Chapter 6: The Secret My Mother Buried

"Brandon, don't.""

My mother's voice trembled.

For the first time that evening, she looked genuinely frightened.

I turned toward her.

"Mom, what is he talking about?""

She looked at my father’s phone.

"Richard, please.""

My father was silent for several seconds.

Then he said, "Margaret, I think it's time.""

My stomach tightened.

"Time for what?""

Brandon stepped backward, adjusting his cuffs.

"Go ahead, Emily. Ask them.""

I looked between my parents.

"Someone needs to explain what's happening.""

My mother took my hand.

"Not here.""

"No. I've spent ten years being told that I don't understand things. I'm not leaving until someone tells me the truth.""

She glanced at Brandon.

He gave a small smile.

"Your husband might have done you a favor tonight.""

I turned toward him.

"Don't pretend you care about me.""

He shrugged.

"I care about what happens to you.""

"Then why did you throw me into a pool?""

He didn't answer.

My father finally spoke.

"Emily, twenty-one years ago, before you met Brandon, our family was involved in a business dispute with a man named Victor Hale.""

The name meant nothing to me.

"Who was he?""

"An investor. He partnered with your uncle Michael on a property development project. The project collapsed after millions of dollars disappeared.""

I frowned.

"Why am I hearing about this now?""

"Because Victor accused our family of taking the money. Michael denied everything. The matter was eventually settled privately.""

My mother squeezed my hand.

"Your father wanted to protect you from it.""

Brandon laughed.

"That's a lovely version.""

My father ignored him.

"Victor had a son. His name was Andrew.""

I looked at Brandon.

His expression had changed.

"Andrew Hale," he said quietly.

I turned back toward my father.

"Was Brandon connected to him?""

Dad paused.

"Yes.""

My mother closed her eyes.

"Brandon's original surname was Hale.""

The world seemed to stop.

I stared at my husband.

"What?""

Brandon looked at me.

For once, he didn't appear amused.

"Before I changed my name, yes.""

"Why?""

He shrugged.

"My father wasn't exactly a popular man.""

"Your father was Victor Hale?""

He nodded.

My mind struggled to connect the pieces.

When Brandon and I met, he'd told me he had grown up with very little. He'd described his father as an absent businessman who had abandoned the family.

He'd said he wanted to build something completely different.

I had believed him.

My father continued.

"After Victor died, Andrew approached Michael. He claimed he wanted to rebuild his father's reputation. Michael introduced him to me as an ambitious young businessman.""

I felt sick.

"Did you know who he was when I met him?""

My mother answered.

"Yes.""

I pulled my hand away.

"You knew?""

She began crying.

"Emily, we didn't know what he intended.""

"But you knew his identity.""

My father spoke carefully.

"At first, I opposed the relationship. I remembered what happened with Victor. But Michael insisted Brandon was different.""

"Then why did you let me marry him?""

My father sighed.

"Because you were in love with him.""

I laughed.

It was a terrible sound.

"So everyone knew except me?""

My mother shook her head.

"We wanted you to have a normal life.""

"A normal life built on a lie?""

Brandon interrupted.

"Your parents are making this sound like some conspiracy.""

I turned toward him.

"Was your marriage to me part of your father's plan?""

His silence answered before he did.

"At first, I wanted to prove I could succeed without him.""

"And later?""

He looked at the pool.

"Later, things changed.""

"What things?""

"Your father invested twelve million dollars in my company. I built it into something valuable. I worked day and night.""

"That's not what I asked.""

He clenched his jaw.

"Later, I realized how much power your family had.""

My eyes filled with tears.

"So you stayed married to me because of the shares?""

He looked away.

"I loved you once.""

That hurt more than I expected.

Not because I believed him.

But because I had spent years believing I was building a marriage with someone who saw me as more than a convenient connection.

My father interrupted.

"Emily, there's one more thing.""

I wiped my cheeks.

"What now?""

"The original twelve-million-dollar investment wasn't simply a business loan.""

Patricia opened another folder.

"Your grandfather established a special investment provision before his death. The money was provided under an agreement that protected the family's voting rights and required full disclosure of any related-party transactions.""

I frowned.

"Why does that matter?""

Patricia placed a document in front of me.

"Because Brandon's company has repeatedly violated that agreement.""

She pointed to a paragraph.

"Under the original terms, undisclosed transfers to personal accounts, fraudulent shareholder documents, or deliberate concealment of company assets can trigger an immediate review of the management agreement.""

Thomas Whitaker leaned forward.

"And if the violations are confirmed, the board can terminate the CEO's appointment without waiting for the next annual meeting.""

Brandon stared at the paper.

"You can't use a twenty-year-old agreement against me.""

Patricia replied calmly.

"It's the agreement your company was built upon.""

Then she opened another document.

"This is the part you should be concerned about.""

She showed me a bank authorization record.

The name at the bottom wasn't Brandon's.

It wasn't Vanessa's.

It was mine.

I stared at it.

"What is that?""

Patricia explained.

"An account authorization filed six months ago. Someone attempted to move the company's remaining reserve funds into a private holding account.""

I felt my stomach turn.

"How much?""

"Eleven million dollars.""

My father spoke through the phone.

"The transaction was stopped before completion.""

I looked at Brandon.

"Who authorized it?""

He said nothing.

Patricia enlarged the document.

The authorization had been submitted using my name, my identification details, and a digital certificate linked to my personal financial adviser.

Then I noticed something else.

The account wasn't registered to Vanessa.

It wasn't registered to Michael.

It belonged to a company called Carter Legacy Holdings.

My grandfather had created that company before I was born.

And it had been dormant for twenty-five years.

I looked at my father.

"Who controls that account?""

He answered slowly.

"Nobody should. It was supposed to have been dissolved.""

My mother suddenly covered her mouth.

Then Brandon smiled.

A small, confident smile that made my blood run cold.

"Well," he said, "I suppose it's time you learned what your grandfather really left behind.""

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

"Because that eleven-million-dollar account isn't the only thing your family forgot to tell you.""

He placed the paper on the table.

At the top was my grandfather's name.

At the bottom was a handwritten instruction dated three weeks before his death.

And the person named as the sole beneficiary wasn't my father.

It was me.
