Chapter 12: The Truth Ethan Buried

The name stayed in the air.

Ethan’s father.

Richard Morgan.

A man I had heard about countless times.

A man Ethan always described as a hardworking businessman.

A man who died before I knew him.

But now everyone looked at his name like it carried a warning.

“No,” Ethan said quietly.

Victoria turned toward him.

“Yes.””

“That’s not true.””

“You know it is.””

Ethan shook his head.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Victoria laughed.

“You’re still protecting him.””

I looked at Ethan.

“Why?””

He looked at me.

“Claire…”

“Why are you protecting a man who is dead?””

He had no answer.

My father slowly sat down.

“He knew.””

I turned.

“What?””

My father looked at Ethan.

“He knew what his father did.””

Ethan’s face changed.

“Stop.””

My father continued.

“He knew the truth before he met Claire.””

My heart sank.

“Ethan?””

He looked away.

And that was the final answer.

I felt something inside me go numb.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Just emptiness.

“How much?””

Ethan whispered,

“How much what?””

“How much did you know?””

He didn’t speak.

I stepped closer.

“How much did you know about my family?””

His voice was barely audible.

“Enough.””

That one word destroyed whatever was left.

“Enough.””

I repeated it.

“You knew enough to investigate me.””

“Yes.””

“You knew enough to hide things.””

“Yes.””

“You knew enough to marry me.””

His eyes filled with regret.

But regret was too late.

“I didn’t plan for this.””

I stared.

“That’s your defense?””

“No.””

“Then what is?””

He looked at me.

“I fell in love with you.””

The room became silent.

And for one second, I wanted to believe him.

Because that was the cruelest part.

I had loved him.

A part of me still did.

But love without honesty was just another kind of betrayal.

“You fell in love with someone you were investigating.””

Ethan looked down.

“I made mistakes.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You made choices.””

Victoria stepped forward.

“Claire, your grandmother knew this day might come.””

She reached into her bag.

Another envelope.

Another secret.

I almost laughed.

How many more hidden pieces of my life existed?

“She left this for you.””

I didn’t take it.

“Why?””

“Because she knew you would need to choose.””

“Choose what?””

Victoria looked at Ethan.

“Whether to protect the man you married…”

Then she looked at me.

“…or expose the man he became.””

I slowly accepted the envelope.

Inside was a single page.

My grandmother’s handwriting.

Again.

This time, only a few lines.

“Claire,

If you are reading this, then the truth has finally reached you.

Do not judge Ethan by his father’s sins.

But do not forgive him for his own choices.””

I stopped.

My hands trembled.

The next sentence hurt more.

“Love does not require you to ignore betrayal.””

I looked at Ethan.

He was crying silently.

For the first time, I saw the man I thought I married.

Not the liar.

Not the manipulator.

The person underneath.

But I didn’t know if that person still existed.

Rebecca looked at the final page.

“There’s something else.””

I looked up.

“What?””

She pointed to the bottom.

A date.

A recent date.

“This letter was updated six months ago.””

I froze.

“My grandmother has been dead for five years.””

Rebecca nodded.

“I know.””

“Then how?””

Nobody answered.

Then my father noticed something.

A small mark.

A signature.

He picked up the page.

His face changed.

“Claire…”

“What?””

He looked at me.

“This isn’t your grandmother’s final message.””

My heart stopped.

“Then whose is it?””

My father turned the paper over.

On the back was a name.

A name written in fresh ink.

A name that shouldn’t have been there.

“Your uncle.””

I stared.

Impossible.

Then my phone buzzed.

A new message appeared.

From an unknown number.

One sentence.

“I’m sorry I stayed dead for so long, Claire.””

My blood turned cold.

The next message arrived.

“Your husband didn’t find me.””

A pause.

May you like

Then:

“I found him first.””
