Chapter 2: The Secret Behind His Success
Brandon stood frozen in the driveway, holding the documents like they were written in another language.
“This doesn’t make sense,” he said.
The confident husband who had thrown me out twenty minutes earlier was gone.
Now he looked like a man watching his entire life collapse.
My father remained beside me.
“It makes perfect sense, Brandon.””
Brandon looked at him.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“Knew what?””
“That my daughter was the person protecting your company from failure.””
The silence that followed felt heavier than the rain.
Vanessa stepped outside.
“What is he talking about?””
Nobody answered her.
She looked at Brandon.
“Brandon?””
He ignored her.
His eyes stayed on me.
“Emily…”
I had heard my name from him thousands of times.
But this time it sounded different.
Fearful.
“Tell me this isn’t true.””
I looked at him.
“What exactly?””
“That your family owns the trust.””
I said nothing.
My silence answered him.
Vanessa’s face changed.
“Wait.””
She looked between us.
“Emily is Richard Williams’ daughter?””
My father turned toward her.
“Yes.””
Her confidence disappeared instantly.
The same woman who had laughed at me earlier suddenly looked uncomfortable.
Brandon stepped closer.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
I almost smiled.
“Would it have changed anything?””
“Of course it would.””
“No, Brandon.””
My voice shook.
“You would have treated me differently because of my money.””
“That’s not true.””
I stared at him.
“Isn’t it?””
He had no answer.
The attorney cleared her throat.
“Mr. Carter, we need to discuss your company’s financial agreements.””
Brandon looked irritated.
“Now?””
“Yes. Now.””
She opened another folder.
“Your company has missed several repayment obligations.””
His face tightened.
“That’s temporary.””
My father’s expression remained cold.
“No, Brandon. It isn’t.””
“You knew about this?””
“I knew everything.””
Brandon looked betrayed.
“You let this happen?””
My father stepped forward.
“I gave you every opportunity to correct your mistakes.””
“What mistakes?””
“Mismanagement. Hidden transfers. Unauthorized withdrawals.””
Brandon’s face changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
A flicker of panic.
My father saw it too.
“What happened to the money?””
Brandon looked away.
“I don’t know what you mean.””
The attorney reached into her folder.
“Then perhaps you can explain this.””
She handed my father a document.
He read it silently.
Then his eyes moved to me.
“Emily.””
Something about his voice scared me.
“What?””
He looked back at Brandon.
“Why was money transferred from your personal trust account?””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
The attorney placed another paper in front of me.
A transaction record.
$2.8 million.
Transferred.
My name was attached.
But I had never approved it.
“I didn’t do this.””
My father looked at Brandon.
“Did you?””
Brandon immediately shook his head.
“No.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Brandon?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“Not now.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
“It means nothing.””
But it didn’t sound like nothing.
The attorney tapped the document.
“The authorization carries Mr. Carter’s signature.””
My heart stopped.
Brandon’s face went pale.
“That’s impossible.””
“You signed it,” she said.
“I didn’t.””
“Then someone forged your signature.””
Everyone went quiet.
Vanessa suddenly looked nervous.
My father noticed.
“Vanessa.””
She looked at him.
“Yes?””
“Do you know anything about this transaction?””
“No.””
Too fast.
She answered too fast.
Brandon noticed too.
“Vanessa?””
She stepped back.
“Why are you looking at me like that?””
Nobody spoke.
Then my father’s attorney turned another page.
“There’s one more detail.””
She looked at me.
“The money did not go to Mr. Carter.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“Then where did it go?””
She placed the paper down.
The name was right there.
Vanessa Carter.
My hands went cold.
“Carter?””
I looked at Brandon.
Then at Vanessa.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa’s face lost all color.
Brandon closed his eyes.
“Emily…”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“Why does she have your last name?””
Vanessa looked at Brandon.
“You were supposed to tell her.””
The words felt like a knife.
My father’s voice was low.
“Tell her what?””
Brandon didn’t answer.
Vanessa whispered:
“Tell her the truth.””
The rain continued falling.
Nobody moved.
Then Brandon finally spoke.
“Vanessa is…”
He stopped.
Like saying the words would destroy everything.
My father stepped forward.
“Finish that sentence.””
Brandon looked at me.
And for the first time since I met him, he looked genuinely terrified.
“Vanessa is my wife.””
The world went silent.
I stared at him.
“What?””
Brandon’s breathing became uneven.
“It happened before you.””
My voice barely came out.
“You married me while you were already married?””
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“You don’t understand.””
I looked at her.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I understand perfectly.””
But then the attorney interrupted.
“Mr. Williams.””
My father turned.
“There’s another problem.””
She held up another document.
“A marriage certificate.””
My father frowned.
“For Brandon and Vanessa?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
“It’s not a marriage certificate.””
She looked directly at me.
“It’s a birth certificate.””
My heart began racing.
“What does that have to do with me?””
The attorney slowly placed the paper on the hood of the SUV.
“Because the child listed on this document…”
May you like
She paused.
“…has your husband’s name.””
