Chapter 7: The Man Behind the Shadows

I didn’t sleep that night.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Brandon standing in that restaurant, telling me I was the final piece of someone else’s plan.

For years, I thought my biggest mistake was loving the wrong man.

Now I wondered if I had walked into something much larger.

Something planned.

Something that started before I was even born.

My father’s security team brought me back home after the meeting.

The moment I entered the library, my father looked up from a stack of documents.

“You met him.””

It wasn’t a question.

I nodded.

“He told me about Daniel.””

My father’s expression hardened.

“What exactly did he say?””

“That Daniel convinced him our family destroyed his mother.””

My father closed his eyes.

For a moment, he looked older.

Not like the powerful businessman everyone feared.

Like a father carrying a burden he had hidden for too long.

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

“Tell me the truth.””

He didn’t answer immediately.

Then he walked to the cabinet behind his desk and removed an old leather folder.

“I should have shown you this years ago.””

He placed it on the table.

Inside were newspaper clippings, photographs, and handwritten notes.

The first picture made my stomach drop.

A young woman stood beside my grandfather.

Claire Carter.

Brandon’s mother.

“She was brilliant,” my father said quietly.

I looked at the photo.

“She doesn’t look like someone who would betray anyone.””

“She wasn’t.””

“Then what happened?””

My father sat down.

“Your grandfather and Claire built Williams-Carter Investments together.””

I frowned.

“But I thought Williams Capital was always ours.””

“It was complicated.””

He pointed to the documents.

“Claire discovered someone inside the company was moving money through hidden accounts.””

“Who?””

My father hesitated.

“That’s the part nobody could prove.””

“Who did she suspect?””

He looked at me.

“Your grandfather’s business partner.””

I studied his face.

“You know his name.””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Before he could answer, the lights suddenly flickered.

My father immediately stood.

The security alarm activated.

A sharp sound filled the house.

“What’s happening?”” I asked.

He moved toward me.

“Stay behind me.””

A security guard rushed into the room.

“Mr. Williams, someone accessed the west entrance.””

My father’s face changed.

“No one should have access.””

The guard looked uncomfortable.

“That’s why I’m concerned.””

A moment later, another guard entered carrying an envelope.

“Found this outside.””

My father took it.

No name.

No address.

Just one sentence written across the front.

*You should have buried the past with Claire Carter.*

My heart stopped.

My father read it twice.

Then slowly folded it.

“Who is Claire Carter?”” I asked.

He looked at me.

“You already know.””

“No.””

His silence was terrifying.

“Dad.””

He walked toward the window.

“The man who introduced Claire to your grandfather was named Thomas Carter.””

I froze.

“Brandon’s father?””

“Yes.””

I felt a chill.

“You said Claire disappeared.””

“She did.””

“What happened to Thomas?””

My father looked back at me.

“He died three years later.””

“And Daniel?””

“He was young.””

“So Brandon spent his entire life believing we destroyed his parents.””

My father nodded.

“Yes.””

“But we didn’t.””

“No.””

“Then who did?””

My father looked at the message again.

“I don’t know.””

That answer scared me more than anything.

Because my father always knew.

He was the man who could find anything.

But someone had hidden this from him.

My phone buzzed.

A new message.

This time from an unknown number.

I opened it.

*Your father is lying. Ask him about the night Claire Carter died.*

I looked up.

My father saw my expression.

“What did it say?””

I showed him.

His face went pale.

“Emily.””

“What?””

He walked toward me slowly.

“Claire Carter didn’t disappear.””

My breathing stopped.

“What are you saying?””

He looked at the message.

Then at me.

“She was alive when I last saw her.””

The room went silent.

“Dad…”

His voice dropped.

“And she told me something I never forgot.””

“What?””

He looked terrified.

“She said if anything happened to her…”

May you like

He paused.

“She said the person who betrayed her would come after our children next.””
