Chapter 11: My Grandfather Knew Who Would Betray Me
My grandfather's letter was six pages long.
The handwriting was slightly uneven, but I recognized every curve.
I sat in his old leather chair and began reading aloud.
My dearest Emily,
If you are reading this, I hope it means you are old enough to understand why I made certain decisions.
There are people who believe family is defined by blood. I believe family is defined by loyalty, honesty, and the willingness to protect someone even when doing so costs you something.
I paused.
My father stood behind me.
Patricia was examining the photograph of Brandon and Michael.
I continued.
Twenty-five years ago, your uncle Michael and a man named Victor Hale entered into a business partnership. They were supposed to develop several commercial properties. Instead, money disappeared, contracts were altered, and innocent investors lost their savings.
My father lowered his head.
"I remember.""
I continued reading.
Victor was not innocent. But Michael was not the victim he claimed to be.
The room became silent.
I discovered that Michael had secretly transferred money from the partnership into accounts controlled by him. When Victor confronted him, Michael blamed everything on Victor.
I looked up.
"Did you know about this, Dad?""
He nodded slowly.
"Your grandfather told me shortly before he died.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"I was trying to protect you.""
I looked back at the letter.
I was able to recover most of the money. However, I discovered that Michael had created another company using the Carter family name. I feared he would eventually attempt to use our family's reputation to hide his activities.
The next paragraph made my blood run cold.
There is one person who may eventually become involved in this scheme. Victor's son, Andrew.
I stopped reading.
Brandon.
My grandfather had written his name before I had even met him.
I continued.
If Andrew Hale approaches you, remember that he is not responsible for every mistake his father made. But never allow him access to your inheritance.
I looked at Patricia.
She had gone very still.
"There's more," she said.
I continued.
Michael has already suggested that Andrew should be introduced to Emily when she is older. He believes a marriage between the families could restore what was lost.
My father closed his eyes.
I felt sick.
"So they planned this?""
Dad spoke quietly.
"Your grandfather suspected it. He didn't have enough evidence to prove Michael was arranging anything.""
I continued reading.
I have established Carter Legacy Holdings in Emily's name. It contains the assets I recovered from the original partnership, along with additional investments I made over the years.
Michael is permitted to administer certain responsibilities, but he has no authority to transfer ownership.
If he attempts to do so, the independent trustees must immediately activate the protective clause.
I looked at Patricia.
"What's the protective clause?""
She held out her hand.
"May I?""
I passed her the document.
She read the final page twice.
Then she looked at my father.
"Richard, this is significant.""
"What?""
"The protective clause names an independent corporate guardian who assumes temporary authority if the trustees are suspected of fraud.""
"Who?""
Patricia pointed to the signature.
"Your grandfather appointed a man named Samuel Brooks.""
My father frowned.
"Samuel?""
I remembered the name.
Samuel Brooks had been my grandfather's closest business associate. He'd moved to London after my grandfather died and had rarely returned to the United States.
"Is he still alive?"" I asked.
Patricia checked the document.
"According to our records, yes. He's eighty-three and currently resides in Charleston.""
My father stared at the page.
"Then Michael has no control over the protective clause.""
Patricia shook her head.
"Not if the document is valid.""
A loud crash came from the hallway.
We turned.
Michael had knocked a small table over.
He stood near the door, his face red.
"That letter is irrelevant.""
Patricia closed the folder.
"Mr. Carter, you need to stop interfering with the evidence.""
Michael pointed at my father.
"You don't understand what your father did! He left me to clean up the mess!""
My father stood.
"Then why did you steal from him?""
Michael laughed bitterly.
"Because I was owed something!""
"You were paid.""
"Not enough!""
My father shook his head.
"You had a family. You had a business. You had everything.""
Michael's voice rose.
"And you had Emily! The golden child! Everything was always going to her!""
I stared at him.
"So you tried to take my inheritance?""
He looked at me.
"Your grandfather made a mistake.""
"No. He made a decision.""
Michael stepped closer.
"That money should have been divided among the family.""
"Then why didn't you ask?""
He laughed.
"Because your father would never have agreed.""
Patricia interrupted.
"That's enough. The investigators are waiting outside.""
Michael suddenly turned toward the front door.
But the security officer blocked his path.
For the first time, my uncle looked trapped.
Then his expression changed.
"Fine. You want the truth? Ask Charles Bennett why your grandfather changed the original beneficiary documents.""
My father froze.
"Charles?""
Michael smiled.
"Your precious attorney has been hiding something for decades.""
Patricia looked at me.
"Emily, we need to contact him.""
My phone vibrated.
An email had arrived from an unfamiliar address.
The subject line read:
Proof of the original agreement.
There was one attachment.
A scanned document dated twenty-five years earlier.
At the bottom were three signatures.
My grandfather's.
Michael's.
And Charles Bennett's.
But it was the fourth name on the page that made my blood turn cold.
Victor Hale.
Beneath his signature was a statement acknowledging that he had transferred his entire ownership interest in Carter Legacy Holdings to someone else.
Someone who wasn't my grandfather.
Someone who wasn't Michael.
The recipient was Andrew Hale.
My husband had inherited part of the company before we ever met.
I looked at the date again.
The agreement had been signed three weeks before Victor died.
And suddenly, I understood why Brandon had been so determined to marry me.
May you like
He hadn't simply wanted my family's money.
He wanted to reclaim something he believed already belonged to him.
