Chapter 13: The Man Who Was Never Dead
I stared at the message until the words blurred.
I’m sorry I stayed dead for so long, Claire.
My fingers went cold around my phone.
For twenty years, I had lived with a story.
My uncle was gone.
My father abandoned us.
My grandmother protected me.
Ethan loved me.
One by one, every truth I believed had collapsed.
And now another impossible piece had appeared.
My uncle was alive.
“Claire?”” Rebecca asked.
I didn’t answer.
I just handed her the phone.
She read the message.
Then looked at my father.
“He’s alive.””
My father closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
The word was quiet.
Almost defeated.
I looked at him.
“You knew?””
His face tightened.
“I suspected.””
“Suspected?””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone in my life seems to suspect things except me.””
My father looked away.
“I thought keeping you away from this world would keep you safe.””
“But you didn’t keep me safe.””
My voice cracked.
“You left me believing I wasn’t worth staying for.””
The pain on his face was immediate.
And for the first time, I saw the damage my missing father had carried too.
“I wanted to come back.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
He looked at the floor.
“Because every time I tried, someone stopped me.””
The room went silent.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then Ethan spoke.
“My father.””
I turned toward him.
He looked exhausted.
Broken.
But I couldn’t forget what he had done.
“You knew about my uncle.””
Ethan swallowed.
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Before we got married.””
The answer hurt even though I expected it.
“How?””
He looked at the ground.
“My father kept records.””
“Records of what?””
“Everyone connected to the Morgan family.””
Victoria crossed her arms.
“That’s what Richard did.””
She looked at me.
“He collected information. Secrets. Weaknesses.””
I looked at Ethan.
“And you inherited that.””
His face changed.
“I didn’t want to become him.””
“But you did.””
The words were quiet.
They didn’t need to be loud.
They were true.
Ethan closed his eyes.
“I know.””
That was the first honest thing he had said all night.
Rebecca’s phone suddenly rang.
She answered quickly.
“Hello?””
She listened.
Then her expression changed.
“What?””
Everyone looked at her.
She ended the call.
“That was the security company.””
“What happened?”” I asked.
“They found someone inside the Morgan office.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
Rebecca hesitated.
Then:
“Your uncle.””
Nobody moved.
“He’s there?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Rebecca looked at me.
“Because he left a message.””
“What message?””
She opened her phone.
A video file appeared.
Recorded inside my grandmother’s old office.
The screen showed shelves.
Documents.
The same place Ethan had searched.
Then a man stepped into view.
Older than I remembered.
But familiar.
My uncle.
He looked directly into the camera.
“Claire.””
My breath caught.
His voice was different from the one I remembered.
Older.
Tired.
“I know you hate me.””
I couldn’t deny it.
“I deserve that.””
He looked down.
“But before you decide what I am, you need to know why I disappeared.””
The video continued.
“Richard Morgan did not want the trust.””
My father frowned.
“What?””
My uncle continued.
“He wanted something hidden inside the trust.””
Rebecca leaned closer.
“What hidden thing?””
The video showed him holding a small black folder.
“The original agreement.””
I looked at the screen.
“But we already have the agreement.””
My uncle shook his head.
“No.””
He looked directly into the camera.
“The document everyone has been fighting over is a copy.””
Everyone froze.
“The real agreement was hidden because your grandmother discovered the truth.””
The room became silent.
“What truth?”” I whispered.
My uncle’s expression became serious.
“Richard Morgan was never trying to steal the company.””
A pause.
“He was trying to hide that he had already stolen it.””
Ethan stepped back.
“No.””
My uncle continued.
“Your husband’s father destroyed the original ownership records and blamed my family.””
Victoria looked stunned.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
The video ended.
The room remained silent.
Then Ethan whispered,
“My father lied to me.””
I looked at him.
And for the first time, I realized something.
Ethan wasn’t only the person who betrayed me.
He was also someone who had been controlled by the same family secrets.
But that didn’t erase what he had done.
Rebecca picked up her coat.
“We need to find your uncle.””
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because he has the original agreement.””
“And?””
Her expression became serious.
“And whoever controls that document controls the truth.””
My phone buzzed again.
Another message.
From my uncle.
“Come alone.””
Then another line appeared.
“Because Ethan is not the only person who has been lying to you.””
I looked up.
Everyone was watching me.
And suddenly I knew.
May you like
The biggest secret had not been revealed yet.
It was waiting.
