.
“You kept this for thirty years?””
“I was waiting.””
“For what?””
“For the right person to expose the truth.””
She looked at me.
“And that person was supposed to be Emily.””
I frowned.
“Why me?””
Rebecca’s expression softened.
“Because Claire knew you would become the owner of the Williams trust.””
I froze.
“She knew?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“She helped create it.””
My father looked surprised.
“Claire helped?””
Rebecca nodded.
“She knew the future generations would need protection.””
I looked at the documents.
The more I learned, the more complicated everything became.
My family wasn’t just wealthy.
It was built on alliances, secrets, and old wounds.
And somehow, I had been placed in the center of it.
My phone suddenly rang.
Brandon.
I almost ignored it.
But something made me answer.
“Hello?””
His voice was rushed.
“Emily, you need to listen carefully.””
I looked at my father.
“What happened?””
“Daniel knows.””
My stomach tightened.
“Knows what?””
“That you found out.””
“How?””
A pause.
Then Brandon whispered:
“He’s coming after you.””
I stood.
“What does that mean?””
“Daniel doesn’t want your money.””
“I know.””
“He wants revenge.””
“Revenge for what?””
Brandon went quiet.
Then said:
“For my mother.””
The room became silent.
I looked at Rebecca.
She already knew.
“Brandon,” I said, “your mother is alive.””
The silence on the phone was immediate.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
“No.””
“Your mother is alive.””
His breathing changed.
“That’s impossible.””
“It isn’t.””
I heard something crack in his voice.
“My whole life…”
He stopped.
“What?””
“My whole life I thought she was dead.””
I softened slightly.
“Brandon…”
“No.””
His voice became angry.
“Who knew?””
Nobody answered.
Then he said:
“Daniel knew.””
The realization hit all of us.
Daniel had controlled Brandon by using a lie.
A lie that lasted decades.
“He told me my mother was destroyed because of your family.””
My father looked away.
“And now?””
Brandon’s voice broke.
“Now I know he was the one hiding her.””
Before I could respond, we heard a loud crash outside.
The security alarms activated again.
Everyone turned.
Marcus moved toward the window.
His face changed.
“What is it?””
He looked back.
“A car.””
“What about it?””
“It belongs to Daniel Carter.””
The room froze.
My father immediately reached for his phone.
“Lock every door.””
But it was too late.
The front entrance opened.
And a man’s voice echoed through the house.
“Richard.””
Nobody moved.
“After thirty years, you still hide behind locked doors.””
My father stepped forward.
“Daniel.””
The man entered the hallway.
Older than Brandon.
Calm.
Confident.
And completely unafraid.
He looked directly at me.
“So this is Emily.””
I felt a chill.
Because he smiled.
Not like a stranger.
May you like
Like someone who had known me my entire life.
“I’ve been waiting a long time to meet you.””
