Chapter 10: The Stranger in the Dark
The darkness came suddenly.
One second, the house was filled with voices.
The next, everything disappeared.
No lights.
No sound.
Only silence.
The kind of silence that makes you realize how vulnerable you really are.
“Everyone stay where you are,” Rebecca said.
Her voice was calm, but I heard the tension underneath.
My hands tightened around the letter.
I couldn’t see Ethan.
I couldn’t see my father.
I couldn’t see anyone.
Then something crashed downstairs.
A loud, violent sound.
Like someone had forced their way inside.
Diane gasped.
“Someone is in the house.””
My heart started racing.
Rebecca turned on her phone flashlight.
A small beam cut through the darkness.
“Claire, stay behind me.””
I wanted to argue.
But for once, I listened.
Because suddenly this wasn’t about money.
It wasn’t about a marriage falling apart.
Someone had entered my home.
Someone who knew about the trust.
Someone who knew about the secrets my grandmother buried.
The flashlight moved across the room.
Then stopped.
The front door was open.
The stranger who had given me the envelope was gone.
“Where did he go?”” my father asked.
Nobody answered.
Because nobody knew.
Ethan finally spoke.
“He’s not the problem.””
I turned toward his voice.
“What?””
The flashlight moved to him.
His face was tense.
“He wasn’t here to hurt you.””
I stared at him.
“How would you know?””
Silence.
A terrible silence.
Rebecca looked at Ethan.
“You know who he is.””
Ethan looked away.
That was enough.
“You know him,” I said.
“No.””
“You do.””
He rubbed his forehead.
“Claire…”
“Stop saying my name like that.””
My voice cracked.
“Every time you say my name, it sounds like you’re about to lie.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Rebecca’s phone buzzed.
She looked down.
Her expression changed.
“What?””
My father stepped closer.
“What is it?””
Rebecca turned the screen toward us.
“It’s a security alert.””
“From where?””
She looked at me.
“Your grandmother’s old office.””
My stomach dropped.
“My office?””
“Yes.””
“But nobody is there.””
Rebecca’s face became serious.
“That’s why it’s strange.””
“What do you mean?””
She showed me the notification.
“Someone opened the locked archive.””
The same archive where the original trust files had been stored.
The same files Ethan had tried to take.
I looked at him.
“You didn’t do it?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
For the first time all night, I believed him.
Not because I trusted him.
Because his fear looked real.
Rebecca grabbed her coat.
“We need to go.””
My father stopped her.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
“This is exactly what they want.””
“Who?”” I asked.
He looked at the darkness outside.
“The people who have been waiting for Claire to find out the truth.””
A chill went through me.
“Who are they?””
My father didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said,
“The people who destroyed our family the first time.””
Nobody moved.
Because suddenly, my grandmother’s warnings made sense.
She wasn’t protecting money.
She was protecting me from a war that started before I was born.
Ethan stepped forward.
“I need to tell you something.””
I looked at him.
“What now?””
His face was filled with regret.
“I wasn’t the only person looking for the trust.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
He looked at Rebecca.
Then my father.
Then me.
“Someone approached me months ago.””
“Who?””
He swallowed.
“Your uncle.””
The room froze.
Again.
Another impossible thing.
“My uncle is dead.””
“I know.””
“Then who approached you?””
Ethan looked down.
“I don’t know.””
That answer made no sense.
“You don’t know?””
“He used your uncle’s name. He had documents. Proof.””
My father whispered,
“Forgery.””
Ethan nodded.
“I thought he could help me access the trust.””
My anger returned.
“So you made a deal with someone you didn’t even know?””
“I thought I was protecting our future.””
I laughed.
A broken laugh.
“You keep using that word.””
“What word?””
“Future.””
I looked at him.
“You destroyed our present while chasing one.””
Before Ethan could answer, another sound came.
A vehicle outside.
Everyone turned.
The headlights swept across the windows.
Someone was approaching.
Rebecca moved toward the side of the room.
“Everyone stay back.””
The front door opened.
A woman stepped inside.
Older.
Elegant.
Confident.
She looked around the room.
Then her eyes landed on me.
“Claire Morgan.””
Nobody knew what to say.
The woman smiled faintly.
“I’ve been waiting a long time to meet you.””
My father stepped in front of me.
“Who are you?””
The woman ignored him.
She looked directly at me.
“My name is Victoria Callahan.””
Ethan went pale.
Because he knew that name.
And when my father heard it, his face changed completely.
“No.””
Victoria smiled.
“Yes.””
She looked at me.
“I’m the daughter of the man your grandmother spent her life trying to stop.””
The room went silent.
May you like
Then she said the words that made my blood freeze.
“And I’m here to collect what your family stole from mine.””
