Chapter 12: The Man Who Owned Half the Secret
The document was still on the screen when Patricia received a call.
She listened for nearly a minute, then turned toward my father.
"Richard, Samuel Brooks has agreed to speak with us.""
My father frowned.
"Tonight?""
"He says it's urgent.""
I looked at the scanned agreement.
"Ask him about Andrew Hale.""
Patricia nodded.
She returned to the call.
A few minutes later, a video link arrived.
Samuel Brooks appeared on the screen wearing a dark cardigan. His silver hair was neatly combed, and his expression was serious.
"Richard Carter," he said.
My father leaned toward the laptop.
"Samuel. It's been a long time.""
"Too long. I wish we were speaking under better circumstances.""
Samuel looked at me.
"And this must be Emily.""
I nodded.
"Yes, sir.""
He studied my face for a moment.
"You look very much like your grandfather.""
I swallowed.
"Did you know he left me Carter Legacy Holdings?""
"Of course. I was one of the people who helped him establish it.""
"Then why does this document say Andrew Hale owned part of it?""
Samuel removed his glasses.
"Because he did.""
My father stared at him.
"What?""
Samuel nodded.
"Twenty-five years ago, Victor Hale transferred a minority ownership interest into the company. It was part of an agreement designed to compensate investors after the failed property development.""
I frowned.
"How much?""
"Thirty percent.""
The room fell silent.
Thirty percent.
Brandon's father had owned thirty percent of the company that my grandfather had built.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?"" I asked.
Samuel sighed.
"Because the interest was placed under a separate holding structure. Victor's son was the beneficiary, but the rights were subject to strict conditions.""
"What conditions?""
"Andrew had to prove that he had no involvement in the original fraud, and he could never use the interest to obtain control over the Carter family assets.""
I looked toward the photograph of Brandon and Michael.
"Did he know about it?""
"Yes.""
"How?""
Samuel hesitated.
"Your uncle Michael told him.""
My father rubbed his forehead.
"Michael knew about the original arrangement?""
"Michael was involved in creating it.""
I turned toward my uncle.
He was sitting near the hallway with an investigator standing beside him.
"Why would you give Brandon information about his father's inheritance?""
Michael didn't answer.
Samuel continued.
"Because Michael believed he could use Andrew's ownership interest to challenge the Carter family's control.""
Patricia leaned forward.
"Can the thirty percent be transferred?""
"Not without approval from the independent trustees.""
"Who are the trustees?""
Samuel looked at me.
"Your grandfather, before his death, appointed himself, Richard, and me to oversee the arrangement. After his death, I remained as the independent guardian.""
My father looked confused.
"Then why did Michael tell us the structure had been dissolved?""
Samuel's expression hardened.
"Because it wasn't.""
He paused.
"Richard, your brother has been submitting false annual reports for years.""
My father closed his eyes.
"How much?""
"I don't know the full amount yet. But the last legitimate financial statement showed that the holding company had assets exceeding one hundred million dollars.""
I felt my breath catch.
"One hundred million?""
Samuel nodded.
"Your grandfather continued investing the recovered funds. The property portfolio grew substantially over the years.""
I looked at Patricia.
"Does that mean Brandon can claim thirty percent?""
"Not automatically," Samuel replied.
He adjusted his glasses.
"Victor's agreement included a clause that prohibited his son from claiming the interest if he attempted to obtain control through marriage, fraud, or coercion.""
I looked down.
The words from my grandfather's letter returned to me.
Never allow him access to your inheritance.
"Then Brandon has lost his claim?""
Samuel hesitated.
"Not necessarily.""
My father frowned.
"What do you mean?""
Samuel opened a file.
"Three months ago, someone submitted an application claiming that Andrew Hale had fulfilled the conditions for the thirty-percent transfer.""
Patricia sat upright.
"Who submitted it?""
Samuel looked directly at Michael.
"Michael Carter.""
I felt sick.
"And who approved it?""
Samuel's expression changed.
"Charles Bennett.""
My father stood.
"Charles knew?""
"Yes.""
"Then why did he tell me the company had been dissolved?""
Samuel shook his head.
"Because he was trying to hide the transfer.""
I looked at the screen.
"Can the approval be reversed?""
"Yes, if we prove that the application was fraudulent.""
Patricia nodded.
"We have the forged shareholder documents, the bank transfers, and the emails.""
Samuel looked at me.
"There's one more thing you need to know.""
I leaned closer.
"What?""
"The thirty-percent interest was not the only asset Victor Hale transferred.""
He opened another document.
"Victor also transferred a substantial amount of money into a separate account. The account was intended to provide financial security for his son.""
My father frowned.
"How much?""
"Approximately twenty-two million dollars.""
I looked at the document.
The account number was familiar.
It matched the overseas holding company Vanessa had shown me.
I felt my pulse quicken.
"That's the eleven-million-dollar account?""
Samuel nodded.
"Part of it. The remaining funds were distributed through several accounts over the years.""
Patricia looked at the bank statements.
"Then the eleven million may not belong to Carter Legacy Holdings at all.""
"Correct," Samuel replied.
I looked at my father.
"Then why was Brandon trying to move it using my signature?""
Dad stared at the screen.
"Because he needed to make it look as though the transfer was authorized by the current beneficiary.""
Samuel nodded.
"And because he wanted to activate a clause in the original agreement.""
I swallowed.
"What clause?""
Samuel looked directly at me.
"If Emily authorized the transfer of those funds to Andrew Hale, the remaining thirty-percent interest would automatically become his.""
The room went silent.
Brandon hadn't simply been stealing money.
He had been trying to force me to sign away the last legal obstacle to his father's inheritance.
And he'd been doing it while pretending to be my husband.
My father slowly sat down.
"Samuel, can you stop the transfer?""
"I can suspend the application. But I need the original documents.""
Patricia opened her folder.
"We have copies.""
"I need the originals.""
I looked toward the document case.
Michael's face had gone pale.
Then Samuel said something that made everyone turn toward him.
"There's another problem. The original agreement was signed by four people, but the version you have is missing an amendment.""
"What amendment?"" I asked.
Samuel took a breath.
"Victor Hale changed the beneficiary of his twenty-two-million-dollar account shortly before his death.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"To whom?""
Samuel looked directly into the camera.
"To his son's future wife.""
Nobody spoke.
I stared at the screen.
"His future wife?""
Samuel nodded.
"Victor believed Andrew would eventually marry into the Carter family. He wanted the money protected until that happened.""
My father stood abruptly.
"That's impossible.""
Samuel looked at him.
"I'm afraid not, Richard.""
I felt the room spinning.
Then Samuel opened the final page.
The beneficiary's name was printed clearly.
*Emily Margaret Carter.*
I stared at it.
My grandfather had left me one fortune.
Victor Hale had left me another.
And Brandon had apparently spent ten years trying to take both.
My phone rang.
Patricia glanced at the screen.
It was the company's board secretary.
She answered.
Her expression changed almost immediately.
"What do you mean he has already entered the building?""
She listened.
Then she looked at me.
"Emily, Brandon is at the company's headquarters.""
I stood.
"What is he doing there?""
Patricia slowly lowered the phone.
"He's called an emergency shareholder meeting.""
My father frowned.
"How? His authority was suspended.""
Patricia looked at the final document on the screen.
Then she whispered:
May you like
"He's claiming to own thirty percent of the company.""
And according to the paperwork he'd just filed, he had already appointed himself chairman.
