Chapter 9: The Nurse Who Kept Her Promise
I stood frozen in the kitchen.
Margaret Ellis descended the staircase slowly.
She was older than I remembered. Her once-dark hair had turned almost entirely gray, and her hands trembled as she held the railing.
"What are you doing in my house?"" I asked.
She looked at the photograph in my hand.
"I know I shouldn't have come here.""
"How did you get inside?""
"Your back door wasn't locked.""
I immediately stepped away from her.
"Don't come any closer.""
Margaret stopped.
"I'm not here to hurt you, Olivia.""
"Then start explaining.""
She looked toward the windows.
"Is anyone else here?""
"Answer my question.""
Margaret swallowed.
"Your father asked me to protect you.""
I stared at her.
"From whom?""
She lowered her eyes.
"From your uncle Thomas. And from your brother.""
The words felt like a physical blow.
I reached for my phone.
"Detective Hill is on his way.""
Margaret nodded.
"Good. Perhaps it's finally time.""
She sat on the edge of a dining chair without being invited.
"I've carried this secret for eleven years. I can't carry it anymore.""
"Then tell me.""
Margaret opened her handbag and removed a small brown envelope.
"Your father was conscious when I left his room that night.""
My throat tightened.
"What?""
"The hospital records say he was unconscious. But he spoke to me. He knew I was there.""
I shook my head.
"That's impossible. Nathan told me Dad hadn't spoken to anyone.""
Margaret looked at me.
"Nathan was lying.""
She placed the envelope on the table.
"Your father gave me this shortly before the medication was administered.""
Inside was a small key and a folded piece of paper.
I recognized my father's handwriting immediately.
Margaret, if anything happens to me, give this key to Olivia. Not Nathan. Not James. Only Olivia.
I looked up.
"What's the key for?""
Margaret hesitated.
"The private room beneath your father's old office.""
I frowned.
"His old office was sold.""
"Not the building. The basement archive. Your father had a private storage room that wasn't included in the sale.""
I remembered visiting that building as a child.
My father used to take me there on Saturdays. He'd let me sit in his office while he reviewed documents.
I had never known there was another room beneath it.
"Why didn't you give this to me eleven years ago?""
Margaret's eyes filled.
"Because Thomas threatened my family.""
She wiped her cheek.
"He told me that if I ever spoke about what happened, my husband would lose his job and my son would be arrested for a crime he didn't commit.""
I stared at her.
"What happened to your husband?""
"He died three years ago.""
"I'm sorry.""
She nodded.
"After he died, I decided I couldn't keep protecting people who had destroyed your family.""
A siren sounded in the distance.
Detective Hill was approaching.
I sat across from Margaret.
"Tell me about that night.""
She took a deep breath.
"Your father had been arguing with Thomas for several days. He believed money was being stolen from the family trust. He wanted to confront him, but Thomas insisted they could settle everything privately.""
"And Nathan?""
Margaret looked down.
"Nathan was there when Thomas arrived. He was angry with your father.""
"Why?""
"Your father had refused to give him money.""
I remembered Nathan's financial problems.
But I hadn't known the extent of them.
Margaret continued.
"He owed a lot of money. Your father offered to help him, but only if he stopped working with Thomas.""
I stared at her.
"What did Nathan do?""
"He shouted that your father had no right to control his life.""
My chest tightened.
"And then?""
Margaret clasped her hands.
"Thomas left. Nathan stayed. A few hours later, Dr. Mercer arrived.""
The same doctor.
"Did he administer the medication?""
Margaret nodded.
"I saw him prepare it. I questioned the dosage because it wasn't listed in the original care instructions.""
"What did he say?""
"He told me it was a new order.""
"Did you verify it?""
"No.""
Her voice broke.
"I should have.""
I looked at her.
"Did my father die because of that medication?""
Margaret shook her head.
"I don't know. I only know that his condition changed shortly afterward. And before he lost consciousness, he asked me to find you.""
I felt tears sliding down my face.
"What did he say?""
Margaret looked directly at me.
"He said, 'Tell Olivia I didn't give Thomas permission.''"
I covered my mouth.
"Permission for what?""
"That's what I've never understood.""
She pushed the key toward me.
"But I think you'll find the answer in the archive.""
The front door opened.
Detective Hill entered with two officers.
"Olivia, are you safe?""
I nodded.
He looked at Margaret.
"Ms. Ellis?""
She raised both hands.
"I came voluntarily.""
Detective Hill asked an officer to remain with her while he examined the envelope.
He looked at the key.
"Where did you say this archive was?""
Margaret gave him the address.
The detective's expression changed.
"That's the same building where the suspicious holding company was registered.""
James, who had arrived moments earlier, looked up sharply.
"What?""
Margaret nodded.
"Your father's old office.""
I turned toward her.
"Are you saying Daniel's company is connected to that building?""
She hesitated.
Then she reached into her handbag again and produced a second photograph.
This one showed Daniel, Thomas, Nathan, and Dr. Mercer standing together outside the building.
The date was eleven years earlier.
Two weeks before my father died.
I stared at Daniel's face.
He looked younger.
But the expression was unmistakable.
He was smiling.
I turned to James.
"Daniel knew my father before he died?""
James nodded slowly.
"Apparently.""
My stomach twisted.
"How?""
Margaret answered before James could.
"Because Daniel wasn't introduced to your father through you, Olivia.""
I looked at her.
"What do you mean?""
She leaned forward.
"Your father had already been investigating Daniel's business dealings months before your wedding.""
I couldn't breathe.
Margaret's voice dropped to a whisper.
"Your father knew something about Daniel that he never told you.""
Then she pointed at the photograph.
"Look at the man standing behind him.""
I leaned closer.
At first, I didn't understand.
Then I recognized the face.
It was my father.
But he wasn't smiling.
He was holding a document and looking directly at Daniel.
On the back of the photograph was a handwritten sentence.
The marriage was never the beginning of the plan.
I looked at James.
He was staring at the photograph in disbelief.
And then Detective Hill's phone rang.
He listened for several seconds before turning toward us.
"Mrs. Bennett, we've just located your brother.""
I stood.
"Where?""
"At the old office building.""
My heart began pounding.
The detective paused.
"He's not alone. Thomas Whitmore is with him.""
Then he delivered the final piece of information.
May you like
"According to building security, they've just opened your father's private archive.""
And whatever was inside that room, Nathan and Thomas had apparently been desperate to reach it before I did.
