Chapter 7: The Father I Was Never Allowed to Know

The man standing in my doorway looked nothing like the ghost I had imagined for twenty years.

I had pictured a photograph.

A memory.

A story.

Not a living person standing in front of me with tired eyes and trembling hands.

My father looked at me like he was afraid I would disappear.

“Claire,” he whispered.

I couldn’t answer.

There were too many emotions fighting at once.

Anger.

Confusion.

Relief.

Betrayal.

I wanted to run toward him.

I wanted to ask why he left.

I wanted to scream because he didn’t.

Instead, I stood there frozen.

Ethan cleared his throat.

“I thought she deserved the truth.””

I turned toward him.

The words sounded wrong coming from him.

“You?””

My voice was cold.

“You thought I deserved the truth?””

His face tightened.

“Yes.””

“After you searched my grandmother’s files?””

“I was trying to understand.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You were trying to find something.””

My father looked at Ethan.

And the expression on his face changed.

Recognition.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“You’re Richard Morgan’s son.””

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“So you remember.””

My father’s eyes darkened.

“I remember everything.””

The room became silent.

Diane suddenly stood.

“Everyone needs to calm down.””

I looked at her.

“No.””

The word came out sharper than I expected.

“Not this time.””

She stopped.

I pointed toward the room.

“Everyone here knew something about my life except me.””

Nobody argued.

Because it was true.

My father slowly stepped inside.

Rebecca closed the door behind him.

For the first time in years, I saw Diane look small.

Not powerful.

Not controlling.

Small.

My father looked at me.

“I owe you an explanation.””

I crossed my arms.

“Yes.””

My voice shook.

“You do.””

He nodded.

“I never wanted to leave you.””

Those words hurt more than I expected.

Because some part of me had spent my whole life waiting to hear them.

“Then why did you?””

He looked down.

“Because I found out what Ethan’s grandfather was planning.””

I frowned.

“His grandfather?””

“Yes.””

He glanced at Ethan.

“The Morgan family and the Callahan family were connected through business for decades.””

Ethan looked away.

“My father told me those records were old.””

My father ignored him.

“They weren’t just business records.””

He walked toward the table.

Rebecca handed him the documents.

He looked through them.

“Your grandmother discovered that Richard Callahan was trying to gain control of the Morgan Trust.””

I stared.

“Why?””

“Because the trust held something valuable.””

“Money?””

My father shook his head.

“No.””

The answer surprised me.

“Then what?””

He looked at me.

“Ownership.””

I didn’t understand.

He continued.

“Your grandmother’s trust was connected to a company your family built before you were born. The money was only one part. The real value was the control.””

Rebecca nodded.

“Claire’s grandmother structured everything so no outsider could take control.””

I looked at Ethan.

“And he knew?””

My father’s expression hardened.

“His family spent years searching for a weakness.””

Ethan suddenly stepped forward.

“That’s not fair.””

Everyone looked at him.

He laughed bitterly.

“You’re making me sound like some kind of villain.””

I stared at him.

“Did you or did you not search my private files?””

He said nothing.

“Did you or did you not try to control my money?””

Still nothing.

My father looked disappointed.

“That’s exactly what I feared.””

Ethan’s face changed.

“You don’t know me.””

“No.””

My father looked directly at him.

“But I know your family.””

The tension became unbearable.

Then Diane spoke quietly.

“I never wanted this.””

I turned.

“What does that mean?””

She looked at me.

For once, she wasn’t arrogant.

She looked exhausted.

“I knew Ethan was interested in the trust.””

My heart sank.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“And you helped him?””

She looked away.

“I thought he was just trying to protect our future.””

I laughed.

“Our future?””

I pointed at my broken phone.

“This was your idea of protecting the future?””

Diane had no answer.

Ethan suddenly grabbed his coat.

“I’m done.””

He moved toward the door.

But my father spoke.

“Running won’t fix what you did.””

Ethan stopped.

My father’s voice became quieter.

“Especially because there is one thing you still don’t know.””

Ethan turned.

“What?””

My father looked at me.

Then at Rebecca.

“The trust was never just designed to protect Claire’s inheritance.””

A chill went through me.

“What else?””

My father stared at Ethan.

“It was designed to reveal anyone who tried to take it.””

Ethan’s expression changed.

“What does that mean?””

Rebecca opened her folder.

“It means the trust recorded every unauthorized attempt.””

She pulled out a document.

“And we just received the complete report.””

Ethan stared at it.

My father whispered,

“Your husband didn’t just search for the trust.””

He looked at me.

“He found someone who helped him.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Rebecca looked down at the report.

Then slowly lifted her eyes.

“The person who gave Ethan access information…”

May you like

She paused.

“…was someone inside your own family.””
