Chapter 11: The Enemy My Grandmother Feared

Victoria Callahan stood in the center of my living room like she owned it.

Like she had walked into my home many times before.

The confidence was familiar.

Too familiar.

It reminded me of Diane.

But there was something different about Victoria.

Diane wanted control.

Victoria wanted revenge.

My father stepped forward.

“You need to leave.””

Victoria smiled.

“Still protecting the Morgan family, Daniel?””

I froze.

Daniel.

My father’s name.

A name I had barely heard spoken.

“You know who I am,” he said.

“Of course.””

She looked around.

“Your disappearance caused my family a lot of trouble.””

I stared at my father.

“You knew her?””

He didn’t answer.

That was becoming the answer I hated most.

Everyone knew.

Everyone except me.

Victoria looked at me.

“Your father spent twenty years hiding because he knew the truth.””

“What truth?””

She smiled.

“The truth your grandmother buried.””

Rebecca moved closer.

“Victoria, whatever you think happened, this is not the way.””

Victoria laughed softly.

“Not the way?””

She looked at Rebecca.

“You work for Claire’s family. Of course you would say that.””

I stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Everyone turned.

I was tired.

Tired of being the last person to know my own story.

“Tell me.””

Victoria looked pleased.

“Finally.””

I pointed at her.

“But you tell me the truth.””

She nodded.

“Your grandmother took something from my family.””

My father immediately said,

“That’s a lie.””

Victoria’s eyes sharpened.

“You know it isn’t.””

“What did she take?””

Victoria looked at me.

“The company.””

I frowned.

“What company?””

“The company your family built.””

Rebecca shook her head.

“Your claim is inaccurate.””

Victoria smiled.

“Is it?””

She reached into her bag.

Then pulled out a document.

“Ask Claire what she knows about her inheritance.””

I looked at Rebecca.

She looked uncomfortable.

That worried me.

“What inheritance?””

Nobody answered.

I felt my chest tighten.

Victoria laughed.

“They never told you.””

My father looked away.

My anger rose.

“Tell me.””

My father closed his eyes.

“Claire…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I’m done being protected.””

The room became silent.

Finally, Rebecca spoke.

“Your grandmother inherited controlling ownership of Morgan Industries.””

I blinked.

“What?””

My entire life, I thought my grandmother was simply wealthy.

I thought the trust was about investments.

“You mean a company?””

Rebecca nodded.

“Yes.””

Victoria stepped forward.

“A company that was supposed to belong to my family.””

My father’s voice hardened.

“Your father tried to take it illegally.””

Victoria’s expression changed.

“My father built half of it.””

“And destroyed the other half.””

The anger between them was old.

Deep.

Personal.

I looked at Ethan.

And suddenly something clicked.

“Is that why you married me?””

His face changed.

“Claire…”

“Answer me.””

He looked down.

That was enough.

Victoria smiled sadly.

“You really didn’t know.””

I felt sick.

“How long?””

Ethan whispered,

“Since before we got married.””

The room spun.

Three words.

That was all it took.

Before we got married.

My father looked devastated.

“I warned your grandmother.””

“And she still let me marry him?””

My father didn’t answer.

Because she did.

I stepped back.

Everyone had failed me in different ways.

My grandmother.

My father.

My mother.

Ethan.

I looked at him.

“You knew who I was.””

“Yes.””

“You knew about the company.””

“Yes.””

“You knew about the trust.””

“Yes.””

My voice became quiet.

“Did you ever love me?””

The question hurt more than anything else.

Ethan opened his mouth.

But no words came.

Victoria watched silently.

And somehow, that silence was worse.

Then Ethan finally spoke.

“At first…”

I looked away.

Because I already knew the rest.

Rebecca interrupted.

“Claire.””

I turned.

She was looking at the document Victoria had brought.

Her expression was shocked.

“What?””

Rebecca pointed at the signature.

“This document…”

She picked it up.

“This isn’t a claim.””

Victoria smiled.

“No.””

“Then what is it?””

Victoria looked at me.

“It’s proof.””

“Proof of what?””

She stepped closer.

“Proof that your grandmother knew the truth about my father.””

My stomach tightened.

“What truth?””

Victoria’s smile disappeared.

“Your grandmother didn’t steal from my family.””

She looked at my father.

“She saved your company from someone much worse.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

Victoria slowly turned toward Ethan.

And every person in the room became still.

“The man who destroyed both our families.””

Ethan’s face went white.

“Don’t.””

Victoria ignored him.

“The man who has been hiding behind everyone else for years.””

I looked at Ethan.

Then at Victoria.

“Who?””

Victoria whispered the name.

May you like

And my entire world collapsed.

“Your husband’s father.””
