Chapter 5: The Marriage Was Part of the Plan

The first person to approach us was a woman named Patricia Morgan.

She was my father's senior attorney and had handled the Carter family trust since before Brandon started his company.

She carried a locked document case.

Behind her walked two other attorneys and a security officer.

"Richard asked us to secure all relevant documents," Patricia announced.

Michael immediately stepped forward.

"Patricia, this is unnecessary.""

She didn't even look at him.

"Then you shouldn't have brought unauthorized trust documents onto private property.""

She opened her case and removed several sealed envelopes.

"Emily, I need you to confirm that you did not sign a shareholder consent form transferring the family's voting rights.""

"I didn't.""

"Did you authorize anyone to sign on your behalf?""

"No.""

"Did you authorize a payment of two million, eight hundred thousand dollars to Vanessa Reed?""

"No.""

Patricia nodded.

"Thank you.""

She turned toward Michael.

"Mr. Carter, I need you to surrender the documents in your briefcase.""

Michael laughed.

"On whose authority?""

"On the authority of the trust's current trustees.""

He looked toward the phone.

"Richard, this is getting out of hand.""

My father answered immediately.

"Then hand over the documents.""

Michael didn't move.

Patricia turned toward the security officer.

"Please secure the briefcase.""

The officer stepped forward.

Michael reluctantly released it.

Brandon paced near the pool.

"This is insane. You're destroying a company over a paperwork issue.""

Thomas Whitaker crossed his arms.

"Two million, eight hundred thousand dollars isn't a paperwork issue.""

Brandon pointed at him.

"That money was part of an approved consulting arrangement.""

"Approved by whom?""

Brandon didn't answer.

Patricia removed a tablet from her case.

"Our preliminary review shows the receiving account was opened approximately eight months ago. It received payments from multiple company accounts.""

Vanessa began shaking.

"Those payments were legitimate.""

Daniel turned toward her.

"Then why did you tell me the money was for a property investment?""

She stared at him.

"I was going to explain.""

"When? After you bought the house?""

Vanessa looked away.

I watched her carefully.

"Did Brandon promise to leave me?""

She hesitated.

Brandon immediately interrupted.

"Emily, don't do this.""

I kept my eyes on Vanessa.

"Did he?""

She swallowed.

"Yes.""

The answer was so quiet that I almost missed it.

My chest tightened.

"When?""

"Last spring.""

I looked at Brandon.

He stared at the ground.

Vanessa continued.

"He said the marriage was only a business arrangement. He said your father controlled everything and that you were never really involved in the company.""

I felt something inside me crack.

"Ten years, Brandon.""

He finally looked up.

"What?""

"Ten years of marriage. And you described it as a business arrangement?""

He rubbed his forehead.

"Emily, things were complicated.""

"Did you promise to marry her?""

Vanessa nodded.

"He said once the shares were transferred, we'd be free to start over.""

Daniel laughed.

"Start over with stolen money?""

"Shut up, Daniel!""

"No. You don't get to tell me to shut up.""

He held up his phone.

"I have the recording, the messages, and the bank statements. You told me you were building a future for us.""

Vanessa began crying harder.

"I loved you.""

Daniel looked at her for a long moment.

"Then you should have stopped lying.""

Patricia interrupted.

"There's another issue.""

She turned the tablet toward me.

"Emily, the first suspicious transfer occurred eight months ago. That was also when the forged shareholder documents were first drafted.""

I looked at the dates.

Eight months.

That was when Brandon had started insisting I sign routine household and investment paperwork without reading every page.

He'd said it was more convenient.

He'd even joked that my signature was becoming his favorite part of our marriage.

I remembered one particular evening.

We'd been sitting in our bedroom.

Brandon had placed a stack of papers beside my jewelry box.

"Just sign these, sweetheart. They're standard administrative documents.""

I'd been tired.

I'd signed two pages before noticing a reference to the family trust.

I had refused to continue.

Brandon had become irritated.

"Why do you always make everything difficult?""

I'd handed the papers back.

Now Patricia was examining the forged document on her tablet.

"Emily, the signature sample appears to have been taken from an older document in your personal financial records.""

My eyes widened.

"Who had access to those?""

Patricia looked toward Michael.

"Your financial adviser and the trust administrator.""

My uncle laughed bitterly.

"This is all circumstantial.""

Patricia opened another file.

"Actually, we have something more concrete.""

She placed a printed email on the table.

The sender was Michael.

The recipient was Brandon.

The subject line read: Final Steps Before Shareholder Conversion.

I read the first few lines.

Michael had written that the trust's voting rights could be transferred through a consent form if the witness documentation was completed correctly.

Brandon had replied with one sentence.

What about Emily?

Michael's answer made my hands go cold.

She'll sign whatever you put in front of her if you make it look like routine paperwork.

I looked at my husband.

He didn't deny it.

Instead, he turned toward me.

"Emily, listen. I was trying to protect the company.""

"From whom?""

"Your father. He was always interfering.""

"So you stole from the company, forged my signature, and planned to remove my family's control?""

Brandon stepped closer.

"I built that company!""

My father answered through the phone.

"You built a management team with money you didn't provide.""

Brandon's eyes flashed.

"I made it successful!""

"And you were compensated generously for doing so.""

Patricia closed the folder.

"The board will convene an emergency meeting Monday morning. Until then, Brandon's authority over financial accounts will be suspended pending investigation.""

Brandon stared at her.

"You can't do that.""

"We can. The trust controls seventy-five percent of the voting rights.""

He looked at me.

"Emily, you're really going to let them do this?""

I didn't answer.

Then he leaned closer and lowered his voice.

"You think your father will protect you forever? You have no idea what I know about your family.""

I frowned.

"What does that mean?""

He smiled.

It wasn't his usual confident smile.

It was something darker.

"Ask your mother why she never wanted you to marry me.""

I turned.

My mother had gone completely still.

And when I looked into her eyes, I realized Brandon hadn't made that threat randomly.

May you like

She knew something.

Something she had kept from me for ten years.
